Shirley was the daughter of the late Capt. Raymond and Mary Jane Oxford, and was born and raised in North Sydney, Cape Breton. She was employed for a time with the Northside Tribune writing such columns as “Sam’s Sidelines,” “Music Talks” and “Let’s Talk Boxing” and also wrote and published a book of spiritual poems titled “You’re Never Alone” dedicated to her late husband Paul. She was a volunteer with the Helpline, the Community Police Office in Whitney Pier and the Serendipity Society. She was a lifetime member of the Irish Benevolent Society and president of the ladies auxiliary and member of the dart league. While living in Westmount she wrote a small community newspaper and was owner/operator of Ra-Mar booking agency. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Heather, and sons, Michael and John; her siblings, Daisy and Theresa. She was also predeceased by her first husband, John ‘Jack’ Leach, and her second husband, Prof. Paul Tremblay. She is survived by her siblings, Marie, Raymond, Melvin and Dorothy and her children, Gerard, Richard, James, Ronnie, Elaine, Michelle, Theresa, Rhonda and Rachel. Also, by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most importantly, her cherished granddaughter, Misha, who helped make her remaining years easier. Cremation has taken place and ashes will be scattered over chosen places on Cape Breton Island. Katherine Albertice “Kay” Maroun New Waterford It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of my Mom, Katherine ‘Kay’ Maroun, 95. Katherine peacefully passed away in her sleep after a long battle with vascular disease on May 10, 2016, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney. Born in New Waterford on Christmas Eve, 1920, Katherine (nee Muir) was the daughter of the late Hugh and Georgina (McEachern) Muir. Katherine lived in Montreal for 45 years before moving back to New Waterford. She and her late husband Joseph Maroun loved to go out dancing with each other. She loved reading books and knitting. She was also very religious and loved to cook Lebanese food. Katherine will be sadly missed by her daughter, Lorna (Dave) Feeney, New Brunswick; stepson, Gregg Maroun, New Brunswick; brother, Hugh Jr., Bras d’Or, and her sister, Gladys, Toronto; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Joseph, she was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Chapel; stepson, David Maroun; brother, Robert; sisters, Josephine and Muriel. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be celebrated at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 10 a.m., with Fr. Albert Maroun officiating. A luncheon will follow at St. Leonard’s parish hall on Convent Street, New Waterford. A private burial will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford. Christina M. “Christy” Sherwood Marion Bridge We, the family of Christy M. Sherwood, regret to announce her passing on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. Born May 24, 1927, at Canoe Lake, she was the daughter of the late David and Sarah Ann (MacIntyre) Lynk. Christy is survived by her daughters, Frances Hanson, Calgary, Georgina (Ken) Sherwood-Loften, Calgary, Brenda Sherwood, Grande Prairie and Sally (Billy) MacCormick, Marion Bridge; sons, David MacSween, Edmonton, Phillip, Gordon (Emma) and Kenny (Carol McCaw), Gabarus and Jimmy (Paula), Grand Prairie ;17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mildred MacIntyre. Also fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, and several sons and daughters-in-law. She was predeceased by her husband, George; sister, Margaret ‘Peggy’; brothers, Alex, Dan, Rory, Duncan, John A. and Angus; three grandchildren. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, May 12, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Zion Wesley United Church on Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery, Gabarus. Memorials may be made to charity of choice. Pearl (MacLean) Gullage North Sydney/Coxheath It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Agnes Pearl (MacLean) Gullage, on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Pearl was born Oct. 17, 1921, in Safe Harbour, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Annie (Elkins) White. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church, active as a teacher at the church school, enjoyed teaching children to read, baking, knitting and crocheting. For many years she worked at Wong’s Café, where she made lasting friendships. Pearl was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Pearl is survived by her two children, her son, Ben (Andrea) MacLean, Coxheath, and her daughter, Irene (Robert) Bartlett, Leitches Creek; her six grandchildren, Leanna (Chris) McNeil, Liverpool, Beth MacLean, Halifax, Russell Peter MacLean, Sydney, Bruce Bartlett, Anita Bartlett, both in Calgary and Heather Bartlett, Sydney Mines; her seven great-grandchildren, Chandra, Bishop, Alex, Greg, Robert, Kaitlynn and Luke; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Stanley LeDrew; her second husband, Russell MacLean and her third husband, Kie Gullage; her grandson, Stewart Bartlett; her siblings, Emmanual, Gladys, Olive and Edwin. Visitation for Pearl will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jason Homan officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
