Born Jan. 1, 1923, in Sydney, Mom was the last surviving member of the Union Street Almons. Daughter of the late Strickland and Mary Ann (MacDonald) Almon, she was predeceased by her second mother, Julia (Whalen) Almon; brothers, Danny Almon (Marge), Michael Almon (Alice); sisters Tessie MacDonald (Mickey) and Evelyn MacDonald (Danny). She was also recently predeceased by her soulmate and love of her life Walter MacKinnon. Married for 65 years, they were barely apart a day in their long and loving marriage. Prior to her marriage in 1949, Genevieve worked in Toronto for Mike’s Directory as a telephone operator, and later as a receptionist for the Dept. of National Defence in Point Edward. Genevieve was foremost a lady in all ways, a gentle compassionate woman who loved all living things, her husband and children most of all. She was the kind of lady who put Vaseline on the cat’s paws because she was worried their paws would get chapped in the winter months. She will be remembered for her elegance, her fierce protectiveness of those she loved and her strawberry-rhubarb pie. She is survived by her children, Gary MacKinnon (Louise Williams, deceased), Blair MacKinnon (Guy Preville), Jennifer MacKinnon, Ursula MacKinnon (Bill Penney), and her grandson, Peter Blair MacKinnon Nicholson. The family would like to thank her special caregivers Ann and Mary Vassalo, Darlene Watson and the home care team from Continuing Care N.S. that allowed us to keep Mom in her Columbia Street home for as long as possible. And finally, the loving staff at Harbourstone who made her final year comfortable and homey. Mom’s goodbye will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Visitation will take place on Friday, May 6 from 4-6 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 7 at 3 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of N.S. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry. com. Lynn Marie Drinovz Halifax, NS Passed away suddenly, yet peacefully in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the early morning of April 29, 2016, with her only daughter, Carly, nearby. Born in New Waterford, Lynn was the daughter of late Carl Drinovz and Shirley (LeBlanc) Nolan. Lynn moved to Halifax at the age of 19 and began pursuing many different careers, but it was Northwoodcare that won over her heart in early Nov. 1980. It was there that she became a personal care worker and spent the rest of her working career. She also developed strong ties to the patients and mourned their losses as if she were a family member over the years. When Carly was 10 years old and in Grade 4, Lynn decided to go back to school at NSCC, for a diploma in Business Information Technology. That year was the hardest year of their lives, but Lynn exhibited great strength, positivity and determination through that time. Following her schooling, she began pursuing different clerical jobs at Northwood, but when she started working for Charles Kwan, Lynn really found her calling and true happiness. She would brag about it all the time and that she had the best boss in the world and how lucky she was to work for him. Throughout Carly’s life, Lynn and she went through the ups and downs like any Mother/ Daughter relationship. During Carly’s four years of my living out of province, their relationship blossomed the most. Every conversation she would have with her Mom, some way or another Lynn would always let her know that she was her greatest accomplishment and that Carly was her entire world. It took Carly many years to realize what an incredible woman she was, and there is no doubt in her mind that no one else on this planet could have raised her better than Lynn. She was simply the best. Lynn is survived by her one and only daughter, Carly (Ben) Drinovz; her mother, Shirley Nolan; brothers, Robert (Bernadette), David (Tarryn), Darren, Andrew and Walter (Rosemary) and sister, Carol Anne and also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Carl Drinovz. Carly would like to thank the staff from Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas for going above and beyond for her mother and also for me during that time. She would like to also extend her thanks to each and every person who has reached out to her during this time, she needed this support in every way. A service will be held on Friday, May 13th, at 2:30 p.m. in the Shirley Burnstein Hall at Northwood at 2615 Northwood Terrace, Halifax June Rutledge St. Peter’s It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, June Beryl Rutledge, age 87, on Friday, May 6, 2016, at Richmond Villa Long Term Care Facility, St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, N.S. Born in London, England, June was the daughter of the late Arthur Harry and Florence Caroline (nee Yallop) Trickett, also of London England. She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie Albert Rutledge of Fourchu, Cape Breton, and siblings, Edmund, Miriam (George), Roy (Isabel) and Noel (Joyce), all of London. June was a full-time mother and then school worker in England, who came to Cape Breton in 1977, with her husband, Leslie, on his retirement. Leslie had been a fisherman and lighthouse keeper in Fourchu who went to England with the Canadian Army in the Second World War, met and married June, then stayed to raise their family and become a foreman decorator. June was a wonderful mother in hard times, who always put the family first and did a great job raising the children despite many difficulties. June fell in love with Cape Breton, particularly Fourchu, but, especially Leslie’s local family and friends, such that, 12 years after his death, when her children moved her back to England in 2003, she returned just three months later to live out her life just enjoying the community and knitting. Cape Breton had become her true home and we understand that. Her family would like to sincerely thank those wonderful local members of Leslie’s family and friends, as well as the wonderful staff of both, the Richmond County Day Care team and Richmond Villa Long Term Care Facility for the warmth, friendship and great care bestowed on June throughout her time here, but particularly the last 10 years. She truly loved you all. June is survived by all her UK-based family who remained ever in her thoughts despite varying contact: daughter, Carol and son, Stephen (Julie and former wife, Christine); grandchildren, Claire Butcher, Emma (Richard) Mancini, Benjamin (Drazena) Rutledge, Thomas (Zara) Rutledge, Nicholas (Sally) Rutledge, Elizabeth Rutledge and Michael Rutledge; great-grandchildren, Isabella Mancini and Harry Charles Susa-Rutledge (born March 11, 2016); numerous nephews and nieces, including Graham (Janet) and family. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at Fourchu United Church on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Nancy WhitneyLatham officiating. Interment (with Leslie) will be at Little Hill Cemetery, Fourchu. Arrangements are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel, telephone 1-902-5390500. No flowers please, but memorial donations may be made to June’s beloved Fourchu United Church.
