Born in Glace Bay, Mary was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Marsh) Vickers. Mary was employed in the laundry department at the old Glace Bay General Hospital. She was a devoted, compassionate and loving mother and grandmother. A quiet and private lady by nature, Mary enjoyed reading, knitting and spending time with her cat, Princess. Mary is survived by her two children, her daughter, Debbie (George) and her son, Ronald ‘Boo’ (Shirley); three beloved grandchildren, Brianna, Kristen, Jillian; three sisters, Joyce (Russell), Valerie (Gerard), Janie; brother, Gordie and her sister-in-law and best friend, Cecilia. Mary also took on the role of raising her nieces and nephews; whom she regarded as her own children, Theresa ‘Sparkles’, Marion and her two nephews, who have since passed on, Bruce and Tommy. Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Sonny Currie; three brothers, Tommy, Joey, Freddie; two sisters, Frances, Isabelle and her sister-in-law, Ruth Stevens. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 12 (noon) until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., all in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. We w Annie Victoria (Tighe) MacNeil Born: October 31st, 1920 Passed on: May 15th, 2016 It is with deep sympathy we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Annie Victoria (Tighe) MacNeil on May 15, 2016 at the Maple Hill Manor, formerly of New Victoria, at the age of 95. Annie was born on Oct. 31, 1920, the first child of the late Thomas and Catherine (Turnbull) Tighe. Annie was the beloved wife of the late George 'Pink' MacNeil. Left to mourn are son, Jimmy MacNeil; daughter, Bonnie (Don) Pretty; grandchildren, Irene Pretty-Monpetit, Kyle (Margaret Ann) MacNeil, Heidi MacNeil, Yorke MacNeil; great-grandchildren, Matthew Monpetit, Molly Muise, Adam Monpetit, Shae MacNeil, Teagan MacNeil and brother, Wallace Tighe. Annie was predeceased by her husband, George 'Pink' MacNeil; son, Maurice 'Tyke' MacNeil; grandson, Ivan Pretty; brothers, Joseph, Dempsey, Jackie, Mylie, Clarence and Obidia and Patrick in infancy; sisters, Ramona (Frank) Fahey, Emily (Jimmy) Fahey and daughter-in-law, Patricia MacNeil. In her earlier years Annie worked for the old New Waterford Hospital, Gaffins and the GI Plant. Annie was gifted with a big heart and big voice. She was a lady in the truest form of the word. Annie sang on CBC Radio every Saturday in her early years. She also attended and sang in many concerts across Cape Breton Island and met many friends along the way. There will be no visitation by Annie's request. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held on Thursday, May 19, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Victoria with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, New Waterford. John William 'Jackie' Carpenter Born In: New Waterford Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: May 15th, 2016 It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of Jackie Carpenter. Jackie passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the Glace Bay Hospital with his loving family at his side. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late John William and Beatrice Leann (Quinn) Carpenter. Jackie was a faithful member of the former St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan, and more recently the parish of St. Leonard, New Waterford. While a member of St. Michael’s parish, he was also a member of their men’s club. Jackie was employed for numerous years as a purchasing agent for our local hospitals, firstly at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital and years later he retired from the same position at the Sydney City Hospital. He enjoyed sports, especially hockey and baseball, and was an avid fan of both the Leafs and the Blue Jays. He was very witty, had a dry sense of humour, an excellent memory and loved a good conversation, especially if it concerned politics; he loved politics. He also enjoyed fiddle music and learned to play the fiddle himself; taking lessons from well known fiddler, Winnie Chafe. Jackie will be sadly missed by his loving family; daughter, Shauna; her mother, Dianne; and his only surviving sibling, Bernie (Jean). Jackie will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, James, Blaine; sisters, Evelyn Walsh, Mary C. ‘Mammie’ MacKinnon and Carmel MacDonald. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, May 18, 2016, from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley is Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard’s Church. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Following the interment, all are invited to a reception at the KOC, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, to meet with Jackie's family and continue celebrating his life. Germaine 'Tuddie' Bisson Born In: Sydney Born: October 25th, 1950 Passed on: May 14th, 2016 It is with a heavy heart that I announce the sudden passing of my sister, Tuddie, on May 14, 2016. Born in Sydney Oct. 25, 1950, she was a daughter of the late Jessie MacKinnon. Tuddie was a member of St. Leonard's Parish and was a very religious person. She worked at Midtown Villa and the French Club in New Waterford. She loved her dogs, especially her best friend 'Jake'. She was a very kind and considerate person. Tuddie is survived by her sister, Marie MacKinnon, New Victoria; Harold MacKinnon, Richmond, B.C.; close friends, Zelda Bushell, Janice O'Neill, Ricky and Tena Attwood. She was predeceased her husband, Raymond Bisson; Angus and Mabel MacKinnon; John R. Nandy; Hector and Bede MacKinnon. There will be no visitation or funeral service by request. Cremation has taken place with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Victoria, under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Lillian Mae (Parsons) Wadden Born In: Birch Grove Born: October 27th, 1921 Passed on: May 15th, 2016 With broken heart the family of Lillian announces her passing on May 15, 2016, with loving family at her side. Born in Birch Grove, Oct. 27, 1921, she resided in Donkin with her husband Joe where she raised her family. Left to mourn are daughter, Willena Warner and granddaughters, Pam & family and Karen & family; and daughter, Linda Sparrow and grandson Sandy and family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Joe; son, David; sons-in-law, George Warner and Philip Sparrow. She was the last surviving member of her family.
