Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Colin and Laura (MacIntyre) MacPhail. Lolly grew up in South Bar as the only daughter in a family of eight. Lolly’s mother passed when she was just a little girl. Lolly loved her father and her brothers dearly. Following her graduation from Sydney Academy she worked at Alteen’s Jewellers in Sydney before moving to Ontario. She was a member of Trinity United Church in Whitney Pier and Bridgewater United Church. Lolly is survived by her loving husband, Gerry; son, Grant, Belleville, Ont.; daughters, Melanie (Irene), Blandford, N.S., Janice, Edmonton, Alta. and Valerie, USA; brothers, Stan (Jennie), Sydney, N.S. and Walter (Marcella) Sydney River, N.S., numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Grant Jr., Jennifer, Steven, Scot and Jacqueline and her four great-grandchildren, Scarlett, Atticus, Emil and Ivy. She is also survived by her four stepdaughters, Susan, Heather and Nancy of Edmonton and Linda in Calgary and their families. Besides her parents, Lolly was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Robert, Dempsey, Sidney 'Brud', and Lloyd. Lola’s family is grateful that her wish to remain at home was made possible by loving family members, palliative care, Dr. T. Riding, VON, and the Lunenburg Home Support Co. Services. James Davis 'Sonny' MacQueen Born In: Sydney Mines Born: June 11th, 1952 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 24th, 2016 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother James Davis 'Sonny' MacQueen, 63, on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney Mines on June 11, 1952, Sonny was the son of the late James and Regis (Campbell) MacQueen. Sonny had a great love for people, and over the years he helped hundreds to gain employment in Alberta. As many can attest to, he had the biggest heart, and his doors were always open to all who showed up to stay awhile, until they could find a job. He would turn none away. Sonny is survived by his daughter, Kaleigh; her mother, Gerry Butts and grandchildren, Connor and Brayden; brothers, Wayne (Elaine), North Sydney and Lorne, Sydney Mines; sisters, Donna (John) Arsenault, Sydney Mines, Lois McDonald, North Sydney, and Jackie, Ontario. Also left to mourn are his many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and many friends. Besides his parents, Sonny was predeceased by his brothers, Donnie, Ricky and Ronnie, a sister in infancy, and his nephew, Wayne Arsenault. Nelson Norman McKay Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 26th, 2016 We, the family of Nelson Norman McKay, age 80, regret to announce his passing on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Sidney and Elizabeth (McIntyre) McKay. Nelson is survived by his daughters, Marie (Winston McFarlane) McKay, Sydney, Marion McKay, Ont. and Colleen (Roger Gole) McKay, Sydney Mines; sons, John (Suzanne) and Tyson (Corey), Ont., Earl (Tracey), Sydney and Jamie (Amanda) Smith, Regina, Sask.; sisters, Barbara Campbell, Halifax, Beverly Kimber and Glenda (Donald) Howe, Dartmouth; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Daniel Angus 'Dan' MacArthur Born In: Cordroy Valley Newfoundland Born: February 22nd, 1936 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: February 23rd, 2016 On Feb. 23, 2016, Daniel Angus MacArthur, 80, passed away peacefully at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in the Codroy Valley, N.L. on Feb. 22, 1936, he was the son of the late Allan and Mary (MacDonald) MacArthur. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth (MacNeil); his brother, Martin (Rhoda), Valleyview, Alta.; his sister, Margaret Cormier, Codroy Valley, N.L.; his sister-in-law, Marie MacArthur, Codroy Valley, N.L. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were so special to him. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Gordon, John, George, Sears, Frank, Jim and Louis, sister, Loretta, his in-laws, Jim and Esther MacNeil and also by his good friend and brother-in-law, Leo Cormier, Codroy Valley, N.L. Dan was a proud member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years. He served with the 1st and 2nd Battalion of the Canadian Guards and with the 3RCR. He was a member of the first peacekeeping force sent to Cyprus. Until recently, he faithfully attended the yearly reunions of the Atlantic Branch of the Canadian Guards. Upon retirement from the forces, Dan worked as a Commissionaire at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Being so proud of his Scottish heritage, Dan and his wife, Elizabeth, travelled to many concerts and music sessions featuring Cape Breton fiddle music. Part of each summer was spent at the Lighthouse Cottages in Port Hood enjoying the scenery and the beach. Numerous week-ends were spent in Mabou. Many valued friendships were formed in both places. Dan had a great interest in politics and regularly watched the Parliamentary Channel. He enjoyed reading books about the history of the Atlantic Provinces and anything about Newfoundland. He played golf and followed both golf and curling on television. In his early Army days, he was a long distance runner. Dan faced his health issues with courage, dignity and determination. While quiet and unassuming, he had a wonderful sense of humour. He was a loving husband, brother and uncle and will be dearly missed by his family and close friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m., all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Deacon Leo Penny will officiate the funeral service. Interment to follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. The reception will be held at St. Leonard Hall.
