Raised in Glace Bay, she was the youngest child of the late Sarah (O’Donnell) and Charles Sampson. Betty is survived by her children, Sandra (Jim) and Ron (Liz), Toronto; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Earl and Clarence (Irene) and her sisters, Rose, Ruby and Sally; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Sampson. Winston 'Windy' MacDonald Born In: Whitney Pier Passed on: May 26th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad and papa, Winston ‘Windy’ MacDonald, 74, of East Broadway, Whitney Pier on Thursday, May 26, 2016. Born in Whitney Pier, he was a son of the late Frank and Christena (Patterson) MacDonald. In his younger years, Windy worked as a labourer at Miller & Huges and then as an auto body technician. Always a motor vehicle enthusiast, he was always looking for and would never pass up a good deal at auctions or wherever one may arise. He is survived by his son, Winston Jr. (Natalie), Sydney; grandchildren, CJ (Jules), Mikayla, Brittney and Madison; great-grandchildren, Willow Rose and Emerson Winston; longtime companion, Sharon V. MacDonald, as well as her family, Kevin (Janet), Kenny (Debbie), Keith (Shauna) and grandchildren, Kelly, Reanna, Kenzie, Kyler and Gracie. He will be missed by his furry best friend and companion, Sheba. Windy was predeceased by his wife, Edith Ann (MacCormick) MacDonald; son, Trevor G. MacDonald and brothers, Cyril, Neillie and Frank. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday 11 a.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. My Dad” Freeman Thomas Whitty Born In: Ingonish Beach Cape Breton Passed on: May 23rd, 2016 Freeman Thomas Whitty died peacefully in his sleep at home on Monday, May 23, 2016 in his 81st year. Beloved husband of Flora Anne (Donovan) Whitty, and cherished father of Daryl (Diane), Dana (Liz), Brendan (Sandra), Jeannine Fraser (Mark) and Liam. Loving Grampa of Sarah, Owen, Noah, Charlotte, Rachel, Mae and Xavier. The eldest of 12 children, he is survived by brothers Doug (Judy), Maurice (Violet), Bert (Sandra deceased), Joe (Edie), and sisters Cathy (Basil) Favaro, Lillian (Glen) Pepperdine. He was predeceased by his brothers Dennis (Ivetta), Barry; sisters, Agnes (Tom) Donovan, Theresa in infancy and brother, Everett in infancy. Freeman is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Born in Ingonish Beach, Cape Breton, son of the late George and Gertrude (Hines) Whitty, he graduated summa cum laude from St. Francis Xavier University with B.A., B. Ed., and M. Ed. Degrees. His passion for teaching is evidenced by the countless accolades received over his 40 plus years of service. His devotion to AA and eloquence as a speaker proved an inspiration to many others. He was an avid golfer, and his wizardry with stained glass has added beauty to many homes. Erwin Epstein Born In: Sydney Passed in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Passed on: May 26th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Erwin Epstein, who died peacefully at home on Thursday, May 26, 2016 on the day of his 63rd wedding anniversary. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sylvia; children, Sandra and Michael (Catherine) and five grandchildren, (-Neesa, Geoffrey, David, Alexander and Johanna.Further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives, he will be fondly missed. Born and raised in Sydney, N.S., Erwin was a successful businessman and a well-known, respected member of the community. Although he was always a Cape Bretoner at heart, Sylvia and Erwin moved to Toronto in 1994 where they enjoyed many happy years of retirement, travelling between Florida, Vancouver and the Maritimes. Erwin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend with such a strong spirit and zest for life. His gregarious, uplifting and positive outlook stayed with him until the end and will forever be an inspiration. Francis Mendel MacNeil Born In: Barrra Glen Cape Breton Passed in: Coldbrook Passed on: May 22nd, 2016 Mendel passed away quietly on May 22, 2016. He leaves behind his wife, Colleen Sylvia (George); his brothers, Rod C., Jamie and Joe; his sister, Marie (O’Brien); his sons, Stephen Francis, Daniel ‘Danny’ Robert and Gregory Brice and his grandson, David Michael. He was predeceased by his sisters, Annie (O’Toole), Monica, Theresa and Louise (Gillis) and his daughter, Debra Ann Mary. The son of the late John Dan and Annie Catherine MacNeil. Mendel was born in Barra Glen, Cape Breton. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1948 at Chatham, N.B .and worked in the ME Section. In Chatham, he met and married Colleen (George) of Canning, N.S. His career took him to Manitoba, Quebec, France, Alberta, Manitoba (again), Nova Scotia and finally back to New Brunswick. He retired from the Air Force in 1976 to his apple farm in Lawrencetown, N.S. He retired from farming in 1994 and settled in Coldbrook, N.S. Mendel will be remembered together with his daughter, Debbie, who passed away on March 7, 2016. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Kentville. Reception will follow. A private interment will be held at a later date. Alfred Thomas MacPherson Alfred Thomas MacPherson, Glace Bay, was given his wings on May 21, 2016 at the age of 81. Alfie was a dear and gentle father, brother, uncle and great uncle. He was the son of Marie (Ford) and Alfred MacPherson. Raised by dear and most wonderful grandparents, Catherine and James Ford. He is survived by sister, Alma (Ed) Buchanan and their family; brothers, Dennis MacPherson, Greg (Ada) MacPherson, David MacPherson and sister, Shelia Hopkins. His dear friend and companion for many years, Joan Morrison, formerly of Glace Bay. Also, his children who are in Toronto and whom he thought of every day. Predeceased by his parents, Marie and Alfred; brothers, Donnie, Jackie and sisters, Mary Poplawski and Helen MacCormick; stepmother, Ernesteen MacPherson, also Baby Marie, his dear little girl. Alfie resided in Toronto for many years and then back to Glace Bay and the last two years being spent at Harbourstone in Sydney, where he received wonderful care and love. Norris Dowe Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: May 25th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we, the family of Norris ‘Bud’ Dowe, announce his passing on May 25, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Norris was the son of the late Norris and Margaret (McIntyre) Dowe. Norris worked in his early years as a coal miner at #20 Colliery and later as an electrician. Norris was an avid gardener and grew many varieties of vegetables, strawberries and fruit trees. He also grew giant pumpkins, which he entered in the Millville Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off for many years. For numerous years he was a judge of vegetables and flowers at the Port Morien Fall Fair. He also enjoyed playing cards at the local card clubs and meeting new people. Norris was a longtime active member of St. John the Baptist Parish and later St. Anne Parish. Norris is survived by sisters, Doris (late Wayne Farrell), California, Audrey, Anne (Ray) Lawrence of Glace Bay; brothers, Lonnie (Yvonne), Nyanza, Don (Diane), Cheticamp, Kevin (Gina), Chapleau, Ont.; sister-in-law, Betty Dowe, Glace Bay. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Norris was predeceased by his brother, Jack and brother-in-law, Wayne Farrell. As per Bud’s wishes there will be no visitation. A funeral mass celebrating his life will take place at St. Anne Church, Monday, May 30th at 10 a.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice
