Gillis - Katherine Farmakoulas - 92 yrs Shirley Carruthers - 84 yrs James Dale Greer MacKinnon - 35 yrs Otto Lawrence Strong Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: December 26th, 2015 Otto Strong, age 67 passed away on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015 at home. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Gordon and Rita (Boone) Strong. Otto was raised by his grandparents, Charlie and Hazel Strong. Otto was an oil burner technician and operated his own business since 1977. He was a hard working, compassionate man who loved hunting, fishing and going out in his boat. In his earlier years, he was an avid dart player. Otto is survived by his wife, Nancy (Green) Strong; three sons, Michael (Wanda), Kyle (Nicole), Aiden Buckland; three stepbrothers, Joey (Carrie), Vince (Anna), Steve (Marina) Simonetta; five grandchildren, Courtney, Nicole, Taylor, Regan, Connor and one great-granddaughter, Camrynn. He will be sadly missed by his hunting and fishing buddy, Jack Simms. Besides his parents, Otto was predeceased by his son, Gordon, daughter, April and his sister, Charmaine. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Salvation Army Lieutenants, Dennis and Mary Maybury officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. Gillis Born In: Sydney Passed on: December 27th, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear partner, son, brother uncle and friend, Barry Gillis, on Dec. 27, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a hard battle with a three-month illness. Born in Sydney, Barry was the son of Alice (Cooper) and the late Duncan Gillis. Barry attended Ashby School and graduated from Sydney Academy. He worked for many years in the restaurant business and at one time owned his own pizza shop. For the past 20 years he worked for the city as a crossing guard where he was well loved by the children. He also worked at the Family Resource Center. Barry was a kind and gentle man who had many friends and family who loved him. Barry is survived by his partner of 26 years Robert Morrison, mother Alice (Cooper), brothers Rick and Terry, of Sydney, sister Debbie (Paul) Rudderham, niece and nephew, Hannah and Kyle Rudderham, all of Point Edward. He is also survived by his extended family Don Morrison, Marie and Blair Hill, Gary, Ken (Darlene) Morrison, Bev and Wally Steel, Ontario, Stan (Deloris) Morrison, New Brunswick, also many nieces and nephews, and his two wonderful friends, Marie Farr and Marina Ross. Barry was predeceased by his father Duncan Gillis, grandparents, Frank and Mary Cooper, John R. and Annie Gillis, also Dave Morrison. Barry will be missed by all who knew him and have many happy memories of him. Visitation for Barry will be held on Thursday, Dec., 31, 2015 from 12-2 p.m. at the S.W. Katherine Farmakoulas Born In: Greece Born: December 5th, 1923 Passed in: Dartmouth Passed on: December 26th, 2015 It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing away of our mother, Katherine (Xidos) Farmakoulas, age 92, of Glace Bay, N.S. on Dec. 26, 2015 in Dartmouth, N.S. Our mother was the matriarch of not only our family but also of the Cape Breton Greek Orthodox Community which she loved and served with all her heart. We will miss her dearly. Katherine was born in Siros, Cyclades, Greece to Irene (Vihos) and John Xidos on Dec. 5, 1923. She grew up on her beloved island Milos and enjoyed her summers in Klima. She completed her high school education in Piraeus, Greece where she received high honours and academic recognition for her achievements. In 1940, Katherine left Greece and came to the booming coal mining town of Glace Bay. She continued to educate herself while working in the family business, Empire Shoe Rebuilders. She married John Farmakoulas and raised three children. Although she was not able to continue a formal education, she was a lifelong learner and a self-educated woman that continued to correct the grammar and mathematical errors of her educated children. In 1961 a tragic accident took the lives of many important people in her life, including her husband and brother. Katherine and her sister-in-law Helen assumed the responsibility of running the family business, Koolex Kleaners. Later, she opened her own gift store, Gifts Galore, which became a meeting place for coffee and conversation. She took on a leadership role in the Cape Breton Greek Community and was the president for the past 50 years. Her selfless love and dedication to culture, tradition and religion was the anchor of the Greek Community. Family and friends were the most important things in Katherine’s life. The kitchen at 134 South St. was always ready with hot coffee and Greek sweets for all who dropped in. Katherine’s specialty was cooking and baking. Leaving her home with an empty stomach was not an option. Her sense of humour kept our spirits high and her advice guided us to the very end. She had a Greek saying for every situation that began with, “There’s a Greek saying that says ...” On this very special Christmas day, she continuously repeated how lucky she was to be surrounded by her family. Katherine is survived by her three daughters, Irene (Louis) Angelopoulos, Eva Farmakoulas, Gloria Farmakoulas; sister Laodiki (Gerry) Lutwick; sisters-in-law, Helen Xidos and Irini Papaiouannou; brother-in-law James (Mary) Farmakoulas; grandchildren, Yanna (George) Theoharopoulos, Stefani (Konstantinos) Angelopoulos, John-Paul Angelopoulos, and her namesake, the love of her life, Katerina McInnis; great-grandchildren, Xenia, Irini and Kyrkos Theoharopoulos, Leonidas Manos; nieces and nephews Cleo (Sean) Xidos, John Xidos, Renee (Glenn) Lutwick, Emmanuel Lutwick, John (Evangeline) Lutwick, Michael (Mireille) Lutwick, John Farmakoulas, Andrew Farmakoulas, Christina (Randy) Walker, Xenia (John) Tsavos, Evi (Thomas) Papaiouannou and George (Uli) Papaiouannou; many other great nieces and nephews; and her 'adopted' son and soulmate Mike Dezagiacomo. Shirley Carruthers Born In: Sydney Mines Born: November 25th, 1931 Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: December 27th, 2015 After a brief illness, Shirley Carruthers, surrounded by her children, passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2015 at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Sydney Mines on Nov. 25, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Olive (MacKeigan) Pickles. Shirley was predeceased by her loving and adoring husband of 44 years, Richard 'Dick' Dickson Carruthers. Shirley was a loving and nurturing mother to her daughters Heather and Linda, and sons Wayne and Russell. She will be sadly missed by her family, her friends and the staff and residents at the guest home where she resided. Shirley is survived by her daughter Heather (Hugh) Browning, Merigomish; sons, Wayne (John Weston), Prince Edward County, Ontario, and Russell (Pam) Carruthers, Lower Sackville. Shirley was a devoted Nanny to her granddaughters Erin Browning (Jason Visneskie), Ottawa, Sarah and Claire Carruthers, Lower Sackville. She celebrated her 84th birthday with her family and a surprise visit from her first great-granddaughter, Callie Rose Visneskie. Also survived by brother, James (Shirley) Pickles; sister, Anna (James) O’Handley; sister-in-law, Margaret Marks; several nieces and nephews, and best friend of 70 years, Anne Jenkins. A place he very much loved and where he spent much of his childhood and also any opportunity to make it back for 'home' for vacations in Mira. Born in Glace Bay, Dale moved to Ontario with his mother in 1986. There he formulated such long lasting strong friendships they regarded him as family. 'Brother.' These bonds can never be broken. Dale was a graduate from Conestoga College, Kitchener, Ont. and became the Director of Talent for Bay Street Staffing, Toronto. His positive personality, kind and sensitive nature, quit wit, joy of life and the overall man he became, was an asset to all who knew him. His messages of those many grieving his loss are plenty and deeply heartfelt. He was well loved and highly respected. Dale was an athlete, he enjoyed all sports, baseball, hockey, football, volleyball, etc. and was a member of many teams. He looked forward to the "juniors" at Christmas to watch with 'The Big Guy' his stepfather Gerry whom he loved and thought so highly of. Just hours before his tragic departure he purchased them both matching sweatshirts for this year's game. There was one year where we were not together at Christmas and so he volunteered at the Kitchener Soup Kitchen. Not unusual as he had often arranged different fundraisers for different charities. He enjoyed playing the guitar, spending times with friends, living downtown Toronto and his beloved pets. Dale is the son of Diana (MacKinnon) and stepson of Gerry Furlong. He is survived by his step family; the children of Gerry Furlong namely Helene, Gerry Jr., Bradley, all in Ontario; his other 'brother', Dave, Newfoundland and their children. Dale is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Greer; aunt Carolyn (Bill) Snow; uncles, Jimmy, Billy (Bev), Sandy (Jerry); several cousins and his fur babies, Charlie and Hemingway. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will take place 3 p.m., Dec. 30, 2015 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow.
