Born in Sydney, he was the son of Michael and Gladys Mullowney. He excelled in minor sports and played senior hockey for the Sydney Millionaires and Glace Bay Miners. He remained involved in minor sports coaching at all levels, including the Sydney Junior Millionaires. John retired as Deputy Chief of the Sydney Police Department in 1994 after 40 years of service and support to his community. He was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who cared deeply for his family. He was a talented carpenter, always ready to help family and friends. John enjoyed family life, travel, dogs, camping in Ingonish; tarabish, cribbage, and sharing stories with friends. Survived by his wife, Florence (MacLeod); his sister, Margaret (Ken) Robertson, Alberta; sons, Ronald, Botwood, John (Patricia), Cole Harbour, Michael (Darlene), St. John’s and daughter, Deborah Annesty (Brent), Cole Harbour; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Shelia. Family burial service will be held in Sydney at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice. Naphie Ann Tomie Born In: Sydney Passed on: February 21st, 2016 Naphie Ann Tomie passed away on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016 in the presence of her loving family at the age of 90. Born in Sydney, she was the youngest daughter of the late Leo and Jane (Assaff) Abbass. She was predeceased by brothers, Tom and John L.; sister, Genevieve Abbass and grandson, Neal Tomie. She was married for 68 year to the love of her life, George Tomie and the proud mother of George Leo (Debbie), Brian (Susan) and Donna Tomie. She adored her grandchildren, Darrell (Nicole), Ellen, Brynn, Bruce, Courtney and Chandler and great-granddaughters, Samantha and Charley Tomie. Naphie was the heart of her family and a woman of tremendous kindness and generosity. To know her was to love her. She loved to knit socks and dishcloths for her family and friends. She would pass many hours doing crosswords and got her eldest granddaughter doing them with her, it helped to keep her mind sharp even in the face of Dementia. She lived her life with passion and fought valiantly through tough times, always with a sense of humour. She was a devout Catholic, a longtime member of the CWL and a member of the Daughters of Mary of the St. Joseph’s Lebanese and Syrian Benevolent Society. Visitation will held at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys on Thursday, Feb. 25th at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in Naphie’s memory be made to Hospice Palliative Care, Cape Breton. Beloved husband of Ann. Cherished father of Darlene and Jacob Jamin & Denise and Ken Green & Patricia Wilson. Loving Poppy to his seven special angels. Dear brother of Audrey, William, Mary, Albert, Leonard and the late Naomi and the late baby George Ernest. He lived his life one day at a time and mentored others to do the same. John 'Richard' Neil John Richard Neil, age 70, passed away after a battle with cancer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Isabel (MacNeil) Neil. Richard was a member of the former St. John’s Parish and more recently St. Anne’s Parish. Richard worked for Devco for 32 years; he had a great sense of humour and could be a prankster at times. His most cherished times were spent surrounded by his grandchildren. Richard liked the outdoors, enjoyed camping, and on warm summer nights, he could be found in the backyard surrounded by family and friends by a bonfire. He leaves behind his wife, the love of his life of almost 50 years, Sheila Neil (nee Morrison); daughter, Lisa (Brad); sons, John (Sandra), Blaise (Angie), eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; sisters, Jean McPhee and Lois (Wayne) Steele; nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents Belle and John, Richard was also predeceased by his brother, David. In honouring Richard’s wishes cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016 from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. followed by a reception, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Memorial donations in Richard’s memory may be made to palliative care. Josephine Aubry Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 14th, 2016 We regret to announce the peaceful death of Josephine (King) Aubry, 82, on Feb. 14, 2016 at Celtic Court, Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines, Josephine was a daughter of the Late Annie (Bragg) Riddle and Chesley King. Josephine lived and worked in Los Angeles for 40 years, returning home to Cape Breton to retire in 1991. She was a survivor, having battled breast cancer twice. Josephine is survived by her daughter, Marie MacLeod; granddaughter, Crystal Melvin; sisters, Peg Fiefield, Sackville, N.S., Margaret (Don) Young, Sydney Mines, Elizabeth Weaver, Dartmouth, Phyllis Hillier, Sydney Mines, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Percy, Harry, Chesley, Ernie, Charles and two brothers in infancy, as well as friend and companion, Merv Stagg. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 23, 2016 at the John J. Nugent Firemen’s Center, 1 Elliott St., Sydney Mines with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Sydney Mines Food Bank, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
