She was in her 89th year. She was the only daughter of the late Sarah (MacDougall) Varley and John Henry Varley of Christmas Island, Cape Breton. It was in her childhood village of Christmas Island that she developed her tremendous compassion for people, strong religious conviction and her love of Celtic music and culture. She completed her high school education and continued on to earn her diploma in nursing from the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in North Sydney in 1949. In her early career she worked in Halifax and Winnipeg veteran hospitals returning to live in Westmount where she married and lived until recently. She worked in numerous hospitals in the area retiring from the Northside General Hospital. After her retirement she was very involved with her church, Holy Rosary parish in Westmount, as a member of the CWL and choir, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 126 in Westmount and volunteered with the VON Foot Clinic. But her real passion was to enjoy life and have fun. No one loved children or dogs more than she did. She was a fabulous cook and loved to bake the complicated recipes always sharing them with others. Family gatherings were her favourite pastime. She continued her love of dancing, music and concert going until she was no longer able. She also enjoyed walking her dog, any opportunity to swim (especially at Christmas Island or Shenacadie beach with family) and to bowl. “The Varleys”, who lived on the same street in Westmount and their offspring, benefited throughout their lives for her unselfish love of family. They remain forever grateful. She is survived by her son, Alexander ‘Sandy’ Chisholm (Karen Bonnell) as well as a nephew, Colin Varley (Patricia) and nieces, Suzanne Varley-Doyle (Brian), Clara MacDonald, Ann Varley-Forrest )Barry) and Marie Varley-MacKenzie (Keith) and grandnephews, Kyle, Liam and Stewart Varley and grandnieces, Jolene and Stephanie MacDonald and special friend, Doris Heading. She was predeceased by her husbands, Donald Chisholm and William MacDougall, her brother John Joseph ‘Joe’ Varley and his wife, Agnes Varley and their son, Allan Varley. A heartfelt thank you from her family is extended to the staff of The Cove for their care and compassion while she was a resident but especially in the last few days. Thank you as well to the staff of the Emergency Department and Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for ensuring she was well cared for during her short stay. Visitation for Mary will be held on Tuesday, June 14 2016 from 6-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, June 15 at 10 A.M. in Holy Rosary Church, Westmount with Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating. If you would like to offer a donation in Mary’s memory the charity suggested would be your local SPCA. Walter 'Edward' Doyle Born In: Black Point Born: February 7th, 1929 Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: June 11th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter ‘Edward’ Doyle on June 11, 2016, at the Northside Guest Home with his loving family at his side. He was the beloved husband of Nora, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. Born in Black Point on Feb. 7, 1929, Eddie was the eldest son of the late Walter and Josephine (Harrietha) Doyle. He and the love of his life, Nora, were married in 1949 and went on to raise 15 children together, along with a parade of foster children and families over the years. Charity began at home in the Doyle household. He first worked at Spooney’s Grocery and later Martin MacDonald’s Market before entering the mines where he worked until his retirement. In his day he was a well-known sportsman excelling at amateur boxing, baseball, hockey, and was a terror on the ringette ice. He was well respected as a hockey referee. Dad was well known for his backyard rink. Even after his family was grown, he continued to put in the rink for the neighbourhood kids. Even today complete strangers tell us how they loved that rink and Mr. and Mrs. Doyle. Anyone and everyone on the Northside who was in need for just about anything knew that a call to ‘Mr. Doyle’ would not be in vain. He was also a well known community volunteer and worked tirelessly with the St. Vincent de Paul and the Sydney Mines food bank. He is survived by his wife Nora (Young); children Martin (Sharon), Jo-Ellen Lyslo (Robert), Michael (Susan), Paul (Debbie), Dr. Mary (AJME), Teresa Lunn (Michael), Vincent (Lori), Bernie, Camilla, Eddy (Shauna), Angela Burton (Chris), Peter (Darlene), Andrew (Shauna) and daughter-in-law Donna (Townend). He dearly loved all of his 23 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Besides his parents, Edward was predeceased by his twin brother Jack, sisters Nellie (MacPhee), Lucy (Lamey), Medie (Boutlier), Monica (Ramsey), son Jack, daughter Mary Colleen, and daughter-in-law Janet (Power). He was such a man. The world has lost a “good one” with his passing! Visitation for Edward Dolye will be held on Tuesday, June 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church Sydney Mines with Fr. James Oliver officiating. In lieu of flowers donations in Edward’s memory may be made to Sydney Mines Food Bank or charity of one’s choice. The family sincerely thanks Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise for the many years of special care given to our father. Appreciation is also extended to Dr. Ignacio of Sydney Mines. We would also like to thank the dedicated and attentive staff at the Northside Guest Home, Miners Manor, and Harbourstone Enhanced Care. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com <http://www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com/>. Born on March 18, 1942, Jit was the son of late Angus and Cassie (Campbell) MacMullin. He was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport. Jit was always happy for the good weather that would allow him to get out on his scooter and socialize with everyone, which he loved to do. He lived with his niece Cathy (Facchin) Gillis, who was like a daughter to him, husband Bernie, and special grandniece Cassie, “his little girl.” Until he was injured, Jit worked at a number of occupations – grave digging, furniture delivery and construction. Besides a good conversation, Jit loved sports, especially hockey, baseball, curling and harness racing. He was a Toronto Maple Leaf fan and took great satisfaction in beating those Habs. And you could tell when he flashed that smile and started rubbing those hands together. Jit is survived by his loving sisters Pauline (Allie MacKinnon), Sydney, and Catherine (John Facchin), Dominion. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, Jane, Charlie, Patsy, Elizabeth, Francis, Joanne, Bryden and Michael; Marilyn and Barry; Angelo, Angus, Carmella, Johnny, Lisa, Cathy and Velda; Tammy, Scott and Andy. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, and will be missed by many good friends. Besides his parents, Jit was predeceased by his older sister Anna MacKinnon and younger brother Rankin. As he wished, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. The funeral mass for Jit will be held at Immaculate Conception, Bridgeport, on Tuesday, June 14, at 11 a.m. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Currie’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
