Born in Glace Bay, on June 5, 1931, Eileen was the daughter of the late Thomas and Virginia (Nearing) Lind. She grew up in Port Morien and worked for several years at the Point Edward Hospital and later at the Little Flower Addiction Centre. She was an avid bingo player, a member of the Sydney Mines Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the North Sydney Senior Citizens & Pensioners Club. Eileen was a member of the CWL and Holy Family Parish in Sydney Mines. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Eileen is survived by her only daughter Diane (Gerard) Steele, North Sydney and grandson Chris (Katelyn) Steele, North Sydney, and also a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Eugene Ignacio and the nurses and staff at the Northside Guest Home, Joseph Hall, for the care shown to mom. She was predeceased by her husband James Lyle, an infant daughter Mary Eileen, her brothers Bernie and Carl and sisters Ida and Scelina. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral mass for Eileen will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Church with Rev. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines. Dorothy Morgan Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: May 21st, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Dorothy Morgan on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Dorothy was the daughter of Blanche (Cochrane) and the late Patrick Burrows. Dorothy was originally employed at MacLeod’s bookstore in Glace Bay, followed by the K-Mart in Sydney, and finally with Atomic Energy of Canada at the Heavy Water Plant site. She enjoyed shopping with her mother, and in her earlier years digging clams, fishing smelt, and picking blueberries. She had a big heart and enjoyed a big lobster dinner on her birthday, which she was always quick to share. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Clarie Morgan and nephew Ian Burrows. She will be greatly missed by her brothers, George Burrows (Loraine) and Chris Burrows (Debbie), as well as niece Nancy and children Billy and Nick, nephew Robert (Courtney) and children Norah and Madelyn, and by many friends. Visitation will take place Thursday, May 26, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church in Glace Bay. Interment will be in St Anthony’s Cemetery. Carol Donalda 'Donna' Smith Born: February 9th, 1947 Passed in: Sydney Mines It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sister and friend Carol Donalda ‘Donna’ Smith. Donna was formerly of Sydney Mines, but has been a long-time resident of the Northside Guest Home. Born on Feb. 9, 1947, Donna was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Catherine (MacDonald) MacLean of Florence. Donna was very active in her community over the years in bowling, Tops, senior clubs, shopping tours, and especially bingo. Her sisters were privileged to spend time with her on a daily basis and enjoyed her company and dry humour as well as cared for and spoiled her. Through her illness she never complained or asked for anything. Donna is survived by her siblings, Maxi (Sharon), Ontario, Beryl (Donnie) Forrest, Millcreek, Allie, Frenchvale, Louvine (Lenny) Bonnar, Florence, Darlene MacLennan, Millville, Sherry (Joey) Thurbide, New Campbellton, Kenny (Cathy), Florence, and BJ (Frankie) Georges River. Also surviving are daughters, Dawn Roberts and Linda Smith, grandchildren, Ashley (Kelsey), Alex, Haley, Jasmine and Jerrett, who she raised until her illness. Jerrett, you were her boy! She is also survived by great-granddaughter Nora, niece and goddaughter Christa, special niece Cathy-Anne, and grandniece Carlie, who she called her seventh grandchild. Besides her parents, Donna was predeceased by her husband William (Duke) Smith, first granddaughter Felicity, brother Billy, and brother-in-law Billy MacLennan. Cremation has taken place as per her wishes, and there will be a family only graveside service officiated by Major Kent at the New Campbellton Cemetery under the direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home. Mary (McNeil) MacNeil Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: May 20th, 2016 It is with sadness we announce the passing of a loving mother, Mary MacNeil, age 82, formerly of Dominion and later a resident of Glace Bay, at the Glace Bay Hospital on Friday, May 20, 2016. Born in Glace Bay, Mary was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Jannie (MacKay) McNeil. Mary was a longtime resident of Mitchell Avenue, Dominion and recently of Glace Bay. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and St. Eugene's. She was a member of Dominion Pensioners Club for many years and was bartender there as well. Mary enjoyed playing darts at the Sandbar and also was an avid card player. Mary will be sadly missed by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Kevin (Cathy) McNeil, Dominion, sister, Ann Howett, Ont, brothers, Charlie Joe, Edmonton, Raymond, Sydney and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ignatius ‘Naish’ MacNeil, brothers, Robert ‘Bob’ and James ‘Alex’. Verus Cecilia 'Bub's (Kelly) Nolan Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: May 20th, 2016 Surrounded by her loving family, Verus Nolan, age 89 of Carrol Street, Glace Bay passed away peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Cecelia Kelly. During her earlier years, she was employed with Shore’s Grocery. She married Leo Nolan in 1946 and together they raised their family. Verus, or ‘Bubs’ as she was affectionately known, was a kind and generous woman always putting family first and making every occasion special. Mom had a wonderful sense of humour and was a great storyteller. She loved nothing more than to share her memories of growing up in ‘The Hub’ with friends and family. She was an active member of the community enjoying local events, volunteering and was the only woman to run for Mayor of Glace Bay. Verus was an avid reader and writer and loved to get together with her friends for a good game of bingo. Verus is survived by her daughters, Leona Caume, Denise (Gerrard), Cecelia, Glace Bay, Caroline (Roger) Bannister, Fredericton; grandchildren, Laurie (Charlie) Nicholls, Ottawa; Shawn Marsden, Edmonton; great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Nolan Ratchford and Cameron Ferguson, great-great-granddaughter, Aleaha; brother, Jimmy (Sally) Kelly, Tower Road; sister-in-law, Kit Kelly, Glace Bay; special nephew, Kevin MacMullin and nieces, Donna Morean and Edwinna Munroe; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Verus was predeceased by her husband, Leo in 2009, sisters, Theresa (Dan) MacMullin, Barbara (Charlie) Kennedy and a brother, Edward ‘Brother’ Kelly. Theresa Catherine Neary Born: October 6th, 1945 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: May 19th, 2016 It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Theresa Catherine Neary (Nicholson) at the age of 70, on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital, after a short and brave battle with cancer. Born Oct. 6, 1945 to John and Theresa Nicholson, Theresa was the twelfth child of a family of 14. She lived a simple life with never a bad word to say, her heart was huge and would do anything for you. She never knew the word no. Theresa worked for years at the British Canadian Coop until its closure. She is survived by daughter Joanne (Dave), grandson Liam of Ontario, her son and rock Peter, at home, her son-in-law Shannon Boutilier, grandson Colton. Also surviving are stepchildren Monica (Blair) Munden and their family Blair P., Nicole, Erin and Ryan and the 10 great-grandchildren, Sandy and his son Marc Neary and Carmen (Gus) and their children Jason and Karlene and two great-grandkids, her brothers, Joe Nicholson Glace Bay and Phonse, B.C.; sisters Cora Nutter, Ida Taylor and Margie Caume. Besides her parents she was predeceased by husband Peter, daughter Danette Boutilier and brothers and sisters. We would like to thank the nurses and staff of third south, the palliative care team, her VONs for their professional care, Dr. Dias and a huge thank you to Cora Nutter her sister for the hours she sat at Theresa’s side. There will be no visitation cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A Mass will be held at Holy Cross Church on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 2 p.m., with Fr.
