Sampson - 94 yrs John Greg MacDougall - Leona (Sutherland) Carroll - 90 yrs Cory Alexander Redmond - 37 yrs John Alexander 'Sandy' MacDonald Born In: Doiminion Born: August 24th, 1947 Passed in: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Passed on: June 14th, 2016 John Alexander MacDonald born in Dominion Aug. 24, 1947, died June 14, 2016 in Hamilton, Ont. Sandy was the son of the late Alec and Kay MacDonald. Surviving are loving wife, Tammy Sinclair and sons, Dennis Edmonton Alta., Gordon, Halifax N.S. and four grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Francis, Alexis and Mary; brothers, Michael, Greg and Bernie. Predeceased by brother, Jimmy. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Francis A. 'Frank' McCormick Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: June 19th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Frank McCormick, age 89 of the Hub, Glace Bay as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Frank passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the QEII Hospital, Halifax, with his family by his side. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Bernard and Mary (Rose) McCormick. Frank worked for several years at Imperial Leaf Tobacco Company, Aylmer, Ont.. He was a devoted member of the Hub Club. Frank also enjoyed watching hockey and playing cards. Frank is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Vaughan, London, Ont.; two sisters, Bernadette ‘Burnette’ MacDonald, Glace Bay, Delores Shaw, Alberta; one brother, Austin McCormick, Glace Bay; grandchild, Alicia Vaughan, London, Ont. and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Frank was predeceased by a brother, Joseph; sister-in-law, Mary McCormick; brother-in-law, Jim MacDonald and a niece, Gloria Pyke. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 27 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church followed by interment in St. John’s Cemetery, Glace Bay. Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Frances (Johnston) Hillier Born In: North Sydney Born: July 6th, 1926 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 20th, 2016 It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, sister-in-law, aunt and great-aunt, Frances (Johnston) Hillier, age 89, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 20, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in North Sydney on July 6, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James and Carrie (Newman) Johnston. Frances had a wonderful long life with great friends and family. She was a very kind, compassionate lady who was always there to listen. She really enjoyed even the simple things in life. One of her favourites was making a pot of tea so you could have a cup with her and talk about your day. Left to mourn her loss are her brothers, Nelson (Celesta) Johnston, Walter (June) Johnston and sister-in-law, Yvonne Johnston. She also leaves behind numerous wonderful nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her wonderful husband, George Hillier; her brothers, William, Ronald, Percy and sisters, Marie Steele (Johnny), Queenie Crosby (Ron) and an infant sister, Genevieve. Frances has requested a private family visitation and funeral service that will be held at a later date. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines on Dec. 14, 1948, he was the son of the late Robert B. and Margaret Ann (MacKay) Smith. A complete obituary and funeral announcement will appear in the Post at a later date. Joseph Harvey Gillis Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 20th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, companion and friend, Joseph Harvey Gillis, age 77. Joe passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Monday, June 20, 2016, in the Palliative Care Unit, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Francis X. and Mary (Petrie) Gillis. Dad was a member of the former St. Anthony’s parish and more recently St. Anne’s, both in Glace Bay. Joe worked at the Heavy Water Plant, the town of Glace Bay and was a very active member of Branch 3 Legion, Glace Bay. He loved lobster fishing and just sitting out spending time with the pride of his life; his family and friends. Joe will be forever remembered by his family and friends as a very gentle man. Dad will be forever missed by his loving children: son, Joey (Lynn), Calgary; daughters, Marlene (Keith) Pinkerton, Greenwood; Hilda (Leonard) Strong, Glace Bay; and his “Baby Girl”, Tracey (Duane) Gillis-May, Winnipeg. A wonderful Papa, he will be sadly missed by his cherished grandchildren, Kristina, Tyler, Danielle, Kelly, Trevor, Cody, Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Mia, Addison, Thomas, Avery, Lia and Morgan, Joe is also survived by a brother, Steven; companion, Karen Nolan; two special friends, Chickie Slade, Ronnie MacDougall; the mother of his four children, Jean Gillis; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by brothers, Gilbert and Charlie and a sister, Genevieve and granddaughter, Jessica Strong, both in infancy. Visitation will be held Friday, June 24th, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Leo Boone will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25th, in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. All are invited to join with Joe’s family for a celebration of his life on Saturday evening at 6 p.m., in the common-room, at the Paradise Complex, 86 Nolan’s Lane, Glace Bay. Family flowers only. Memorial donations in Dad's memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County. Members of the legion are asked to meet at the church early Saturday morning to form an honour guard for their fallen member.
