Shirley passed at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, following complications post surgery, despite the compassionate care of the wonderful staff in the ICU 5.2 unit. Born Dec. 1, 1943, Shirley was the eldest daughter of the late Mildred and Michael Ratchford. Shirley is survived by her husband of 50 years, Brian F. Bennett; son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Ericka; and their three beautiful boys, Logan, Liam and Lochlan, who were a constant source of joy and happiness. Also surviving is daughter-in-law Bisa Bennett, grandson Michael, and granddaughter, Tijana. Shirley leaves behind sisters Donna Quinn (Steve) and Phyllis Rudderham (the late John); with whom she shared a very special bond. Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her eldest son, Christopher. A graduate of St. Rita’s Hospital School of Nursing, Shirley spent decades working as an X-ray technician. Over the span of her career, Shirley’s kindness, positivity, and compassion resulted in life-long friendships with her colleagues. She would tell you that her best career years were spent travelling on the province’s first mobile mammography unit. Shirley loved her job, and loved helping people, which was evident to the many women she met through the breast screening program. A force to be reckoned with in the kitchen, Shirley will be forever remembered for her homemade pizza and her inability to let someone leave her house empty handed. She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. Visitation for Shirley will be held at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home , 564 Alexandra S., Sydney‬ ‪on Tuesday, May 17, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral Home ‪on Wednesday, May 18, at 11 a.m.‬, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, or the charity of your choice. Dorothy Doucette Born In: Scotchtown Passed on: October 22nd, 2015 Dorothy Doucette, Glace Bay, passed away on Oct. 22, 2015 at the age of 76. Born in Scotchtown, she was the daughter of the late John Charles and Mary Ann (Poirier) Bourgeois. Dorothy is survived by her husband Charley; sons, Lenny (Mary Ellen) Ontario, Charley, Glace Bay, Frances (Ginny), Glace Bay, Bobby (Belinda), Glace Bay; brothers, Leo, Wilfred, Henry, Melvin, Raymond; sisters, Evelyn, Lorraine, Pauline and Diane; grandchildren, Lenny, Jennifer, Jordan O’Neil and Jordan MacNeil. She was also predeceased by brothers, Tom, Charley, Peter, Willie John and Thomas, sisters, Mary and Tilley. Cremation has taken place. A chapel service will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 9 a.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Mary Catherine Kennedy Born In: Glace Bay Born: October 1st, 1920 Passed in: River Ryan Passed on: May 13th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Catherine Kennedy, age 95, on Friday, May 13, 2016 at home surrounded by her family. Born in Glace Bay, Oct. 1, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Hughie J. and Mary Catherine (MacNeil) MacDonald and was a longtime member of the former St. Michael's Church, River Ryan. Mary is survived by her loving children, Michael, River Ryan; Patricia (Fred) Cormier, Halifax; John Hugh (Karen), L'Ardoise; Edward (Charlene), River Ryan; and Kevin (Jeanette), New Waterford; seven grandchildren, Michael Paul, Halifax; Stephen (Jessica), Calgary; Jacquelyn (Jason) O'Keefe, Halifax; Elizabeth, New Waterford; Shaun, Halifax; Kathleen and John, both of New Waterford; sister in-law Elizabeth Cochrane and her family, Deep River, Ont. Besides her parents,Mary was also predeceased by her husband Leo, sisters, Margie and Catherine, brothers, Hector, Michael and Stephen. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley, in celebration of Mary's life will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2016 in St. Leonard's Church. Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan. Following the interment, all are invited to a reception at the KOC, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, to meet with Mary's family to continue celebrating her life. Memorial donations in Mary's memory, may be made to a charity of one's choice. Walsh Born In: Georges River Born: November 8th, 1926 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: May 15th, 2016 We regret to announce the passing of James Edmond Walsh on Saturday, May 14, 2016, in the Veterans Wing of Harbour View Hospital in Sydney Mines, at the age of 89. Born in George’s River, Nov. 8, 1926, Jim was the son of the late Vincent Walsh and Caroline (Roach) Walsh. He is survived by sons, Rob (Rose) Walsh, Victoria, B.C., Gerry Walsh, Victoria, B.C., Neil (Judy) Walsh, North Sydney; daughters, Karen (Jackie) Robinson, North Sydney, Rev. Lynn McKinnon, Alberton, P.E.I.; sisters, Caroline Campbell and Catherine (Kay) Logue, North Sydney; grandchildren, Vince, Ray, Esther, Rebecca, Bill (Crystal), Johnathan, Robbie, Mark and Shannon and great-grandchildren, Gracie, Gavin, Ella, Aidan and was father by choice of Marlene (Jim) Bona, Long Island and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Jean (Amey) Walsh, his brothers, Matthew, Vincent, Robert and Joseph Walsh, his sister Rose Baldwin, son-in-law Joe McKinnon. He attended St. Matthew Wesley United Church North Sydney and was a former member of the AOTS Men’s Club. Jim was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany as a tank driver with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers. He was a member of Branch 19, Royal Canadian Legion and looked forward each year to visiting local schools prior to Remembrance Day to share his experiences with the students. He started his mining career as a road maker in Princess colliery and retired as chief fire prevention supervisor for Devco. His innovations in underground firefighting have been accepted as international standards in the mining industry. He owned and operated Hillside Laundromat in North Sydney for several years. Jim was a dedicated member of the North Sydney Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years and was a long serving fire chief of the department. He can even be seen in the movie Shattered City the Halifax Explosion, with Kenny Morris, riding NSFD’s 1919 LaFrance fire truck. He was the former EMO co-ordinator for the Town of North Sydney. Jim was a tireless worker for the North Sydney Historical Society and was president of the society for many years. He was instrumental in the building of the North Sydney Heritage Museum, which has a room named in his honour. He was awarded the Canada 125 medal for his service to his community. An avid bowler, he and Jean were longtime members of the mixed bowling league in Sydney Mines and Branch 19 RCL’s senior’s league in North Sydney. They enjoyed their summers at “the trailer” in Groves Point and later Kempt Head. The family would like to thank the staff of Harbour View’s Veterans Wing for the comfort and care they provided these last years and Dr. Peter Poulos for his care and dedication. A visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in W.J Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with Rev. Nancy Ritchie officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. A reception will follow at the North Sydney Firefighters Club. Memorial donations may be made to the Harbourview Hospital Veterans Wing c/o Northside General Hospital Foundation. Margaret Roberta (McIntosh) Sexton Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: May 13th, 2016 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Roberta (McIntosh) Sexton at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on May 13, 2016 at the age of 94 years. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the eldest daughter of James and Katie (Vickers) McIntosh. She is survived by her sister, Mary; three children Barry, Judy and Jeanne; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Howard Sexton. Funeral arrangements are in the care of W. J. Dooley Funeral Service Ltd., 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service details to be announced at a later date.
