Sandy was born in Glace Bay, Oct. 25, 1941, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Winona (Matheson) Hillier. He worked for a number of years at Woolco and later as a corrections officer at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre, until his retirement. Sandy was an active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, serving as church warden, lay reader, youth group leader and Sunday School teacher, he was a member of the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge and the Cape Breton Shriners. He was a past chairman and member of the Cape Breton Regional School Board and Northside School Board Association, past 1st vice president of the Nova Scotia School Board Association and served on the Board of Directors for the Northside Community Guest Home. Sandy’s favourite pastimes were biking, swimming, dancing, skating, golf and gardening. Sandy is survived by his best friend and loving wife Mary (LaFosse), daughters Shauna (David) Snow, North Sydney, Tonya Hillier (Ross Krill), Calgary, five grandchildren Makayla and Kiana Snow, Ian, Ryan and Sophia Krill, his brothers and sisters Carrie (Donnie) Donovan, River Denys, Bob (Sandra) Hillier, Antigonish, David (Linda) Hillier, Muriel (Blaine) Kelloway, Terry (Deana) Hillier, all of Glace Bay, and by his mother-in-law Helena LaFosse, brother-in-law Guy LaFosse, Coxheath, sister-in-law Sheila LaFosse, Ontario and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Sandy was predeceased by his father-in-law Edgar LaFosse, brother-in-law Edgar LaFosse and sister-in-law Heather LaFosse. Sandy’s family extend a special thank you to Dr. Bill MacDonald and the staff on the 4th floor Palliative Care Unit at the Northside General Hospital for all of their care and support. Visitation for Sandy will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney with Rev Julio Martin officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Ernest William 'Ernie' Parsons Born In: Louisbourg Passed on: June 24th, 2016 It is with broken hearts that we the family announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Ernest ‘Ernie’ William Parsons, 64, passed away peacefully Friday, June 24, 2016 surrounded by his family. Ernie was born in Louisbourg to parents Robert and Bridget (Williams) Parsons. Ernie is survived by his wife Lorraine (Mosher); daughters, Michelle, Christine and Madeleine; sons-in-law, Jimmy de Vries and Rodney MacKeigan and his grandchildren Zachary and Hannah MacKeigan and Emily de Vries who were his pride and joy; sisters, Alice Divito, Georgina Lahey, Roberta (Herman) Wadden, and brother-in-law Roy (Ronna) Mosher as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and Vesta. In addition to his parents Ernie was predeceased by brother Michael and brothers-in-law Tony Divito and Clem Lahey. Ernie was a Red Seal Carpenter which took him to many parts of Canada. He worked for Parks Canada in Banff for a number of years before returning home in 1989 when he established E.W. Parsons Construction. In 1993 he opened Mariner Hardware and Building Supplies Ltd. In 1999, with partners, he opened the Lobster Kettle Restaurant and the following year the Louisbourg Marine Museum He was also instrumental in establishing the Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail. In most recent years Ernie was employed in Nunavut where he enjoyed the work, the people and the culture. Wherever he worked he made life-long friends. Ernie had a great spirit of adventure and loved to travel. His special interests included curling, local history, western movies and he was a music buff. Ernie had great pride in his family, loved them very deeply treasuring every minute of his time with them. In keeping with Ernie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Sarah Ann (MacLeod) Corbett Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: June 24th, 2016 It is with sadness, that we the family, announce the passing of Sarah Ann Corbett (MacLeod), age 88 of New Waterford on Friday, June 24, 2016 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Mary Jo (Groves) MacLeod. Sarah enjoyed playing bingo, poker, watching old movies, reading and sitting outside on the swing or in her rocking chair. Most of all she loved being surrounded by her family and friends. Surviving are her son, Richard; daughters, Linda, Gale and the youngest, Diane; sisters, Catherine MacLeod and Geraldine Burns. Sarah will be sadly missed by her 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, Sarah was predeceased by her husband, John Corbett in 1980, daughters, Ann Lewis, Lorraine MacNeil, son, Joseph Corbett and her brother, Tommy MacLeod. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 30 from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Deacon Leo Penny officiating. I’ll see you again This is not where it ends I will carry you with me Until I see you again Doris (Howell) Gauthier Sampson Born In: Carbonear Newfoundland Born: December 11th, 1923 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 24th, 2016 Doris went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on St. Jean Baptiste Day, Friday, June 24, 2016, through trials, tribulations and chronic pain, she is free at last. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Ann Mariah (Clarke) Howell of Carbonear, Newfoundland. Doris was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born Dec. 11, 1923, she moved to Montreal in 1947, worked as secretary and treasurer at the Young Womans Christian Assoc. Doris also worked at Steinberg’s Miracle Mart. She married in 1949, left Montreal in 1965, moving back to Carbonear, Newfoundland, and then settled in Sydney. Doris made a living, working as a cook for Bairncroft orphanage where she cooked for 36 people. She was employed at Ike’s Deli on Charlotte Street, where she made those delicious smoked meat sandwiches, she worked at Sobey’s, Prince Street, sold Avon, made home parties selling beautiful jewelry, later working at various tailor shops, then opening her own business making beautiful wedding ensembles, custom clothing, even ladies hats. Doris was a member of Faith Baptist Church, where she first met the love of her life Eugene Sampson in 1968, when he started attending. They married in May 1985 where they lived in their little “mansion on a hilltop”, South Bar, Cape Breton, until January 2013 when God called Eugene home. At Faith Baptist she enjoyed the fellowship of other believers, she sang in the choir, she loved entertaining, cooking, baking, knitting, writing poems and drawing. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband , Eugene Francis Sampson, who she has joined in Glory, her four year old son, Ivan Gauthier, three brothers, George, Fred and Ron Howell, three sisters-in-law, Stella Reid, Lena Richards, Dorothy (Mansfield) Downy. Doris says goodbye to her son Donald Gauthier, her grandson, who was her pride and joy, Phalen Ivan Gauthier, Eugene’s family, daughters, Sylvia (Wally) Jackson ,Marilyn Burke, Donna (Tom) Drover, sons, Jerry (Valerie) Sampson, Frankie and Donald Wayne, niece, Deborah Crittenden, nephew, Lorne Howell, two special cousins, Ruby Phalen and Joan Downton, dear friends especially Christy Tickner as well as her beloved cat Princess left in the care of Wilma Blois, with thanks. Thank you to the County homemakers for their support. A special thanks to the doctors, nurses and the caring staff of Harbourstone who took a special interest in Doris, Dr. Jeannie Ferguson and Dr. Ann Frances D’Intino who made mom’s last few days peaceful. Thank you also to Dr. Buhariwalla, family physician. Derrick Pinhorn, who kept the Sampson driveway always clear in those tough winter months. A special thank you to MLA Michel Samson who faithfully sent mom a Christmas card every year, and to extended family in Louisdale. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Doris’s memory to the Arthritis Society, Bone Density Clinic, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Praise FM Cape Breton Radio, SPCA/ Feral Cat Society or a charity of choice. At Doris’s request there will be no visitation. All are welcome to join the family for the graveside ceremony to take place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens with Pastor Rob Jones and Rev. Sheldon Chant committing Doris’s body to rest. A celebration service for Doris Sampson will be held at Faith Baptist Church, Davenport Road, Sydney, to be announced. Doris’s family will be eternally grateful for the care and compassion shown by the staff of Chant’s Funeral Home.
