Mae was born in Bridgeport, the daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (McNeil) McCormick. During Mae's career as a teacher, she taught a variety of grade levels in the local community schools and retired after 35 years, teaching high school English her last years at Breton Education Center, New Waterford. She always enjoyed attending the retired teachers dinners keeping in touch with her past colleagues. She was an active member of lmmaculate Conception Catholic Church and an honorary member of the Catholic Women's League. She enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, knitting and she was an avid reader. She went on several bus tours with friends, always having a great time. Mae is survived by her daughter Teresina (Terry) Egan, Medicine Hat, Alta.; son Bernard (Marie Martin) McNeil, Dominion; daughter Margaret Anne (Tom Vokey) Judge, Head St. Margaret's Bay; daughter Eileen McNeil, Dominion; grandchildren, James (Stephanie) Judge; Susan (Gary Cole) Judge; Adam Judge; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Adrienne Judge; sisters Rita Reynolds, Boston, Mass.; Theresa Campbell, Boston, Mass; brothers Roddie (Colleen) McCormick, Dartmouth, Harvey (Linda) McCormick, Sydney; brother-in-law Charles Costello, New York and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband James McNeil, sisters Shirley Delazzer and Connie Costello, daughter-in-law Deborah McNeil, sons-in-law Douglas Judge and Joseph Egan. Visitation will be held Monday, April 25, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Bridgeport, Tuesday, April 26, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception in the church hall. Mary Agnes Hillier Born In: Port Hawkesbury, Canada Born: April 8th, 1925 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 21st, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Agnes 'Aggie' Hillier of 312 Esplanade, Sydney, on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Port Hawkesbury on April 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Dan P. and Mary Margaret (MacInnis) Ryan. Aggie was a member of Sacred Heart parish. For a number of years, the family operated “Archies” convenience store on Mira Road. Retiring in 1985, Aggie and Ernie travelled to Britain, Ireland, Western Canada and Nashville. Aggie is survived by her husband, Ernest Archibald 'Ernie'; sons, Donnie (Gail) and Charlie; grandson, Jamie; great-grandsons, Mark and Keigan Hillier. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews in Port Hawkesbury and Western Canada. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Ralph, Jim, Leslie, Harvey (Yvonne), Donnie (Gladys), Louis (June) and Roddie, sisters, Kay Danesok (Dave), Mildred Steel (Edward), Marion Cyrenne (Robert), Anna Pollard (Jack), Margaret McNeil (Charles). Born in Sydney, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Theresa (Crewe) Aucoin. Barbara graduated from Saint Elizabeth’s Nursing School, worked 30 years at the Halifax Infirmary and QEII Hospital. She lived in Hammonds Plains retiring to Tancook Island. Barbara is survived by her husband Beverley, children Patrick (Doris) of Bedford, Peter of Vancouver, and Lisa (Joe) Fougere of Westphal, N.S. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jasmine, Joseph, Mellisa and Cheryl, as well as her great-granddaughter Myah. She is also survived by sisters Janet (Fred Griffin), Sydney and Michelle (Sheldon Roach), Sackville, N.S. and sister-in -law Sharon Aucoin, Ottawa. Also survived by niece Amy and two nephews Adam and Tyler. Aside from her parents, Barb was predeceased by brothers Paul and Gerry, and inlaws Warren and Olive Pearl. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at St Vincent de Paul’s Parish, 320 Flying Cloud Dr., Dartmouth, N.S. on Monday, April 25 with a reception at the church. Burial will take place on Tancook Island Tuesday at 12 noon with a reception to follow at the Tancook Recreation Center. Debabrata Bhattacharjee Dr. Debabrata Bhattacharjee of Toronto and formerly Sydney, N.S., passed away on April 20, 2016 aged 88. Dr. Bhattacharjee was born in Sylhet in pre-partition India. Following medical training at the University of Calcutta, he completed residencies in the United Kingdom and Canada before becoming staff radiologist at St. Elizabeth Hospital in North Sydney, N.S. (now Northside General) in 1967. He served the communities of North Sydney, Sydney Mines and New Waterford for over 40 years before retiring to Toronto with his dear wife, Dipti, who predeceased him in 2013. He died peacefully and with dignity, with his family at his side. He will be mourned by his son Subrata, his daughter-in-law Erin, and his granddaughter Maya, as well as his loving family in India and the United States. He will also be missed by lifelong friends in the South Asian community in Cape Breton, as well as his many colleagues from the X-Ray department at Northside General. Ian Douglas Ratchford Born In: Sydney Born: June 25th, 1960 Passed in: Penbroke Ont. Passed on: April 17th, 2016 Born June 25, 1960, formerly of Sydney, N.S., Ian passed away in Pembroke, Ont. on April 17, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ian is survived by his partner, Diedre Lambert and their two children, Myra and Jordan all of Pembroke, Ont. and daughter, Ellenna Ratchford of Sydney, N.S. Ian is also survived by siblings, David, Toronto, Dennis & Valerie, Sydney, Michael & Lara, Grande Cache, John & Leeanne, Sydney, Joan & Allan Cullen, Regina and Barbara & John Wells, Sydney. Ian is also survived several nieces and nephews. Ian loved and adored his children and will be sadly missed by all. The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Haney, nurses and staff on the 3rd floor of Pembroke Regional Hospital for their care and compassion during Ian's last days with us. A thank you to the doctors and staff at the Irving Greenwood Cancer Center in Ottawa, Ont. for all their care. Ian had a deep passion for playing guitar and he taught us that when music hits you, you feel no pain. He was able to pick up a guitar and bring everyone together in song and laughter.
