Born in New Waterford, Buddy was the son of the late Roy and Mamie (Ryan) Kane. Buddy was a bartender at the Army, Navy, Airforce Hall, New Waterford for 26 years, he was also a life member as well. He served with the Canadian military during the Korean conflict. Buddy enjoyed playing crib, tarabish, darts and in his younger years he was involved with boxing. He always had a quick come back to whatever anyone said. Buddy is survived by his daughter, Linda (Allie), grandson, Warren, granddaughters, Kathy (Sheldon), Sherri (Richard), Melanie, eight great-granddaughters, Jessica, Kayla, Madisyn, Courtney, Elizabeth, Brianna, Zoe, Mya and one great-grandson, Myles. He was predeceased by his brother, Roy, sisters, Bea (Willie), Fernie (Jim), daughter, Cathy, granddaughter, Melanie, grandson, Brian Marusiak Jr. and son in law, Brian Marusiak Sr. No visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley is Tuesday, 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church followed by interment in St. Agnes Cemetery. The reception will be held in the Army/Navy/Air Force Hall, Smith Street, New Waterford. Dennis Lee Kaiser Born In: Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed in: Canada It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dennis Lee Kaiser of Westmount on April 13, 2016, at the age of 70. Born in Kentville, N.S., he was the son of the late Havelock and Maude (Potter) Kaiser. Dennis grew up in Port Bickerton and attended St. Mary’s Rural High School, Sherbrook. He lived and worked as a sheet metal worker in Cape Breton for many years and retired in Westmount. Dennis' passions in life were his family, friends and music. He was an accomplished musician and enjoyed sharing his talents with his friends, family and beyond. He enjoyed the bluegrass music played with a few bands throughout his years of playing and enjoyed jamming at Alan and Sandra’s. Dennis played a variety of instruments but his love was playing the banjo. He enjoyed paying cards at home with his extended family. He was on the CKPE FM Radio for many years, doing shows known as the Stain Glass Bluegrass on Sunday mornings and the Best of Bluegrass. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Margaret (Thompson) Kaiser; children, Tammy, Westmount, Angela (Christian Nichol), Sydney; his precious grandchildren, Ayslynn, Donavan and Samantha; one great-granddaughter, Sophia. He is also survived by his brother, Harold (Marie), Port Bickerton; sisters, Cathy (Paul Archibald), Glennelg, Dana (Sam Moon), Dartmouth. Dennis will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, and many friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, David and two sisters in infancy. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, April 15, 2016, from 7-9 pm at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A celebration of life will be take place 11 a.m., Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the funeral home with the Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow at the Westside Legion, Westmount Hughena Roach Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: April 13th, 2016 Hughena Roach, 96, of New Waterford, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late John 'Jack' and Margaret (MacDougall) Higgins. Hughena enjoyed playing darts, camping at Ben Eoin campground and dancing. She was a longtime participant in the Joy Program at Mt. Carmel School and a proud member of the New Waterford Pensioners' Club. Hughena is survived by her son, Russell (Sharon); daughters, Patricia (John) Campbell and Barbara Roach (Bernie MacDonald), all of New Waterford, Eileen (Geoff) Jarrett, Bracebridge, Ont., Linda (Reg Baker), Huntsville, Ont.; sister, Lilly Wootton, London, Ont. She was affectionately known as "Mere" to her 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Hubert, in 1983; six sisters, Gertie, Mary, Marie, Viola, Agnes and Beatrice; one brother, Billy and special brother, little Bill. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 17, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday, April 18, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mt. James David 'Jim' Taylor Born In: Glace Bay Born: November 14th, 1935 Passed on: April 12th, 2016 On April 12, 2016, Jim passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Glace Bay, on Nov. 14, 1935, he was the son of the late James and Margaret (Robinson) Taylor. Jim was a loving husband, proud father, devoted grandfather and uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Isabel (Drake) and children, Donna (Doug Allan), Jim, and Darrell (Ann Grantmyre) of Halifax, and Brenda (Bob Radchuck) of Toronto; sister-in-law Anne Taylor of Glace Bay, brothers-in-law Kelvin Drake of Whycocomagh and John Bender of Mississauga; grandchildren, Scott (Nancy), Andrew (Kathryn), Andrew James, Luke, Jillian and Ben. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mayme and Ethel; brother, Gordon; and brothers-in-law, John Rooney and Joe Oldford. Jim enjoyed a long career in the insurance industry starting with Metropolitan Life in Sydney, and transferred to Halifax in 1970 with Excelsior Life. Later he ran his own general insurance agency until he retired. Family and friends were everything to Jim. He will be remembered for his quick wit, kindness and wisdom. Jim had many interests including travel, golfing, playing bridge, curling, hockey, and boating. From a young age he was drawn to the water and loved to be near it, on it or in it. He was a member of Grandview Golf & Country Club. He was a longtime member of Rockingham United Church where he sang in the Senior Men's Choir. He was a lifetime member of the Tyrian Masonic Lodge No. 45. Throughout the progression of his disease he maintained his love for life, never complaining and always seeing the positive. We admired his strength and spirit. The family is grateful to Dr. Ed Kinley and Jim Dier for their care and kindness. A heartfelt thank you to the VON, palliative-care team and the many friends for their love and support. Nellie Rosemary Gillis Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: April 13th, 2016 It is with great sadness the family wish to announce the passing of their mother, grandmother and sister, Nellie Gillis on April 13, 2015 at the Maple Hill Manor surrounded by her loving family. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Freddie and Mildred (Boutilier) MacKenzie. Nellie had worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia as a teller, she was an avid card player, especially bridge and tarabish. She loved crocheting and was a great seamstress. She is survived by sons, Gerard (Wendy), Johnny (Laura Lee); daughters, Thelma (Danny) Dowie, Colette (Robert); sisters, Charlotte (Neil) MacKenzie, Theresa Fitzpatrick and brother, Freddie (Sharon); grandchildren, Brent, Bonnie, Lauren, David, Kenzie, Tessa, Alison and Kelly. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Colin Gillis; sisters, Hilda, Evie and brother, Joseph; brothers-in-law, Bernie Gillis, Carl Campbell and John Fitzpatrick. Cremation has taken place and visitation will be held today (Friday, April 15) from 5-9 p.m. and a funeral mass to celebrate Nellie's life will take place Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard's, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment in St. Michael's Cemetery followed by a luncheon in the parish hall, Convent Street. All are welcome. Thomas James 'Joe E' Morris Thomas Morris, age 89, of Port Hawkesbury, N.S., passed away in Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home April 13, 2016. Joe was born in Sydney, the son of Thomas James and Caroline Margaret (MacKenzie) Morris. Survived by daughters, Adrienne (Scott) Smith, Dundee; Jo Ann Armitage, St. George’s Channel; son, Jeff (Iryna Karaush) Morris, Vancouver; granddaughter, Helen (Neil) Morley, Ardoise; brothers, Harvey, East Bay; Earle (Sandra), Sydney, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by wife, Jean (MacDonald) Morris; son-in-law, Jack Armitage; sister, Marguerite Burns, Texas. An avid boater and fly fisherman. Served overseas in the Second World War in the Governor General’s Footguards Canadian Armoured Corps. He worked for General Motors, Sampson Motors, Atlantic Concrete, and operated Imperial Oil Bulk Plant. Member of Port Hawkesbury Curling Club and The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43. A great sport, storyteller, friend and gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him.
