Born: July 29th, 1925 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 15th, 2016 It is with profound sadness, we the family announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law and friend to many, Eileen Grantmyre Penny, age 90, on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at her home. Born in Malden, Mass. on July 29, 1925, Eileen was the daughter of the late William 'Tex' and Margaret (Grantmyre) Guy. In her younger years Eileen was an avid bowler and skater. She was a faithful and devoted member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney and was actively involved in several committees within the parish. She was a longtime member of the senior choir, organizer for the funeral choir, a Lector and chairperson for the Liturgy Committee for many years. She was involved with the Catholic Women’s League and an Associate of the Sisters of Charity. She also volunteered with Palliative Care at the Northside General Hospital. Eileen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her only son, Wayne and daughter-in-law, Cathie Penny, Sydney and her four grandchildren, Laura (Christian), Jonathan (Darlene), Mark and Hannah; three great-grandchildren, Allie, Kate and Devon; sister-in-law, Alice Guy and a number of nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Penny and an infant daughter, Geralyn; her brother, William 'Tex' Guy Jr. and her sister, Marie Reashore. Visitation for Eileen will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date. Margaret Rose Joe Born In: Wagmatcook Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 15th, 2016 It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret Rose Joe, at the age of 65. Margaret Rose passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Wagmatcook, the daughter of the late Levi and Madeline (Cabot) Googoo. Margaret Rose was a teacher’s aide at the Eskasoni Elementary Middle School and a foster parent for many for Mi’kmaw Family Children's Services. She was devoted to St. Anne’s Mission at Quebec and Chapel Island. Margaret enjoyed watching her cooking shows, knitting and travelling with her sister, Mary Anne. She is survived by her seven children, Margaret Rose (Gary), Stephen (Annette), Tena (Philip), Joe (Lillian), Charlotte (Donald), Nancy (Kenny) and Flora; her only surviving sister, Mary Anne Googoo; godchildren, Miranda Joe, Angela Peck, Shaun Paul, Martha Lewis, Nadine Bernard, Vanessa Cabot, Lance Lewis, Ida Denny, 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Joe; siblings, Stephen Levi Googoo, Charlie Peter Googoo, Annie Jane (Googoo) Lewis; niece, Cheryl Cynthia Pierro and godchild, Douglas Stevens. Visitation for Mrs. Joe will begin after 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 at the family residence, 4723 Shore Rd., Eskasoni. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 21 at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Patrick Alexander Jessome Born In: Sydney Mines Born: September 3rd, 1977 Passed in: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Passed on: March 13th, 2016 On Sunday, the thirteenth day of March in the year 2016, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, welcomed back to the kingdom of Heaven, Patrick Alexander Jessome. Born in Sydney Mine, N.S., Patrick was the son of Pat (Gerry) Jessome and Jo-Ann (Stewart) MacLeod, born Sept. 3, 1977. After an 18 year residency of Florence, N.S., Patrick ventured west where he settled and raised a family in Edmonton, Alta. Patrick was a skilled carpenter and tradesman, like his father, and took on jobs with Igloo Building Supplies, Alta Fab and was an eight year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local Union 1325. Patrick spent his summer evenings doing what he loved, playing softball with the Sturgeon Valley Sluggers. He is survived by his fiancé, Hollie and his wonderful children, Ty, Stori and Tanner; brother, Jason (Sheri) and stepsiblings, Nichole (Cory), Jaime (John), Terri (Johnny), Wes (Karen), Stewart (Andree), Crystal (Matthew) and Shelise; father-in-law, Bruce Stanley and brother-in-law, Bob. He is also survived by his grandparents, Alex and Selena Lovell and Donnie Jessome, and many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, who love him dearly. He was predeceased by his grandmother, Theresa Jessome, and mother-in-law, Diane Stanley. Visitation for Patrick Alexander Jessome will be held at Westlawn Funeral Home, 16310 Stony Plain Rd., Edmonton, Alta. on Thursday, March 17, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. A Celebration of Patrick’s Life will be held on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions for Patrick’s children would be greatly appreciated. A Celebration of Life ceremony will take place in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia at a date to be announced. “The family ring may be broken, but will never be forgotten.” Elizabeth Emily (Evans) MacLeod, RN Born In: Newfoundland Passed in: Eastern Passage Passed on: March 16th, 2016 Elizabeth MacLeod, age 71, passed away peacefully with family by her side March 16, 2016, in Ocean View Continuing Care Centre in Eastern Passage. Born in Newfoundland and resided in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Dorcus Evans. Mother of Paul (Christine), Gordon and Nancy. Elizabeth will be remembered by her grandchildren Sydney and Calista. She is survived by beloved sister, Lorraine (Lloyd) Hunt. She was predeceased by brother, Terry Evans. Elizabeth was well known for her spirited personality and her love of highland dancing. Special thanks to the staff at Ocean View Continuing Care Centre for their compassionate and gentle care of Elizabeth in her final years. A family celebration of her life will take place at a later date. She will be dearly missed. Wayne Louis Bennett Passed in: Whitney Pier Passed on: March 15th, 2016 Wayne Louis Bennett, 53, of Taylor Street, Whitney Pier, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was a son of Allan and the late Anna (Mombourquette) Bennett. Wayne worked on and off as a truck driver out West. He is survived by his partner and love of his life, Susan Grant; brother, Allan (Susan), Sydney; nieces, Marilyn, Linda, Carol, Barbara and Talya; nephew, Mark; grandnephew, Cameron; very good friend, Stephen Anderson; and his dog, Eddie. Let us always remember him for his loving, smiling face and kind words he had for everyone. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Saturday 10 a.m., with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery followed by a reception at East Bay Legion. Memorials may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund.
