Berezuk Born In: Sydney Born: July 3rd, 1944 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: May 16th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing our husband, father, son, grandfather and brother, Daniel ‘Danny’ William Berezuk, age 71, on Monday May 16, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, after his courageous 22-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Danny was born July 3, 1944 in Sydney, he was the son of Catherine ‘Kay’ (Witka) Berezuk of Whitney Pier and of the late John Berezuk. He was employed as an insurance agent for 30 years with J.A. Young & Sons. Danny was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was very community minded, involved with the scouting movement for a number of years, working with the Beaver groups as a leader “Hawkeye” and served as the Assistant District Commissioner, he was also very involved and served as president of the Northside Figure Skating and Power Skating Club for a number of years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or. Besides his mother, Catherine, Danny is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Young) Berezuk; his daughter, Cheryl (Colin) MacKinnon, New Glasgow; son, Stephen (Karen) Berezuk, Pembroke, Ont.; grandchildren, Victoria & Olivia MacKinnon, Matthew, Morgan and Samantha Berezuk; sister, Diane ‘Cookie’ (Larry) Johnston, South Haven; brother, Roddy (Ann) Berezuk, Lawrencetown, N.S.; sister-in-law, Barbara Berezuk, British Columbia, also a number nieces and nephews. Danny was predeceased by his father, John Berezuk, and by a brother, John Berezuk. No visitation by Danny’s request. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter MacLeod officiating. Cremation will follow. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to a charity of ones choice. Anna May Walsh Passed in: Neil's Harbour Passed on: May 15th, 2016 It is with joyful tears and broken hearts, that we announce the reunion of our mother with our father on May 15, 2016. A mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Anna May Walsh passed away peacefully at Highland Manor, Neil's Harbour. She was the daughter of the late George Murray and Annie Kennena (MacDermid) MacLeod, Wreck Cove. As a young teenager, mom moved to Sydney with her family and it was there where she met and married our father. Mom was a member of First United Church, Sydney, and a member of the "Club Girls," which was a true friendship lasting over 50 years. She was the core of our family that kept everyone united and called to check in on a regular basis. Our mother, a compassionate, warm-spirited homemaker, always lent a helping hand to those in need. Whether offering a warm meal or a place to stay, the door was always open to friends and family. In her early years, during the day she also cared for 12 children whom she adored as if they were her own. She had an incredible smile and sense of humour. Her laughter was contagious. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie (George) Burton, Alberta; sons, George (Claudia) Walsh, Englishtown; Lawrence (Jean) Walsh, South Harbour; Kenneth Walsh, Sydney. Grandchildren, Shelley (Andy) Barter, Calgary; Scott (Jennifer) Walsh, Florida; Stephanie (Leo) Milley, Alberta; Jennifer (Tim), Sydney; Annie (Justin), Halifax; Kyle Walsh, Sydney. Great-grandchildren, Sarah, Faith and Grace, Leo and Alexis. Also she is survived by many nieces and nephews here in Cape Breton and British Columbia. Mom is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years, Reginald Walsh; sister, Ray Collier; and brother, Allister MacLeod. Many heartfelt thanks to Highland Manor and Buchanan Memorial Hospital staff for their care and compassion shown to our mother over the past four years. As mom always said “See you in the movies.” Lavinnia Madonna Britten Born In: Arichat Passed in: Evanston Passed on: May 15th, 2016 It is with saddened hearts that we have to announce the passing of Lavinnia Madonna Britten that occurred at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston on May 15, 2016, with her loving family by her side. Born in Arichat, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Delvina (Fougere) Theriault. Lavinnia was a member of the Evergreen Senior’s Club in Port Hawkesbury. She loved bowling, curling, gardening and flowers. She also loved visiting at the Port Hawkesbury Seniors Home and having a good conversation with her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Bowden, Vancouver, and Judy Britten (Alex Phillips), Edmonton, Alta.; sons, Blair (Nancy), Arichat and Peter at home in Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Dionne, Billy, Lisa and Alfred; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Eva, Jack, Dawson and Grant; brothers, Leon, Halifax, Paul (Ann) and Ralph (Geraldine), both of Arichat; sister, Priscilla, Dartmouth. Born in Dominion on Aug. 27, 1928, Sydney, he was an alumnus of St. Francis Xavier University and spent his career teaching in Sydney area schools, retiring from Sydney Academy. He was a lifelong tinkerer and was often found in his workshop sporting his trademark coveralls or bicycling around Sydney. He also loved to travel and his family grew accustomed to packing up the station wagon and travelling throughout Canada and the United States. He enjoyed quizzing his 25 grandchildren on obscure questions that were rarely answered correctly. Aubrey was a hardworking, proud family man and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Stella (McEachern); children, Brendon (Dawn), Calgary, Elizabeth (Gord) Goodwin, Calgary, Cynthia (Richard) Campbell, Calgary, Martha (Ken) MacRae, River Ryan, Lyndon (Nancy), Sydney Forks, Rosemary (Gary) East, Haverhill, Massachusetts and Alice (James) MacLellan, Sydney River; grandchildren, Kira (Jon) Simons, Jessica Farrell; Shona, Lyndon, Brett and Patrick Goodwin; John, Emily, Anna and Stephanie Campbell; Elizabeth, Eric (Barbara) and Alexandra MacRae; Mary Ann, Aubrey, Kate and Lilly Farrell; Isabelle, Ian and Iris East; Allistair, Beth, Owen, Caroline and Fiona MacLellan; great-grandchildren, Julia, Jack, Declan and Ava Simons; sisters, M. Roger Wendell Keith Hawco Passed in: Ajax, Ontario, Canada Passed on: April 27th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roger on April 27, 2016 at Rouge Valley Ajax Pickering Hospital. Roger was the youngest of eight children born to Inez and Elmo Hawco in Sydney, N.S. on May 7, 1951. Although his heart was always in Cape Breton, Roger spent the last few decades in Ontario to be near his children and his grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Lisa Ighedoise, Adam Hawco and April Hawco. He was a cherished grandfather to Keitara, Damien, Hayley and August. He leaves behind five siblings, Rose, Inez, Sandy, Elmo and Errol. Predeceased by his parents, Inez and Elmo; sister, Gloria and sister, Arlene. Roger was well known in the taxi industry, spending many years driving for City Wide Taxi in Oshawa. Cremation has taken place. Following a visitation on Sunday, May 1st, Roger began the trip home to Cape Breton, where he will be sprinkled in the ocean by his family.
