Murrant - 77 yrs Susan Syms-MacNeil Halifax, NS / Reserve Mines, CB It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan C. Syms-MacNeil (Smith) at the QEII Health Sciences Centre after a brief illness. Born on July 15, 1934, in Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia, she was predeceased by her parents, Loretta (MacLean) and John Allan Smith; husbands, William J. Syms and Cal MacNeil; and siblings, Herbie, Maidie Addicott, Arnold, Sheldon and Anne Wood. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Lorne and Neila Smith (Glace Bay); children Darrell (Lingan), Michele (Halifax), Dwight (Guelph), Shaun (Sydney) and Scott (Halifax); grandchildren, Matthew, Luke, Joshua, Benjamin, Molly, Stephen, Thomas and Alianor; and many greatgrandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of the QEII Health Sciences Centre for their compassionate care. At Susie’s request, her remains have been donated to Dalhousie University. A memorial service will be conducted in Cape Breton in early August. Donations can be made in Susie’s memory to Feed Nova Scotia Sister Mildred Campbell Born In: Sydney Passed in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: June 28th, 2016 Sister Mildred Campbell, formerly Sister Mary Denis, 89, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, N.S., died at Bethany, the Motherhouse on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, in the 57th year of her religious life. Born in Sydney, N.S., she was the fourth oldest in a family of seven children born to Daniel William and Eunice Sarah (MacPherson) Campbell. Prior to entering the Sisters of St. Martha in 1949, Sister Mildred graduated from New Waterford General Hospital’s School of Nursing and received her R.N. certification. She worked in several areas of nursing in Sydney, N.S. and in several hospitals in U.S.A. In 1956 she received her Nursing Registration in Massachusetts. In 1957, Sister did her Nursing Surgical Residency and Infection Control at Boston University School of Medicine. Sister Mildred entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1957. She pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1959 and her perpetual commitment of vows on August 15, 1964. She re-entered the nursing field after a short refresher and ministered in Antigonish, N.S. at Bethany, R.K. MacDonald Guest House, St. Martha’s Convent on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University and at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish. As well, she served in Nova Scotia at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, St. Rita Hospital in Sydney and Eastern Memorial Hospital in Canso. In 1969, Sister Mildred went to St. John’s Hospital in Lowell, MA and served there for 10 years. Ever faithful to prayer and the nursing ministry, she engaged herself in preparing to follow-up more directly with the sick and dying. While in Lowell, Sister Mildred did part-time study in Clinical Pastoral Education at Newton-Andover Massachusetts and at Lowell University. She received certification, and served in Pastoral Care at St. Rita Hospital and Cape Breton Manor in Sydney, St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta., and Bethany’s Extended Care Unit in Antigonish, N.S. Sister Mildred was the local group leader in four of the communities of sisters in which she lived. Because of failing health, Sister returned to Bethany in the year 2000. Besides her parents, Sister Mildred was predeceased by brothers, Donald, Rev. Cyril, OMI, and Rev. Dennis M. She is survived by one sister, Carmella Murphy and one brother, Clayton. The remains will be resting at Bethany beginning (today) Wednesday, June 29th at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, June 30th at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home of Antigonish. George Winston MacNeil Born In: Reserve Mines Born: October 22nd, 1937 Passed in: Marion Bridge Passed on: June 27th, 2016 We, the family of George Winston MacNeil, regret to announce his passing on Monday, June 27, 2016, at home, surrounded by his wife and family. Born Oct. 22, 1937, in Reserve Mines, George was a son of the late George and Mabel (MacLeod) MacNeil. Until 1994, he lived in Glace Bay, before moving to Marion Bridge for the last 22 years. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his brothers, Connie and Sandy. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Annette ‘Nan’ (Murrant); sons, Tom (Donna) and Sandy (Margaret); brothers, Lawrence (Shirley) and Eric (Kay). Papa will be missed by his grandchildren, Mitch, Alexis, George and Mabel. George was very involved in Gordon United Church, serving as Clerk of Session and an Elder. He worked as a truck driver, before getting a position with DEVCO, retiring in 1994. An avid boater and snowmobiler, George was the last surviving original member of the Eastern Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club, in which he had many happy days. After retirement, George and Nan enjoyed traveling, as well as visiting their grandchildren and friends. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at MacLeod Point Cemetery, Marion Bridge on Thursday 2 p.m., with Martha MacDonald officiating. Murrant, 77 of Taunton, Massacusetts passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015 at Morton Hospital. She was the wife of the late James Gilbert Murrant. Born on April 26, 1938, in Springhill, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Donald H. and Olive (MacBerry) MacLeod. Ruth was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College and taught for a few years on a US radar base in Canada. Ruth and her family immigrated to the United States in 1969 and settled in Attleboro. In addition to raising her family, Ruth worked in the family run Clansman Restaurant and Catering business then later on as a manager for local group homes, caring for the mentally disabled. She was a world traveler and loved to read, quilt, knit and cherished the time she spent with her family. She was the sister of the late Shirley Livingstone and Ian MacLeod A memorial service and burial of her ashes will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Saint Lukes Anglican Church, Donkin Highway, Port Caledonia.
