Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Linda (Davidson) Lockman and the late John Lockman. April was employed at Stream Call Centre. She enjoyed reading, using the computer and was a great lover of animals, especially her cat, Lucy. But mostly, April will be remembered as a quiet, easygoing young woman who would help anybody in there time of need. Besides her mother, April is survived by her partner, Derrick MacNeil, stepson, Andrew, stepdaughter, Erin, sisters, Barbara Gallant (Richard), Glace Bay, Brenda Lockman, Halifax, a brother, John, Glace Bay, two nieces, two nephews, aunts and uncles. She was predeceased by her father, John in 2000 and maternal/paternal grandparents, Charles and Daisy Davidson, Gerald and Gertrude Lockman. No visitation. Cremation, under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay, N.S. has taken place. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau is Wednesday, 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport followed by interment in the parish cemetery. The reception is in the parish hall. Florence Elizabeth Drake Born In: Millville Cape Breton Born: October 28th, 1933 Passed in: Dartmouth Passed on: May 28th, 2016 It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Florence Elizabeth Drake (Foo-ah) who left us peacefully in her sleep on May 28, 2016. Florence was born on Oct. 28, 1933, the daughter of the late William and Julia Quinn of Millville, Cape Breton. After attending Normal College, she taught in Alder Point, Bras d’Or, CFB Greenwood, St. Hubert and Dartmouth. She spent many years at Shannon Park and Notting Park Elementary in Dartmouth teaching grades primary and one where her students became a part of her extended family and she loved seeing them throughout the years. She was a woman of deep faith and a proud member of St. Paul’s congregation. She served as a Eucharistic minister, catechist and volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul. A kind and generous soul, her door was always open and a meal or a cup of tea always offered. Foo-ah loved music, cards and letters, a good game of scat, a good drink, listening to CBC and chatting on the phone. Above all else Florence devoted her entire life to her extended children, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was a mother to all. Every one of her children received her full support and personal praise. She left her mark on every single one of them and will be sadly missed and never forgotten. She treasured time spent with close friends; especially her Muffin Club girls. She was predeceased by her parents, brother, Danny, brother-in-law George, sister-in-law Valerie, three siblings who died in infancy, her in-laws and nephew Robert Drake. Surviving Florence are her husband of 50 years, Don Drake; her sisters Mary Fenerty, Anita (Bobby) Anthony; sister-in-law Ann Quinn; brothers Alex (Mary) Quinn, Andrew Quinn; sister-in-law June (Lloyd) Schnare; brother-in-law Bob Drake; godchildren Julia Anthony and Donnie Quinn and by numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral Mass to take place on May 31 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Parish Dartmouth. Burial will take place in Cape Breton during the summer. Jonathan James McGuigan Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: May 26th, 2016 It is with broken hearts that we the family announce the passing of our beloved Jonathan, age 34. He lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney surrounded by his loved ones. He fought his illness with strength and courage. Born in Sydney, he was the son of James ‘Jamie’ and Janet (Rose) McGuigan. Jonathan was an avid outdoorsman. He loved boating and camping with Lindsay and his family. He spent much of his childhood in Campbelldale and later Point Edward where he made many life time friends. He loved going to Mama's house to eat especially Jig's dinner every Sunday. Besides his parents, Jamie and Janet, he is survived by the love of his life, Lindsay Margettie, his mother-in-law, Peggy Margetti; his brothers, James (Arlene) and Jason; nieces Jessica, Heather; nephew, Jordan and many aunts and uncles. He is also survived by his special friends Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hawco, their son, Keith; his best friends, Justin Doyle and Kelly MacNeil as well as his fur babies, Daisy and Buster. Jonathan was predeceased by his grandparents, Jim and Rita McGuigan and Dorothy Rose. We would like to say thank you to the staff of 4A, Dr. Burns and the Palliative Care team for their excellent care and compassion they gave to Jonathan. Cremation has taken place. Rita Julia (Conn) Sampson Born In: Prime Brook Passed in: Sydney Passed on: May 27th, 2016 It is with broken hearts and profound sadness, we the family announce the passing of our cherished wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Rita Julia (Conn) Sampson, 85, on Friday, May 27, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney surrounded by her loving family. Born in Prime Brook, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helene (Dithurbide) Conn. Rita was an avid bingo player and an amazing baker. She took great pride in taking care of her home, husband, children and grandchildren.bShe was always there to help anyone. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt and nanny to all. Rita is survived by her adoring husband, Edmund Sampson; sons, Simon (Debby), Westmount, Tom (Jodi), California; daughters, Betty Anne (Mel) Richardson, JoAnn (Jimmy) MacQueen, Alice (Darrell) Hardy all of Sydney. She adored her 11 grandchildren, Crystal (Julie), Jade Lynn, Clint (Julie), Chris (Jessica) Troy (Stacy), Tara (Tim), Janice (Frankie), Joshua, Tara, Matthew (Tasha) and Katie (Will) and 10 great grandchildren, Cole, Aurora, Thomas, Haille, Paige, Jayden, Courtney, Hunter, Hailey and Reilly. Rita was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her eight brothers, Morris, Jeff, Elmer, George, Alex, Emile, Freddy, Raymond; two sisters, Rose and Mary. We would like to thank the wonderful staff of 4A, 4B, An Cala Palliative Care and Dr. Puppala for the compassionate care they took of Mom. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in the funeral home chapel.
