Teresa LeFort, CND - 91 yrs Mildred Isabel Bagnell Born In: Louisbourg Born: February 22nd, 1921 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 28th, 2016 Mildred Isabel Bagnell, beloved wife of the late Philip Edwin Bagnell and loving mother of Philip Clyde (Heather) and Isobel May (Charles) MacLennan passed away peacefully at Arborstone Enhanced Care on March 28, 2016. Born on Feb. 22, 1921 as the youngest of four children, and only daughter, of Enoch and Awilda Clyde (MacGillivray) Townsend of Louisbourg. She lived through remarkable times. While still a child her parents were required be admitted to the Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Kentville, N.S., leaving her in the care of her brothers (Bill, Jim and Frank). Her memories of their loving care and the protective relationships her brothers developed with their baby sister persisted through each of their lives. She married our Dad on Aug. 2, 1940 with him in army uniform and our country at war. This love affair seemed to grow through each of their 71 years together and it is impossible to discuss one without the other. After the war they moved to Halifax with their two children where Dad began his lifelong career with London Life Insurance Company and Mom became the caring and ever present anchor in our daily lives. Appliances, such as the washing machine to replace the scrubbing board and the refrigerator to replace the ice box, eventually appeared in our home, but it was only on reflection as adults that we realized our mother never gave indication any of this created inconvenience or hardship. She was active in the women’s group at Edgewood United Church and it seemed as if most of the student ministers from Pine Hill Divinity eventually found themselves at our Sunday table for some of Mom’s great cooking. Dad’s transfer as regional manager in Moncton, N.B. in the mid-fifties brought new experiences for Mom along with the challenges of raising two high school children. During this time family trips and vacations were our most anticipated events. Living in a cabin in Fundy National Park and taking trips to P.E.I. on the Abegweit were combined with other adventures in the exploration of our maritime provinces. Such trips always meant there would be nights of competitive games, laughter, Mom’s food and, when needed, her firm redirection if competition was getting out of hand. Dad was transferred back to Halifax in the mid-sixties before returning to Sydney as district manager. During these years Mom continued to provide wonderful food and hospitality for friends, relatives, business associates and the growing families provided by her now married children. These were wonderful years for her. She and Dad could be seen wandering hand-in-hand at Louisbourg, Kennington Cove, Gabarous and other scenic sites and vacation spots on their beloved Cape Breton Island. Frequent family gatherings with grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a plus that always appeared to add a sparkle to her eyes. For the last 30 years of their lives together they became committed Florida Snowbirds and looked forward each year to joining with many of their Nova Scotian friends in a warmer climate. We wish to thank Dr. Paul Murphy for the exemplary care he delivered to both our Mom and Dad during their years in Sydney and Dr. Lewis and the dedicated staff on the second floor of Arborstone Enhanced Care for the competent and compassionate care our Mom received there over the past two years. In addition to her son, Philip and daughter, Isobel, she is survived by her much loved grandchildren, Alexa (Patrick Keefe) Bagnell, Jeffrey (Nancy) MacLennan, Scott (Suzie) Bagnell, Sheridan (Greg) Bailly, Christina MacLennan, Kurt (Susan) MacLennan, and Regan (Paul Yeatman) Bagnell and great-grandchildren, Connor, Ian and Grant (Alexa), Jordan, Zac and Carter (Jeff), Mac and Annika (Scott), Sawyer, Olin and Thatcher (Sheridan), Isobel and William (Christina) and Emily, Matthew and Olivia (Kurt). The family will celebrate her life with friends on Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. (with service to follow at 4 p.m.) at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Rev.
