Dan was a red seal millwright, working at Devco in his early career. In 1997 he moved to Alberta and worked at Shell Oil Fort McMurray and Edmonton, as a millwright, Supervisor and mechanical co-ordinator. He retired to Glace Bay in 2014. Left to mourn him are his wife Kitty Burke-MacDonald, sons Andrew (Melissa), Edmonton, John Barry, Fort McMurray, daughter Rebecca (George) Burke-Smith, Edmonton, grandchildren Parker, Delilah and Declan, sister Terry (Garfield) Andrews, brothers Todd (Nancy), Lower Sackville, Jim (Linda), Dartmouth, Bill (Stephanie) London, Ont. He was predeceased by his daughter Holly and his parents Monica and Dan Sr. Dan was known for his friendly outgoing nature and ability to make friends easily. He enjoyed fishing, especially with his grandchildren. He valued his wife and family most of all and carried God in his heart. He will be sadly missed. Cremation has taken place. As per Dan's wishes, there will be a private family service only. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Glace Bay Food Bank would be appreciated. "It is foolish to mourn the man who died. William 'Billy' Holm Passed in: South Bar Passed on: April 28th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Billy Holm on April 28, 2016 at the Celtic Court Guest Home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Billy and Cecilia (Gillis) Holm. Billy was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 682 where he spent many years as a pipefitter, working at many major projects throughout Cape Breton to include the Heavy Water Plant and the modernization of Sydney Steel to list a few. Later on Billy owned and operated Hub Taxi, a local taxi service where he developed many relationships within the community. In his early years you could find Billy in the ring where he had a passion for boxing and fighting in genera, which he gained from his Uncles Henry, Carl, Billy (Father) and Emil, who were known as the fighting Danes all of which were inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame back in 1986. Billy will always be remembered as a force to be reckoned with even into his later years. Billy was also an avid horseman where he trained and raced horses at Tartan Downs. Raising and training hunting dogs, as well as a general love of the outdoors, nature, and animals, continued throughout his life. Bill is survived by his loving wife Beverly (Fraser); son Billy; daughter Rhonda; grandchildren Brett and Mitchell; son Eric (Cathy), grandchildren Jennifer, Mason, and Maddie; great-grandchildren Kendall and Carleigh. Also survived by his sisters Clare, Lorraine, Sheila and his brother Billy; brother-in-law Alex (Helena) Fraser; sisters-in-law Carolyn Miles and Harriet (Joe) Higgins, also many nieces and nephews. Special Thank You to the amazing nurses and staff at Celtic Court. The care and constant support will always be remembered. This meant so much to our family during this difficult time. Muriel Isabel Curtis Born In: Antigonish, Canada Born: February 16th, 1939 Passed in: St. Georges Channel, Canada Passed on: April 29th, 2016 Muriel Isabel Curtis, age 77 of St. George’s Channel, Richmond Co. It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Friday, April 29, 2016 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston after a courageous battle with cancer. Muriel was born in Antigonish on Feb. 16, 1939 to the late William 'Bill' and Effie (Balsillie) Bayne. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, John 'Buddy'; sons, Todd (Laurie Jarvis), Cold Lake, Alta.; Craig (Lori), St. George’s Channel; Nanny’s girls, Nicole, Charlotte, Grace, Hannah; brothers, Bill (Phyllis), Indiana; David, Sydney; nieces, Kelly, Tracy and Kim; nephew, Mike; aunt, Helen, Ontario; many cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews. There will be no visitation or service by Muriel’s request. Burial in MacKay Cemetery, St George’s Channel at a later date. Muriel would like to thank Dr. Collins, Dr. Pluta, Dr. Jensen and Dr. Cooper, Nancy Cameron and the many nurses and homecare workers who have taken care of her these past few years. Barbara Jean Keeping Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: April 28th, 2016 It is with profound sadness we the family announce the passing of Barbara Jean Keeping, age 51, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Thursday, April 28, 2016. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence `Mitt’ (Campbell) Bennett, and was a member of Calvin United Church. Barbara was an extremely caring person, who would always lend a hand to anyone in need. She enjoyed a good game of bingo, playing cards with her friends and she was an excellent homemaker. Above all else, Barbara’s life was dedicated to her family, whom she absolutely adored. She leaves behind to mourn her passing her loving husband of 25 years, Cecil `Jimmie’ Keeping; son Christopher (Farrah); daughter Candace; her pride and joy and the light of her life, her five grandchildren, Bryson, Parker, Allie, Keira and Cody, all of New Waterford. Barbara will also be sadly missed by her sisters Susie Bennett, Helen Campbell; brothers Russell Bennett, Thomas and Marcus Simon; aunt Dorothy Parr; special friend Joan Gillis; goddaughter Robin Campbell; many nieces, nephews and friends; especially her niece Kelly Campbell, who was also her best friend. Besides her parents, Barbara was also predeceased by stepson Jimmy Gallant; sister Joanne Bickerton; in-laws Cecil and Caroline Keeping; grandparents Susie and Brick Campbell, Marcus and Charlotte Bennett; special nephew Devyn O’Connell; brothers in-law Wayne Bickerton and Roddy Campbell. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Duncan Roach will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2016, in Calvin United Church, New Waterford. Following the funeral service, all are invited to meet with Barbara’s family during a reception at the KOC Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford. Lillian 'Mae' Kelloway Born In: Glace Bay Passed on: April 28th, 2016 It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Lillian ‘Mae’ Kelloway of Port Caledonia on April 28, 2016. Mae was born in Glace Bay and was one of seven children of the late Richard and Lil Clarke. Mae is survived by her husband and best friend, David Kelloway; daughters, Mona (Tom) Arbuckle, Grande Cache, Alta., Claudia Aucoin, Grand Cache, Alta.; son, Wayne (Vivian) Aucoin, Winnipeg, Man. and stepchildren, Theresa Kelloway, Balls Creek, N.S.; Wendy (Tom) Boland, Kitchener, Ont. and David (Gerri) Kelloway, Donkin, N.S. She is also survived by grandchildren, Lisa, Janet, Daylene, Brandy, Danielle, Christopher, Scott, Chris, Emily, Alisha, Daniel, Brittany, T.J., David, Tyson and great-grandchildren, Cody, Jeremy, Sam, Hunter and Lillian Mae. Mae enjoyed a good game of darts and cards with friends. She was also great at working with her hands; she could go from baking in the kitchen to building her house. In following her wishes cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2 p.m. with Rev. Bob Biggar officiating. The family would like to say a special thank you to doctors and nurses at both Cape Breton Regional and Glace Bay hospitals. Clarence “Sonny” Kelloway Bathurst, NB Clarence “Sonny” Kelloway, 1934-2016, of Broadview Street, Bathurst, NB, passed away on Wednesday APril 27, 2016 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst, NB, after a brief illness, at the age of 81 yrs. He was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, NS. He is survived by his wife, D.A. Plourde, three children, his daughter, Karen, his two sons, Robert and Steven, four grandchildren, Amanda, Jamie, Robert Jr. and maatthew. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Glace Bay, Cape Breton at a date and time to be announced.
