Born in Utrecht, Holland in 1933, the daughter of the late Cornelia den Blanken and Johannis van den Bosch. She immigrated to Canada in 1955, settling in Cape Breton, where she lived and raised her family. She was a hardworking, determined individual who accepted things as they came to her one day at a time. She was employed over the years as a seamstress, homemaker, and childcare provider. She was an avid knitter, reader and gardener. She leaves behind her cat “Jack”, her trusted companion. She is survived by her sons, Francis (Shannon), Georges River, John (Pam), Nyanza, Gerry (Daphne), North Sydney, Leo (Kim Fenwick), Fredericton N.B.; daughters, Maria (Roderick) Nicholson, Big Baddeck, and Pat (Gordon) Matheson, Baddeck. Loving grandmother to 17 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one greatgreat-grandchild. Corrie leaves behind her sisters, Nel van den Bosch, Ria van den Bosch, Jannie Saalberg, and Adrie Wahle, Holland. Special thank you to all the caregivers, too numerous to mention, that helped her over the years. Cremation has taken place and as per her wishes there will be no visitation. The funeral will be held at St. Michaels Church, Baddeck, on May 16, 2016, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Michaels Cemetery. Family flowers only by request. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice. Rita Ann (WIlson) Higgins Reserve Mines It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Rita Ann (Wilson) Higgins, age 70, on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at home. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Agnes (LeBlanc) Wilson. Rita was a secretary for Blue Water Home Improvement and Bob Wilson Sales. In her earlier years she worked for the Cape Breton Hospital cleaning staff. She loved animals, especially her little dog ‘Angel’. Surviving are her brother, Douglas ‘Dougie’ (Judy) Wilson; sister, Darlene (Wendell) Maskell, Middle Sackville. Rita was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Higgins, in 1994. In honouring her wishes, cremation has taken place, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 1.30 p.m., with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements are under the care direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Ruth Mouland It is with saddened hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ruth Dorval (Simmons) Mouland on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at home. Born Sept. 19, 1923, in Jacquet River, Restigouche, N.B., she was a daughter of the late George and Mary Ida (Goode) Simmons. Ruth is survived by her husband, Browning; niece, Brenda Oakley (Robert Edwards), Sydney; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-grandnieces, great grandnephews and their families. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Ruth was predeceased by 22 brothers and sisters. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Monday 2 p.m., with Pastor Bruce DeYoung officiating. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www. sydneymemorialchapel.ca or email Catherine 'Claire' Foreman Passed in: Sarnia, Ontario, Canada Passed on: May 13th, 2016 With heavy hearts, we announce the death of our wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Catherine ‘Claire’ Foreman (McIntyre) died on May 13, 2016 in Sarnia, Ont., after a short battle with cancer. She was 85 years young. Claire leaves behind her beloved husband, Richard ‘Dick’; her children, Anne-Marie Rutherford (Larry), Richard (Joanne), Jamie (Karla), Lisa (Grant) and Krista (Chris); her grandchildren, Michael Smith (Josie), Melissa Hoey (Bob), Jonathan Kirby (Christine), Alana Timmers (Gerard), Kristina Bergeron (Mike), Danielle Ireland (Kevin), Katie Swain, and Jack Hammill, and 10 cherished great-grandchildren. Claire was a sister to many, and had unbreakable bond with her sisters, Marguerite (Stephenson) and the late Catherine (Piraine). Claire was preceded in death by her Aunt Jessie, who raised her from infancy, and her parents, Thomas McIntyre and Mae Fleming. Known as Claire, she was born on March 11, 1931 in Glace Bay, N.S. She adored Cape Breton and was proud of her Scottish heritage. Claire loved a cool breeze on a warm sunny day, the ocean air, the taste of homemade jam and the touch of brand new white tea towels. Claire graduated at the top of her class from St. Anne’s High School in Glace Bay and from Truro Normal School. At the age of 60 she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Windsor. Claire was a devoted teacher for over 35 years and spent many a day instilling the love of learning in hundreds of young hearts and minds. It has been said that, “All you ever REALLY need to know was learned in kindergarten”. She knew this to be true! Claire was a kind, gentle and patient soul whose unwavering commitment to her family was admirable. Claire married Dick in 1956. This year marked their 60th wedding anniversary. ‘Mom’ to five, ‘grandma’ to eight, and great-grandma to 10, she would proudly and humbly admit that these were her greatest accomplishments. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on the 5th floor at Bluewater Health for their attentive care and treatment. Hilda May Proctor Born In: Ingramport NS Born: December 3rd, 1926 Passed in: South Haven Passed on: May 11th, 2016 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Hilda May (White) Proctor, at her home in South Haven on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 in her 90th year. Born Dec. 3, 1926 in Ingramport, N.S., she moved to Toronto where she met her future husband Russell James Proctor, of Shelburne, Ont. and they wed in 1950. After the birth of their daughter, she became a foster and adoptive parent and general neighbourhood mother. Mrs. P's home was always open and welcoming to all. In 1990, Russ & Hilda retired to South Haven, Cape Breton, where they were welcomed with true East Coast hospitality. She was an active member of her community. Hilda enjoyed time bird watching and in her gardens and looked forward to when the days would be just a wee bit warmer. She was a longtime member of the Atlantic Mission Society, and attended the Ephraim Scott Presbyterian Church in South Haven. She was a loving mother of Sharon Proctor and friend, David Evans of South Haven; grandmother of Christena & the late Dave Mels of Delhi, Ont.; Gerald Doyle of Regina, Sask., and Michael & Kristina Doyle, of Delhi, Ont.; great-grandmother of Desiree, David, Kayla, Dakota, Kyle, Ashley, Emma, and Poppy all of Ontario; sister of Vera Oliver of Milton, N.S., sister-in-law of Marjorie White of Liverpool, N.S.; aunt and great-aunt to many. Predeceased by her parents, Harry Samuel and Selina Ann (Finch) White; her husband, Russell; son, Keith; brothers, Bill, George and Bernie White; sisters, Alice Crew, Irene Ross and Doris Thistle. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with a service following at Ephraim Scott Presbyterian Church, South Haven on Sunday, May 15th with Rev. Brian MacLeod officiating. Arrangements under the direction of MacAskill Funer Fraser Lawrence Burke Passed in: Burlington, Ontario, Canada Passed on: May 6th, 2016 Passed away at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the age of 76. Beloved husband of the late Elaine Burke (nee Cook). Son of the late Fraser and Frances Burke. Predeceased by his siblings, Mary Jo Loomis and William Burke. Survived by his good friends, Diana and Frank Lewis and their family. The family wish to thank Fraser’s neighbour and friend Glen Stewart for the wonderful care he gave Fraser over the years. Fraser retired from Dofasco as a crane operator after many years of service. Cremation has taken place. Fraser will be interred in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens in Nova Scotia with his wife. Russell 'Russ' Trenholm Russell ‘Russ’ Trenholm, 84, passed away Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Queensway Carlton Hospital, following complications associated with diabetes. He is survived by his children, Stephanie, Jill, Michele, Sven, Leif and their spouses; his 14 grandchildren; relatives in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Ontario; and close friends in Iceland, Ontario and Quebec. Born and raised in Cape Breton, N.S., he was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Trenholm (nee Hardy; also deceased), they lived together in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Montreal and Ottawa. Dad was very well respected by his peers in aviation for his expertise in flight operations and his vast aviation knowledge. He was very passionate about his career such that it became his hobby, and he used to say: "If you like what you are doing, you will not work another day in your life." He was an active member of the Shriners in Ottawa for many years. At his request, there will be no funeral service, and his ashes will be laid to rest in the Atlantic, off the coast of his beloved island of Cape Breton. Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be most welcome. Rest in peace, Dad.
