Rita (Deveaux) Connors Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: February 19th, 2016 It is with mixed emotions that we announce the recent passing of our dearly loved mother, Rita (Deveaux) Connors at Maple Hill Manor, a place she happily referred to as “the best place I ever lived”! Although she died on Feb. 19, 2016, she was actually taken from us gradually over the past six years by the monster called Alzheimer's disease. Although we are distraught to lose that final contact with her, because there were still so many funny and endearing moments that we had together, we are grateful for the fact that her difficult journey is ended and she is at peace. Mom was born in New Waterford almost 92 years ago, to the late Telesphore and Eliza (Aucoin) Deveaux. French was her first language, and she spoke it fluently for many years. She attended Mount Carmel School, and then graduated from Mount St. Vincent University in 1942. She worked at the War Office in Halifax until her marriage, after which she moved back home. Over the years she worked teaching typing and shorthand in night school, then as a secretary at BEC, and finally as a medical secretary, first for Dr. Steven Wolfe and then for Dr. Peter Littlejohn for many years. She was very active in the NW Figure Skating Club, the Mount Carmel Joy Program, and served for 25 years on the Maple Hill Manor Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to play cards, and was quite adept at 45s. Besides her parents and her husband Russell, she was predeceased by a son Kenneth in infancy, her beloved only sibling, Eugene 'Jeep' Deveaux and a much loved son-in-law, Leroy McKinnon. She is survived by her children, Patsy (John) Bates of Mira; Maureen (late Leroy) McKinnon of Midland, Ontario; Joanne (Jerry) MacDonald of New Waterford; Deborah (Jerry McCrank) Connors of Ottawa, Ontario; Russ (Nancy) Connors of Renfrew, Ontario; Rick (JoAnne) Connors of Rawlins, Wyoming; and Lisa (Ken) Hanson of Prince Albert, Sask. She is also survived by grandchildren, Valerie (Cameron) Long, Clay (Karrie) and Melanie (Marc Doucette) Bates; Amy Kent, Jill and Kate McKinnon; Laurie (Joe) MacCormick and Mark MacDonald; Graham (Julie), Adam, Peter, Ian, Brendan, Renee, Alanna, Angus Connors, Anne and Kent Hanson. She was a proud great-grandmother to Hunter, Jaxson, and Cooper Long; Lars and Celia MacDonald; Sean MacCormick; Riley and Piper Gagnon; Oliver and Hudson Kent; Amelie and Kian Bates; Cole Doucette; and Liam Connors. Mom is also survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley Deveaux of Eastern Passage, N.S., and by Brenda Chiasson and Vernon Chisholm, who grew up like our brother and sister and always remained in close contact with Mom. She will be sorely missed by a wide circle of friends – how she treasured her time with them! She will be missed as well by her cousins in Cheticamp, and by her nieces and nephews in the Connors and Deveaux families, especially Cheryl Deveaux McDaniel, who spent many childhood summers with us. Also by a special 'daughter', Carol Ann Sheppard – they always made each other laugh! Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 25 from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. There will be a funeral mass at St. Leonard's Church on Friday, Feb. 26 at 10 am, followed by a reception at the parish hall on Convent Street. Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation to follow. Mom's kindness and generosity to others were legendary; please honour her memory by performing an act of kindness to someone in need. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca <http://www.vjmcgillivray.ca/>.
