Together they worked in the full-time ministry as volunteers for seven years throughout Ontario and Nova Scotia. After the birth of their first child they settled in Glace Bay. Allen started the family business, Breton Maintenance Service, and endeavored to live by the Bible's principle; to live quietly, work with your hands, and walk decently. One of Allen's greatest joys was his volunteer work. For 32 years he was chairman of the Maritime Regional Building Committee, and had the privilege of working on construction projects for Kingdom Halls in the Maritimes, Newfoundland, and the Magdalen Islands. He also had the privilege of serving as a marrying officer in the province of Nova Scotia, presiding at the marriages of over 40 couples. Allen had great faith in, and his family takes great comfort from, the Bible's promise at Revelation 21:4 of a time when there will be no more pain, sorrow, or death here on earth.
