Born and raised in Whitney Pier, a community Alice was so proud of, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Alice (Walsh) Murphy. Alice worked for many years at the MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney. After her retirement, Alice continued to visit the residences of the home on a weekly basis. Alice was an avid skater throughout her entire life. She had been known to wear out a few pair of racer skates over the years. In 1959, Alice married Allan V. MacDonald and together they raised their children in Salmon River. There was never a day that would go by that mom did not have a fresh pan of biscuits on the table with a pot of tea on the stove. This always led to a wonderful conversation. Alice will be missed by all who knew her. Alice is survived by her only daughter, Stella (Brad) Webber and seven sons, Paul (Heather), Colin (Coreen), Jamie (Wendy), Sandy, Ronnie (Lori), Robert and Michael (Suzanne). Grandma is also survived by 18 grandchildren, Alicia, Jared, Jessie, Michelle, Candace, Joshua, Ashley, Evan, Cara, Lauren, Liam, Jeremy, Jessica, Jillian, Jenna, Reid, Madeline and Ewan; two great-grandchildren, Brooklynn and Chloe; as well as several nieces and nephews with whom she adored. Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by her husband, Allan V., siblings, John Pat, Leo, Francis (Evelyn), Tommy (Joyce), Mary and by her special niece, Patricia MacDonald. Visitation for the late Alice Mary MacDonald will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), on Friday, June 24, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Alice’s nephew, Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the mass, light refreshments will be held in the funeral home reception area. Burial will take place in St. Margaret’s Cemetery, Grand Mira. The family would like to give a big thank you to the caregivers, VON and palliative care staff for the love and care given to Alice during her time of need. Donations in memory of Alice may be made to the Whitney Boys and Girls Club of Cape Breton. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com. Margaret Mary Hamilton Born In: Mill Creek Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 21st, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret Mary Hamilton, age 92, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Mill Creek, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Jane (Jessome) Marsh. Margaret lost her husband Johnnie at a young age. She then devoted her life to raising their four young children aged five years and under on her own. She was kept busy cooking, cleaning and tending to the endless chores of running the family home she built after Johnnie’s death. Mom loved to bake, sew, quilt and tend her flower gardens. She loved to sing and dance with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved watching her favourite soap opera shows and spending all her free time with those she loved. The family remembers camping trips to Ingonish, Broad Cove and Margaree spent with her children and extended family members as well as trips to the beach or down to the shore in Millcreek, on picnics, on Sunday drives for ice cream, Sunday family dinners and regular visits with aunts, uncles and cousins. Mom loved spending time with all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren making each one feel they were special, unique and loved. Mom had the unique desire and ability to love unconditionally; to meet and accept people on their own terms. Mom’s love and caring extended beyond her family and friends; to the community she lived in and to St. Joseph parish in Bras d’Or where she was a devoted and lifetime member. She shared her gifts and talents at many parish functions especially as a longtime member of the CWL. Mom was a gentle, quiet and friendly person with high moral values and qualities. Her strength and love came from a heart nurtured by her strong faith in Jesus and her deep devotion to our blessed Mother Mary. Her deep prayer life of rosaries and novenas, fortified her for all the trial and struggles she would endure in daily life and also the joy and laughter of a life well lived. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Patricia Hamilton, Sydney Mines, Darlene (Alan) Gale, Mill Creek; two sons, John Lloyd (Nadine), Sydney Mines, Darrell (Lynn), Mill Creek; by her granddaughters, Alana (Matthew), Erika (Mike), Sara, Larissa, Natasha (Floyd), Tracy, Jillian; grandsons, Jason (Ashley), Aaron (Emily), Jordan (Allyssa), Colin (Jeanine), Austin (Morgan), Preston (Shelly); her great-granddaughters, Hannah, Chloe, Aveyah, Bellah, Peyton, Madison, Haley, Jayda, Elianah, Reagan, Morgan, Emma, Kenzie; her great-grandsons, Andrew, Ryan, Jax, Kalyx, Jace, Riley, Tristan; her two brothers, Melvin Marsh, St. Catharines, Ont., LeBaron ‘Bonnie’ Marsh, Waverly, N.S. and her brother-in-law, John Sandlock, Mill Creek, as well as many nieces and nephews.
