Johanna (Martell) McGillivary New Waterford It is with sadness we announce the passing of Johanna McGillivary at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, CCU with her family by her side on her 75th birthday, May 4, 2016. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Viola (McEachern) Martell. Johanna had a love of life, especially for her family. There is nothing she enjoyed more than sitting around the table with a cup of tea talking with family and friends having a card game, passing along the love of it to her kids and grandkids. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who would do anything for them if asked, from making pancakes at 7 p.m. or home fries at 3 a.m. She loved to cook and bake in her younger years and always had a full house. In her golden years, she loved to kick up her heals and go out dancing. If she wasn’t dancing, you normally would see her driving through New Waterford on her scooter “Rascal”. Johanna will be sadly missed by her daughters, Dorothy (Jackie) with whom she resided, Ellen, Anna (Paul), Pauline, Cathy, Marion (Andreas), Marlene, Jennifer, sons, Dougie (Wendy), Paddy, Danny, Peter; sisters, Shirley, Ellen; brothers, Gervis, Francis, grandkids, great-grand kids, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Johanna was predeceased by two loves of her life, the 1st she met in her younger years and was taken away tragically, Douglas Read and her 2nd love who passed away seven years ago, Peter McGillivary; son, Duane, brothers, Bernie, Wilfred, sisters, Dorothy and Patricia. Visitation for Johanna will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2016 in Curry’s Glace Bay Funeral Home, 775 Main St. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, May 13th at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Cremation will follow with interment in the parish cemetery at a later date. A reception will be held in the parish hall. Donations in Johanna’s memory may be made to the CCU of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
