Born in North Sydney on Jan. 22, 1946, Jack was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Gordon) Gillis. In earlier years Jack worked on the Great Lake boats and later in construction as a carpenter, where he became a member of the Carpenters Union. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. He is survived by his children, daughter, Jacqueline (Dan) Pygiel, Halifax; sons, Tommy Gillis, Sydney Mines, John (Karen) Gillis, Virden, Manitoba, Donald (Tania) Gillis; son, Jackie (Allison) Barrie, Florence; daughter, Jackie Gillis, Sydney Mines; his companion, Audrey Steele; his three grandchildren, Travis Gillis, Cole Pygiel and Kaylee Gillis. Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by a brother, Thomas. The family would like to thank Hospice Palliative Care and special thanks to Dr. Peter Poulos who has been with Da from the beginning. There will be no visitation. A funeral service for Jack will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Marjorie (Boucher) Cameron Born In: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: April 10th, 1962 Passed in: Canada It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Marjorie Cameron (nee Boucher), 54, of Sydney, after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Marjorie passed peacefully, on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, surrounded by the love of her family. Marjorie was born on April 10, 1962, in Antigonish, N.S. She was the daughter of Marie Jeaneene (Fougere) Boucher and the late William John Boucher. She was raised in Havre Boucher (Cape Jack), graduating from Antigonish East High School in 1980, then going on to graduate from Nova Scotia Institute of Technology in 1982, as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. Following this, she went to work for the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, St. Rita Hospital, and then the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. In 2009, she became Quality Specialist/Point of Care Co-ordinator for the Cape Breton District Health Authority. Marjorie is fondly remembered for her strong work ethic and professional dedication — traits that she has passed on to her children. Marjorie is survived by soulmate and best friend, Gordon Cameron, with whom she shared nearly 34 years of marriage. She is also survived by her children, Christopher (Nicole) Cameron, Sydney; Melissa (Brian) Campbell, Sydney, and Amanda Cameron, Sydney. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Easton, Grace, Seth, and Ella. Marjorie was the “middle child” of nine children, a position she cherished, as part of a beautiful, close knit family. She fondly recalls having enough siblings “for a baseball team.” She is survived by her loving brothers and sisters, Charlie (Diane) Boucher, Calgary; Debbie (Gary) Brow, Havre Boucher; Anthony (Kathy) Boucher, Calgary; Ramona (Steve) MacAskill, Halifax; Brenda (Rick) Hanlon, Linwood; Patricia (Dale) DeCoste, Edmonton; Francine (Allan) MacQuarrie, Halifax; and Gregory (Sheryl) Boucher, Antigonish. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Adeline Cameron and brother-in-law, Blaise (Liz) Cameron. She will also be missed by her 22 nieces and nephews, friends, neighbours, and co-workers. Marjorie was predeceased by her father, William Boucher, and a brother in infancy, Leonard Joseph. Marjorie was an avid gardener of the most beautiful flowers and fresh vegetables. Her children and grandchildren will forever know the love and comfort of Nanny’s garden, and countless recipes for delicious home cooked meals. She was also extremely talented in knitting and crocheting, making an abundance of handcrafted garments for loved ones. She had a passion for coin collecting and had an extensive collection. Even during her illness, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as a perfect daughter and sister. A special thanks to Dr. Farokh Buhariwalla, her family physician, Dr. Ron MacCormick of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Dr. Anne Frances D’Intino of the An Cala palliative-care unit, and all the warm and caring staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the An Cala palliative-care unit. We thank you all for the beautiful care you gave our mom and our family. Visitation will take place at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Thursday, May 5, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, where she was a faithful parishioner, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6, Fr. Kenneth 'Ken' Carson LeBlanc Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: April 30th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Kenneth Carson LeBlanc, 63, on Saturday, Apr. 30, 2016 in North Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines, Ken was the son of the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Todd) LeBlanc. Ken had a passion for the water. He loved fishing, boating and this may have all stemmed from his working days as wheels man and a deck hand on the lake boats. He had excellent navigation and marine skills. He loved cooking, seafood was a favourite, tried any recipe that perked his interest even concocted his own, some were unsuccessful but he never stopped. He loved to read a lot and Farley Mowat was just one author he loved. He cut articles from the newspapers and showed them to others. He collected lighthouses and any nautical memorabilia. After working on the boats, Ken was employed with De Haviland Aircraft Company in Toronto painting aircrafts. He later moved to London, Ont., to pursue a career with Union Gas as a stationary engineer. While in London, he opened up his own company called Ken LeBlanc Technical maintenance. Ken’s heart was in Cape Breton, he sold his company and home in London to move back east to be with family and work his final years in Fort McMurray as foreman before retiring in September 2015. He was a member of Florence Legion. Ken touched many hearts in many special ways and always had a way of making things possible when everyone else thought it couldn’t happen. Ken is survived by his son, Kenny Jr. (Geneva); daughter, Theresa (Glen Murphy) Hickey and Megan Wanamaker; grandchildren, Megan, Matthew and Rylan; brothers, Jim (Shelia), Ralph (Pat MacLean) and Melvin (Debbie); brother in-law, Courtney George; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Ken was predeceased by his brothers, Matthew ‘Buddy’, Cameron ‘ Cammie’ and a sister, Helen Marie. As per Ken’s wishes, cremation has taken place and memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 5, 2016, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Fr. Patrick O’Neil officiating. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines. Donations in memory of Ken may be made to Sydney Mines Food Bank or charity of one’s choice. Mary Jo MacDonald Born In: Christmas Island Born: April 19th, 1940 Passed in: Inverness, Canada Passed on: May 2nd, 2016 Mary Jo MacDonald, age 76, passed away peacefully Monday, May 2, 2016, surrounded by loved ones at the Inverary Manor, Inverness. Mary Jo “Ma” was born April 19, 1940 on Christmas Island; she was the daughter of the late Cecilia and John Farrell. She was a loving mother and devoted wife. Mary Jo is survived by her husband, Malcolm A. MacDonald and 10 children, Sandi, Catherine (Dan), Karen (Joe), Malcolm Jr., Glen (Anne), Leonard (Elizabeth), Lesa (Chris), Kim (Ken), John (Lisa) and Dan and 17 grandchildren, Britney, Travis, Alex, Brandon, Janice, Charles, Cameron, Spencer, Tara, Olivia, Alexsandra, Emily, Caroline, Lauren, Kendra, Kennedy, and Chloe. Surviving siblings, Catherine, Dan, Johnny (Betty), Lenny (Anne), Anne Marie, Angie, Irene, Molly (Sander), Roddie (Gayle), Lexie and Phonsie (Mary). She was predeceased by her parents and sisters, Elizabeth and Peggy and brother, Neil. Mary Jo enjoyed baking, reading, singing, listening to music, and loved animals and nature. She was a wise woman of great strength, style, and elegance taught her children many invaluable lessons to be kind, to work hard, to love, to pray, to forgive and above all to laugh! She was loved and adored by her children and will be missed dearly by all including her “extended family” at the Inverary Manor. Resting in Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury with visitation Thursday, May 5th from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will offered Friday at 2 p.m. from St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, West Bay Road with Rev. William 'Calder' Campbell Born In: Birch Grove Passed in: Cornwall PEI Passed on: May 1st, 2016 William ‘Calder’ Campbell from Cornwall P.E.I. and born in Birch Grove, Cape Breton, passed away at the age 68 on May 1st, 2016 at the QEII in Halifax, NS. Predeceased by his father Ross Campbell; mother, Isabel Campbell and brother, Scott Campbell. Calder is survived by his wife, Eleanor Gallant; sons, Jarid Campbell (Amanda), Justin Campbell (Chantal Clapa); daughters, Stefanie Gallant (David Rumsey), Naomi Hartery (Rob), Jan Richards (Aaron) and his many grandchildren, Nash Campbell, Sydney Rumsey, Allison Rumsey, Bella Hartery, William Hartery and Hannah Richards. Brother of Ronnie (Clara) and Alexander. Calder loved his work at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital before relocating to Prince Edward Island where he worked at AgraWest, Cavendish Farms and the University of Prince Edward Island. He enjoyed a number of years working in Inuvik and also at the University of Calgary. Calder loved to cook, ride his Harley, and travel with his wife. He had many friends and would like them to think of him as riding into the sunset on his Harley.
