Wendell Eddy Born In: Sydney Born: January 23rd, 1965 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 6th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Wendell on Monday, June 6, 2016. Born Jan. 23, 1965, in Sydney, N.S., to Anna (Campbell) Eddy, Upper Tantallon and the late Arnold E. Eddy. Wendell spent his early childhood in Ashby before moving with his family to Labrador City, returning to Sydney in 1983. Wendell’s first love was his horses. He spent every minute in and around ‘The Track’. Horsemen respected Wendell and the fine race horses he trained and groomed. W.J. will not be forgotten by the many horsemen at Tartan Downs and the Northside Race Tracks. A lover of sports, Wendell was a loyal follower of the Screaming Eagles. His gift for telling stories kept others entertained and enlightened to his passion and pride for all that he loved. Like his Dad, he loved to hunt and spend time ‘in the woods’ enjoying nature and all the new life emerging that it has to offer. He was a wonderful landscaper who took great pride in a beautiful garden. Wendell will be remembered by the hundreds of students he met through his 25+ years with the CBVRSB. Whether installing video surveillance computer equipment or ‘mopping up’, he was loved and respected by the many students and staff he encountered over the years. Wendell is survived by sisters Murdena (Mike) Kolanko, Big Pond, Ruthanne Geddes, Sydney River, Elaine (Donnie) Swartz ,Coxheath, Cathy (Rev. Eugene) Fisher, Sussex, Valda (Tom) Walsh, Upper Tantallon,; brothers Bucky (Joanie), Sydney, Dr. Brian, Corner Brook, Gerard (Sonya), Liverpool; nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. His pride and joy were his godchildren: twins Haley Ann and James Eddy and Brittney Cox. He was predeceased by nephews Ben Geddes and McCormack Isaiah Long (in infancy), and his brother-in-law, Robert Geddes. Visitation for Wendell Eddy will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, June 10 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Johanna Patricia Hamper Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 7th, 2016 Johanna Patricia Hamper, 61, of Sydney, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Herald Gilbert and Maatje ‘Marge, Marsha’ Hamper. Patricia attended the Truro Training School and upon returning home worked for many years at the Horizon Achievement Centre in Sydney. She was a faithful member of St. Marks Anglican Church in Coxheath and in recent years was a member of the Anglican Church of Christ the King in Sydney. Patricia’s special talent was her beautiful voice and she was a faithful member of the church choir for many years. She enjoyed an active social life and loved listening to music and singing along with it. She is survived by her cousins, Anke (Bas) Both, Meddelbury, Holland; Denise Sibley, Sydney; Nellie (Roland) Ball, Sydney; Jim (Leona) Hamper, Sydney; Frank Hamper, Plainfield, Ont.; Ann Watson, Kentville; Jean (Carl) Anthony, Brampton, Ont. and several other cousins. Patricia was predeceased by her parents. Visitation for Patricia Hamper will take place on Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at The Church of Christ The King with Rev. Reg. MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place in St. Marks Cemetery Coxheath. Jermina 'Mema' McKenzie Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Reserve Mines Passed on: June 7th, 2016 It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother Jermina ‘Mema’ McKenzie, on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Margaret (MacDonald) and Murray Gallant. She was retired from the Children’s Training Center where she worked in the laundry. She enjoyed knitting and sewing and going to flea markets and the odd bingo game. She is survived by her children Peggy (Tom) Foley, Bridgetown, Agnes McKenzie (Gill) Sydney, Arthur Jr., Port Hawkesbury, Bernie (Dorothy), Sydney, Doug (Jody), Windsor and Georgina, Sydney; daughter-in-law Marion and son-in-law Terry Lee; 14 grandchildren;16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Arthur, son Michael daughter, Anna Lee, grandson, Terrence Lee Jr; great-grandson, Thomas Patrick Bennett. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, June 10, 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. The funeral service will be celebrated Saturday, June 11, 10 a.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Burial at a later date in the parish cemetery. Francis 'Frank' Phillip Nearing Born In: Glace Bay Born: March 30th, 1949 Passed in: Nanaimo British Columbia Passed on: May 24th, 2016 Frank was born March 30, 1949, in Glace Bay to the late Joseph and Matilda (Milley) Nearing. He worked as a truck driver for over 35 years before that as a heavy duty mechanic in such places as Mahatta River, Prince George, and Naniamo, passed away May 24, 2016, in the Naniamo General Hospital. He leaves behind his son Philip (Shar); daughter Brenda (Andrew) and two granddaughters Jasmine and Kieria, along with brothers George, Joseph, James, Kevin and Wayne and sisters Florence, Pauline, Paula, Eva, Matilda, Corinne and many nieces and nephews. Frank was also predeceased by brothers Thomas and John and sisters Bridget in infancy and Mary. Cremation has taken place with a private spreading of ashes at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Frank’s memory to the Naniamo General Hospital. It’s time to find peace dad, Philip and Brenda. Michael Fenton McPhee Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 6th, 2016 With sadness, we announce the passing of Michael Fenton McPhee, aged 75, peacefully with family while under the care of Harbourstone Enhanced Care on June 6, 2016. Mickey was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and had retired from Nova Scotia Power in 2005. Mickey is predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Veronica (Petrie), his brothers: Joseph (Margie), Lawrence (Mary (Sis)), Charles W., and Billy (Mary), and his sisters: Mary (Adrian) and Theresa (Harry). Mickey will be missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11 a.m., Immaculate Conception Church (Bridgeport), Rev. Lawrence 'Deedum' Marshall Passed in: Eskasoni Passed on: June 6th, 2016 We regret to announce the passing of our dear father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, Lawrence Stephen ‘Deedum’ Marshall Sr. on Monday, June 6, 2016 at the Palliative Care Unit, C.B. Regional Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was the son of the late Stephen and Helena (Herney) Marshall. Lawrence ‘Deedum’ is survived by his sons, Lawrence Jr. and Perry (Katrina) of Eskasoni, Troy Michael and Vincent Sylliboy, Indian Brook First Nation and his daughters, Dorothy (Mick), Dorianna, Roselena, Elizabeth Gould (Mike), Nora Marshall, all of Eskasoni and mother of his children Cora Dennis, Edwardsville. He is survived by 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Michael S. and Leo S. (Judy), both of Eskasoni; numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. ‘Deedum’ was predeceased by two sisters Mary Jane Marshall and Nora Sack and by five brothers Roderick, Bernard, John, Wilfred and Leonard. Mr. Marshall will be resting at his daughter Dorothy Marshall’s residence, 4 Sunrise Drive Beach Rd., Eskasoni after 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 13 at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery at a later date. Beverly Elaine (MacLeod) Daley Born In: Reserve Mines Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: June 6th, 2016 Beverly passed away on June 6, 2016, at home with loving family by her side. Born in Glace Bay to the late William and Ann (Dean)MacLeod. Surviving are her loving husband of 50 years, Melvin Daley; children, Annette Daley-Smith (George Smith), Melva Daley-Smith (David Smith) and Dawn MacDougall (Cameron); grandchildren, Crystal, AJ, Aaron, Jessica, James, Sarah and Eric; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Dolly (Ron), Ann and Helen; brother Donald (Marilyn); sisters-in-law Marion, Anna and Mary. Besides her parents Beverly was predeceased by her brothers, Dossie, Eric, Barry and James Howard, in-laws Danny Lewis and Richard King. Beverly worked for H&R Block for 25 plus years. After retirement, she enjoyed dancing, playing cards, watching TV and spending time with her family. Cremation will take place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home. There will be visitation on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 12-2 p.m. with funeral service at 2 p.m. on Friday in Patten Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Allan MacLellan officiating.
