Born in Louisbourg, Sheila was the daughter of the late Bill and Alice (Moore) Skinner. In her early years she was employed by National Sea Products then Parks Canada where she retired in 2015. Sheila was a member of Branch 62 Ladies Auxiliary for many years, she volunteered her time with Louisbourg Food Bank. Sheila was an avid reader, and tarabish player, she also loved to quilt and crochet. Sheila is survived by her son Barry (Tanya), Louisbourg; grandchildren, Taylor, Jahyd, Nathan and Anna, whom she loved with all her heart. She was also survived by special nieces, Gail, Alice Marie; nephews, Jeff, Barry, Cecil, David and Jody; sister-in-law, Angela Taylor, Maxine Antle; brothers-in-law, Less, Maurice, Eugene, and Harry Joe Fudge, all of Burin, N.L. She is also survived by special lifetime friends, Patsy MacDonald, Allister MacDonald and 'special' aunt Colleen Billard. Sheila was predeceased by her husband Tom, son Devon, brother Carl, sister Marge sister-in-law Eileen Skinner, Anna Plank and brother-in-law Len Fudge. Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Sheila will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Louisbourg. Funeral service will be held the Following day at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Church with Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home. Gwendolyn 'Gwen' (Gouthro) Walker Born In: Gardiner Mines Passed in: New Waterford It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear mother, Gwen, on Feb. 11, 2106 Born in Gardiner Mines, she was the daughter of the late James and Agnes (Petrie) Gouthro. Gwen was a member of the former Mount Carmel Parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. In her early years she enjoyed playing bingo and shooting darts. Her favourite pastime was spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her little buddy, Homer. Gwen is survived by three daughters, Bernice (Tom) Rockett, Northside East Bay, Donna (Darren) Jewer and Linda (Johnny) Bisson, both of New Waterford; two sons, Billy (Tracey), Kevin (Amanda), both of New Waterford; one sister Kay MacKenzie, Paris, Ont. Gwen also leaves behind her 12 grandchildren, Tommy Rockett, Mandy (Luke) Theriault, Bernie (Candace) Jewer, Justin (Roberta) Jewer, Josh Walker, Jesse Walker (Angelica), Brea Walker, Jonathan (Kayla) Bisson, Jeremy Bisson, Krista Bisson, Natalie Walker, Noah Walker; Six great-grandchildren, Coady Jewer, Lucas Jewer, Taylor Jewer, Mckayla Jewer, Avery Bisson, Jace Bisson. Gwen was predeceased by her husband Bernie, one grandson, William James Walker, four brothers, Mickey, George, Jimmy and Billy and one sister, Veronica, in infancy. There will be no visitation as per Gwen's wishes. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, following the funeral mass. Rodney 'Roddie' (Libbus) Watkins Born In: Sydney Passed on: February 9th, 2016 It is with broken hearts, we the family announce the sudden passing of our dear father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend Roddie Watkins, on Feb. 9, 2016 at the CCU unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney after a brief illness. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Jean Watkins and was raised by the late Charles and Violet Libbus. Roddie is survived by his best friend and partner, Brenda Williamson; his children, Shauna (Robin Krszwda), Terry, Tammy and Marcy (Joe Bicknell) Watkins, and stepchildren, Christa (Tommy) Trainor, Lindsey, Jessica and Cyril MacDonald; his grandchildren, Chelsea and Roger Best, Robert Candelora Jr., Karli Sawchuk, Lily Trainor, Mya MacDonald; great grandson, Kameron, as well as Brenda's father, Cyril Williamson. He is also survived by her sisters, Esther (Alex) Tomko, Karen (Stuart) Boozan, sister-in-law, Madeline Libuss; 11 favourite nieces and six nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Joe Libbus and Charles 'Sandy' Libbus, and sister, Louise (Murray) Matheson. Roddie worked with his brother Joe for many years as an auto body repair assistant. He was also employed with R.B. MacNeil and R&R Transmission from where we retired. Roddie had a strong love for the outdoors hunting, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed crafting and making preserves to sell at local craft fairs. In recent years, he and Brenda loved traveling south in the winter. He will be missed for his mischeivous personality and sense of humour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Laurence 'Laurie' Edwin Fraser Born In: Edwardsville Passed in: Sydbey Passed on: February 11th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving brother, uncle, great uncle and friend Laurence Edwin Fraser, 77. Laurie passed away Feb. 11, 2016 in the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Edwardsville, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Loretta (Lewis) Fraser. Laurie was a person of very strong faith and it was rare to have a conversation with him in which his faith was not mentioned. He loved spending time with his nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Laurie was an avid traveler who enjoyed many trips across Canada, United States as well as a trip to Europe. Laurie was a painter by trade and took pride in his hobby farm where he raised lambs, sheep, chickens and horses. He was also proud of his vegetable garden and making his own maple syrup. In his younger years he was also a harness racer and owned two race horses, Irish Derby and Major Wyn. He had a great deal of musical talent being able to play the fiddle, guitar and accordion, he played and sang at many family gatherings. Laurie gave generously to charities. Survived by sisters, Evelyn Jennings, Edwardsville, Barbara Huntington, Point Edward and Marjorie (Rod) Dow, Bedford; brothers, Elmer, Edwardsville and Steve (Heather), Ben Eoin; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Melvin, Russell and Joe, brother-in-law, Max Jennings and sister-in-law, Anna Fraser. Visitation for the late Mr. Laurence Fraser will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Holy Rosary Church. Interment in Church of Incarnation Cemetery, Edwardsville. Kenneth Wiley Grant Passed in: Gabarus Passed on: February 9th, 2016 Kenneth Grant, age 83, of Gabarus passed away after a lengthy illness on Feb. 9, 2016, in palliative care at Sydney Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Wiley and Elsie (Reid) Grant. As a young man he travelled to Halifax seeking work. His first job was with the I.H. Mathers steamship company. In 1956 he joined Trans Canada Airlines. Having worked in many capacities within Air Canada he retired in December 1984. From 1985-1989 he worked for Air Canada Reservec as a sales representative for the Atlantic Region and then from 1989-1996 he worked for Gemini as a sales representative for Atlantic Canada, retiring for a final time in 1996. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 61 years June (O’Brien) Grant, his cherished daughter Sherry Edwards (Paul) and his two precious granddaughters Colleen and Kathryn. He also leaves to mourn his four special nieces and one nephew and their families. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Freda Libby and Mildred Gray, brothers in-law Roy Libby and Duncan Gray, Niece Fay Libby and Great nephew Fred Dickie. Ken was a kind and gentleman who loved his family and home. He made many friends during his lifetime. He was well respected by his peers & co-workers; never a man to criticize but always a man to praise. The last few years of his illness was made more bearable by the support and compassion of family, friends and neighbours. The food that constantly appeared, mail delivery, snow shoveling, drives to the hockey games, road trips and chats on the veranda, showed just how much he was loved. You could often find him down at the beach in a fish house with the 'beach boys' spinning yarns. The family would like to thank all who have taken time from their busy lives to visit or call Ken while he was in the Glace Bay General Hospital & Harbourstone Extended Care Facility these past three years; it meant so much to him. A special thank you to our family doctor Dr. James Maclean and all the staff at both facilities who made his homes away from home pleasant, comfortable and reassuring, Ken truly loved you all. Ken was a member of Bethany United Church in Halifax and an adherent to Zion Wesley United in Gabarus. Visitation will take place Feb. 12 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexander St., Sydney from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held Feb. 13 at Chant’s at 2 p.m.; Nancy Whitney Latham officiating. Martina 'Tina' Donovan Born In: Frenchvale Born: April 24th, 1944 Passed in: Frenchvale North Sydney Passed on: February 10th, 2016 It is with great sadness, we the family, wish to announce the peaceful passing of Martina Tina' Evelyn Donovan, age 71, loving mother, grandmother and sister on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016 at Northside General Hospital. Born at home in Frenchvale on April 24, 1944, she was predeceased by her parents Martin and Mary Gouthro as well as a sister Josephine and brother Fredrick. Tina was a single parent for over 40 years to her three proud and eternally grateful sons; Shawn (Caroline), Ottawa, Ronald (Lynn), Sydney Mines and John (Angela), Cambridge. Tina also leaves behind four beautiful grandchildren, Luke, Emma, Shawn Jamie and Edward. Also left to mourn are her sisters Mildred MacKinnon, Westmount, Regina Cann (Cecil) and brother Thomas (Peggy) Gouthro, North Sydney, nieces and nephews. The entire Donovan and Gouthro families would like to thank the staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Cancer Centre, Northside General Hospital as well as VON, mom’s home and palliative care teams. Ann Bernick Born In: New Glasgow, Canada Passed in: New Waterford, Canada Passed on: February 9th, 2016 Ann Bernick, former longtime resident of New Waterford and born in New Glasglow, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2015, in Toronto, Ont. at Baycrest Apotex Centre. Survived by her children Inez (Ephram) Gerber, Merle (Bruce) Ames, and Mark (Laurie) Bernick. Grandchildren Sean, Shayna (Joel), Malka (Sarah), Brianna, Elysha, Kaley, Aaron, Josh (Kayla), Alana. Great-grandchildren Josh, Aiden, Ben, Melissa, Lior, Adi Maple. Sisters Jean Trainor and Stephanie Ames. Predeceased by her husband Al, her parents Isaac and Ethel Berlovitch and sibling Bessie, Walter, Harold, and Miriam. Special appreciation to her loving and devoted caregivers Marge, Marla, Charmaine and Viola. Ann was fiercely independent, very determined, and exceedingly generous.
