Vince passed away with his loving family by his side on Saturday, June 11th, 2016, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Alfred and Mary Turner and was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. Vince worked for Devco for 26 years, retiring in 1992. Vince was a very devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His greatest joys in life were times spent with his family; he was a true family man. He was a very kind and compassionate man, whose favorite thing to do was to make people laugh with his jokes and storytelling. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 51 years Dorothy M. (Yates) Turner; his girls, Marie (John) David, Angela (Brian) MacDonald, Donna (Jim) Southwell; his grandchildren Jonathan, Lyndsey, Stephanie, Mandy, Jenna, and Tyler; his great grandchildren; Kayla, Jayson, and Jacob; as well as a very special part of his life, his dog, Tessa. He will also be sadly missed by his sister Kathleen (Tim) Donovan; his brother Stephen, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother Alfred; sister Mary Thiel; father in law and mother in law, Jim and Nellie Yates; and his buddies Ivan Warren and Harold MacDonald. As per Vince's wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will be at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Born April 4, 1929 in Rear Boisdale, he was the oldest son of the late Mary MacLean (MacNeil). Dad retired from Municipal Ready Mix in Sydney where he worked as a labourer. Dad had many interests. He was a Gaelic speaker, fiddler and a dancer. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and spending time with his family and friends, especially the Labour Day Party on the Hill. He was a member of the Frenchvale Seniors Club and the Boisdale Volunteer Fire Department. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Carmella (Currie) MacLean, sons Joe (Sheila), Boisdale, Michael (Pam), Langley, B.C., Douglas, Boisdale, Edward (Alana), Coxheath; daughters Christine (Carl) Murphy, Leduc, Alberta, Karen (Tim) Jessome, Florence and Juanita (Ronnie) Ivey, Boisdale; by his grandchildren Vanessa, Justin, Michael, Cody, Brooke, Liam, John, Alan, Vanessa, Darien and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Jimmy (Ann), North Sydney, John Malcolm (Eva), Howie Centre, sisters-in-law Ann Marie MacNeil, Cassie Walker, brother-in-law Michael MacCuish and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Mary, his stepfather John MacNeil and his brothers Kenny and Rannie. We would like to give special thanks to Dr. John Kirkpatrick and Nursing staff of 5 East and 4 West at the Northside General hospital along with the staff of palliative care. Visitation for Joe will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at St. Andrew Church in Boisdale. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew Church with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Rest in Peace – De`an ta`mh ann am fois Rita Germaine Stevenson Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: June 10th, 2016 It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beautiful sister, Rita Germaine Stevenson, age 81 of Glace Bay on Friday, June 10, 2016 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Germaine was the daughter of the late John and Mary Jane (Coleman) Currie. Germaine worked at Household Finance. She loved to travel with her husband, Donnie Stevenson. Germaine enjoyed her bungalow in Mira where she entertained family and friends. She also enjoyed walking and skating. We take comfort in knowing Germaine had a wonderful and comfortable life. She is survived by her three sisters, Anne (Bernie) O’Laney, Bernice Steele, Ursula (Greg) O’Brien and many nieces, nephews and friends. Germaine was predeceased by her husband, Donnie, sister, Margie Kelly and her brother, Johnny Currie. Following Germaine’s wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A celebration of her life will take place on Tuesday with a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church followed by a reception in the church foyer. Fr. Leo Boone will officiate. Interment will be held in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. We would like to extend sincere thanks for the amazing care Germaine received from the New Waterford Hospital during her illness. The nurses on the 2nd floor were wonderful to her and her family. A special thank you to Germaine’s neighbours, Joe and Mary. Mary Ruth (Hamilton) Mercer Passed in: Sydney On Friday, June 10, 2016, we lost a beautiful mother who was a fun, kind woman, loved to laugh and in her day, to dance, especially the limbo. Mom was the daughter to the late William and Emily Rose ‘Doll’ Hamilton. She is survived by her four children, Lois (Paul) King, Les (Linda), Sandy (Valerie), Dorothy (Dave) Confiant; daughter-in-law Margaret Mercer; grandchildren, Rob, Mike Sandra, Les Jr., Leah, Ashley, Jordan, Whitney, Bryden, Darren, Dana and Lauren and many great-grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her husband ‘Bud’ Walter Mercer, her first husband Buster MacFadden, son John and daughter-in-law Sally and sisters Viola Moore, Hazel DeYoung, Eileen Ferris, brothers Thomas, Theadore, Johnny and Walter in infancy. Mom was employed at the State Street Bank in Boston and finished her career at the City Hospital with her buddy Helen Wadden. She enjoyed many days on Union Street, barbecues, and hanging out with ‘The Step Sisters’ who loved mom very much. Mom resided at the MacGillivray Guest Home for the last six years. Thanks to the kitchen staff where she enjoyed all her meals, laundry and housekeeping who enjoyed many laughs with mom. Recreation, nurses and CCAs who took such great care of her and appreciated mom’s sense of humour. She was loved by all of these fantastic group of friends. Thanks to Father Lloyd Dwyer for Mom’s final farewell service at the home and also all the residents and management. Mom was a great mother and we will certainly miss her kind smile. Visitation will be held Monday June 13, 2016 7-9 p.m., and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday in Sydney Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment will take place at Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association.
