Hamm Born In: North River, Canada Passed in: Sydney, Canada Passed on: February 26th, 2016 Beloved father, husband and friend Carl Hubert MacDonald Hamm passed away from complications due to Parkinsons on Feb. 26, 2016 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on the Murray Road in North River, Victoria Co. he was the steadfast, diligent and unswerving foundation of our family home here in Baddeck. An accountant by trade, Dad was hired to keep the books at Stone's Drug Store a few weeks after it's doors opened, holding the position until his retirement after 43 years of dedicated service. Donnell Beaton, former proprietor of Stone's and family friend shared some memories of dad: "Carl did so many things to improve the business of the Drug Store and he went upon this work with diligence and honesty and integrity as becoming an honest upright man. Never one to raise his voice he had a manner to his demeanor that instilled confidence in everyone who was witness to his comments. He was mild mannered, respected by all and I’m sure that he never had an enemy or confrontation with anyone. His music was another passion as I witnessed over the years conversations with many of his fiddling friends, people like Byron MacPhee, Joey Beaton, Winston Scotty Fitzgerald, Maynard MacKenzie, Bussy MacLeod, Charlie MacCuspic, and many more." Dad's true calling was music, and in that aspect of his life he excelled with the same diligence that he applied to his work and family. In the 50s and 60s he played halls and houses all over Cape Breton Island, by himself and with TheTuneweavers. A Charter Member of the Cape Breton Fiddler's Association in 1973, he played at the first Glendale Festival that year and continued to play with the association until he retired his fiddle due to Parkinsons whereupon he would sit with his music books and read music and play tunes in his head as he went. His encyclopedic memory of Scottish music and local history will be sorely missed. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lodge #35 Baddeck for over 55 years as well as past treasurer of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society. Son of the late George and Margaret Hamm (MacDonald), he was predeceased by wife, Jacqueline (Kerr) and brothers-in-law, Roy Kerr and Pat Ryan. Survived by loving son and daughter, Donald Hamm (Megan) and Elaine Fuller (Reg); sister, Donna Ryan and the grandchildren he loved and thought about so much, Isabelle Hamm and Bhreagh and Kylea Fuller. The family would like to thank the staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital as well as the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their dedicated service to both of our parents in their times of need. We are truly grateful for all the work that you do. Special thanks as well to the wonderful staff of the palliative care unit at the CB Regional Hospital in Sydney. Cremation has taken place. Ceilidh for both mom and dad, service and burial will be held at a later date.
