(Ling) Penney - Ann Bernick - Theresa Malanka Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: February 8th, 2016 It is with sadness, that we the family, announce the passing of Theresa Malanka. She passed away peacefully at the Northside Community Guest Home on Feb. 8, 2016, at the age of 95. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the Late Murdock James and Jauina (Haggett) MacLean. Theresa enjoyed a lifetime of travel and shopping. Her family were her pride and joy, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Theresa is survived by her children,Vivian, B.C., Carol (John), Georges River, son, John (Susan), Sydney Mines. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Daniel, daughter, Judith and son James. Funeral service and graveside committal for the late Theresa Malanka will be held at a later date. Marguerite 'Peggy' Sunderland Passed in: Westmount, Canada Passed on: February 12th, 2016 With both, heavy and loving hearts, the family of Peggy Sunderland announce her peaceful passing in the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 12, 2016, at the age of 94 years. The youngest child of Charles J. and Mary Jane (Tonnelier) Poneé, Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Roy, son, Vincent (Jane);three of her siblings, Jean Bonnell, Charles Poneé, and Blanche Donovan, son-in-law, Robert Thorpe. She is survived by her dear sisters, Lillian Sampson and Louise Black; children, Pam Thorpe, Sue, Jackie, Cheryl (Gordon) Card and Terry; daughter-in-law, Jane. She was a proud and loving Nana to 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Peggy lived most of her married life in Westmount in a home filled with hard work, faith, laughter and love. A terrific cook and homemaker, with expert sewing skills, she always made our home our safe haven and our lives richer. She was an active member of Holy Rosary parish and the CWL, school programs and her community. In more recent years, she lived in Parkland Cape Breton, where she continued an active lifestyle with family and friends. Spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was one of the greatest blessings in her life. Many happy family reunions – at home and cottages – centered around Nana Peggy sharing a game of cards, a jigsaw puzzle, a cookie and a hug! Thank you to Dr. Margaret Fraser, Dr. Peter Jackson, the staff of Parkland Cape Breton, Holy Rosary CWL, and the greater community of Sydney who have shared and supported Mom so well in her life’s journey. We were all blessed to have had her so very long in our lives. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday, Feb. 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, with Rev. Stephen Davis Marshall Born In: Maine Passed in: Eskasoni Passed on: February 8th, 2016 Stephen Davis Marshall, age 58 of 54 Horseshoe Drive, Eskasoni, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Maine, USA, he was the son of the late Abraham and Mary Jane (Marshall) Marshall. He was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Known as ‘Uncle Dad’ to the Joe family, Steve worked in construction and had a great passion of helping people in his community. He was honored to be part of the Mi’kmaw Grand Council for 40 years, beginning at the age of 18 as the carrier of Saint Anne in Potlotek. He later then took the role of becoming the bell ringer and taught his grandson Ekkian to continue his role someday. He was known as the ‘Horseshoe Champ’ and has won many titles in Atlantic Canada and was recognized and honored by the N.S. Hall of Fame. He was three-time Nova Scotia Men’s “A” Singles Champion and had many first place finishes “A” class throughout Nova Scotia in both singles and doubles. Even the street that he lived on was named after him, ‘Horseshoe Drive.’ He was a good man who loved to smile and joke around. He was lead usher for many years in his community church. Stephen took the pride of being the grandfather to his grandsons, especially to Ekkian (they had a special bond) and became his grandson’s number one fan in his sports. He is survived by his daughter Selena Marshall-Cremo (Malcolm), Eskasoni and grandsons Ekkian and Ma’lkm; godchildren, Sue Ann Dennis, Levi Nicholas, Mary I. Joe, Angel Theresa Fortune, Austan Johnson, Lawrence Paul, Peter Paul; brothers, Joe, Patrick, Noel (Ginger), Albert ‘Uncle’, Shane; sisters, Mary Catherine ‘Auntie’, Marie ‘Jai’; uncles, Mike, Leo and Lawrence Marshall, also by his sister-in-law ‘Joe’aq, nieces, nephews and his best friend Leon Denny. Stephen was predeceased by his wife Mary Theresa (Joe), son Stephen Levi, brother Alfred ‘Auchie’ and sister Marion. Visitation for the late Mr. Marshall will begin (today) Saturday, Feb. 13 after 7 p.m. at the Gabriel Center, Eskasoni. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Christine (MacLeod) Ling. In life, Claire enjoyed many things such as music, dancing and gardening. Ann Bernick Born In: New Glasgow, Canada Passed in: New Waterford, Canada Passed on: February 9th, 2016 Ann Bernick, former longtime resident of New Waterford and born in New Glasglow, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2015, in Toronto, Ont. at Baycrest Apotex Centre. Survived by her children Inez (Ephram) Gerber, Merle (Bruce) Ames, and Mark (Laurie) Bernick. Grandchildren Sean, Shayna (Joel), Malka (Sarah), Brianna, Elysha, Kaley, Aaron, Josh (Kayla), Alana. Great-grandchildren Josh, Aiden, Ben, Melissa, Lior, Adi Maple. Sisters Jean Trainor and Stephanie Ames. Predeceased by her husband Al, her parents Isaac and Ethel Berlovitch and sibling Bessie, Walter, Harold, and Miriam. Special appreciation to her loving and devoted caregivers Marge, Marla, Charmaine and Viola. Ann was fiercely independent, very determined, and exceedingly generous.
