Helen passed away quietly with her family by her side, on April 4, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Inverness on June 28, 1929, Helen was the daughter of the late Nealina (Patterson) and John Murdock MacLean. Helen is survived by her sons, Donnie (Linda), Sydney, Wally (Charlene), Sydney, Steven (Lorenna), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Kevin (Gina), Bryan (Liz), Billy (Amanda), Samantha, Mitchell, Nathan, Stephanie (Cody), Kyle, Lora; great-grandchildren, Cody, Jayce and Gracie Rose; she is also survived by her sisters, Mary Patterson, Sydney, Sandra MacLean (Bob Findlay), Cape Cod; brother, David (Susan), New Glasgow, and sister-in-law, Murdell, Sydney. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Wallace Hines; sister, Sadie (John Andrew) MacDonald; brothers, Donald (Garnet), John 'Mogue' and stepmother, Mae MacLean. Helen shared many proud moments talking about her boys and later her daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Family was Helen's dearest treasure. Helen embarked on her teaching careen, leaving Inverness at the early age of 16 and began a dedicated career in special education in the city of Toronto. It was there she married Wally and taught for 25 years before returning home to Cape Breton, where she retired from a 46 year teaching career. Helen was passionate about her students and touched many lives. Helen and Wally embraced family with open hearts and open doors. They enjoyed retirement years in Florida and trips to the races in P.E.I. She also enjoyed playing bingo with friends With the fondest memories of mom, we love you so very much. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation, or a charity of ones choice. Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Helen will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 1-3 p.m. in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with a celebration of life to take place at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of… Clifford Basil Marshall Born In: Sydney Passed in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: April 3rd, 2016 Clifford Basil Marshall, 60, passed away peacefully at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish on the Divine Mercy Sunday April 3, 2016 with his loving family by his side. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Thomas Alexander and Pauline Marie (Battiste) Marshall. Clifford was very active in the community and was a former addictions counselor. He was also the proprietor of Tranquility Tours in Chapel Island. He is survived by his son, Chance (Ashley), Tobique First Nation; daughter, Charlene Coulinceur-Mazerolle, Tobique First Nation; grandchildren, Chandler, Abraham; brothers, Alexander (Margie), Maynard (Jeannette), Lindsay (Florence), all of Potlotek; sisters, Nora (Peter), Bernard, Eskasoni, Rosemary Marshall, Bernadette Marshall, Sharon (Lester), Johnson, all of Potlotek; godparents, Murray Marshall and Theresa Stephens, both of Potlotek; his special friend, Edward Young, Potlotek. Eileen Louise Kerr, RN Born: December 21st, 1933 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 4th, 2016 We, the family of Eileen Louise Kerr, regret to announce her passing on Monday, April 4, 2016, at Celtic Court, Sydney. Born Dec. 21, 1933, Eileen was a daughter of the late Daniel and Gladys (Burton) Kerr. Until retirement, she worked at the City Hospital as a registered nurse. Eileen was a member of United Baptist Church and an adherent of Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Sheane, Ont.; brother, Gordon, Sydney; several nieces and nephews; and best friend, Hattie MacAskill. Eileen was predeceased by her brothers, Lloyd and Roddie. Margaret (Ormond) LeLievre Born: March 27th, 1933 It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce our mom's passing at the Royal Columbian Hospital in British Columbia on April 1, 2016. Born in Sydney on March 27, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Susanna (O'Grady) Ormond, Sydney, N.S. and wife of the late Dennis LeLievre. A loving mother to her three daughters, Camille, Michele and Leanne and two sons, Sheldon and Paul, proud grandmother to Michael, Matthew, Rebecca, Meaghan and Brenden. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Theresa 'Mamie' Johnston, Ottawa and one brother, Edmund Ormond, Sydney; sister-in-law, Margaret Ormond, Vancouver Island and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by two brothers, Phillip and Dougal Ormond. Margie resided most of her life in Nakusp, B.C. and had spent the last number of years in Surrey surrounded by her children and grandchildren enjoying life. She enjoyed her outings, bingo and card games with her friends. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, April 7th at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 8842 119 St., Delta, B.C. Gerard Prendergast Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Summerside PEI Passed on: April 2nd, 2016 The death occurred peacefully at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, P.E.I., on Saturday, April 2, 2016 of Gerard 'Gerry' Prendergast of South Shore Villa, Crapaud, P.E.I. and formerly of Summerside, aged 87 years. Gerry was born in Glace Bay, N.S. to his late parents Thomas and Florence (nee Steele) Prendergast. Beloved husband of the late Lydia (nee MacDonald) Prendergast and loving father of John (Shelley) Prendergast and Tracy (Paul Merriam) Prendergast. Also lovingly remembered by his two grandchildren, Duncan and Shea. Besides his parents, Gerry was predeceased by his brothers and sisters. Dennis Alexander MacLean Born In: Sydney Born: December 22nd, 1946 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 3rd, 2016 We, the family of Dennis Alexander MacLean, regret to announce his passing on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney. He passed away peacefully with his daughter at his side. Born in Sydney on Dec. 22, 1946, he was the oldest son of the late John Alexander and Frances Lydia May (Hill) MacLean. Dennis is survived by his daughter, Darcie (Kenny Latham), Sydney; her mother, his first wife, Linda Donovan; adopted son, Jeffery (Tena), Alta., his mother, Dennis’s second wife, Lisa Barrett; third wife, Anne Marie MacNeil; sisters, Nancy, Lake Ainslie, Sandra (Danny), B.C. and Betty, Alta.; brothers, Robert (Betty), B.C., Blair, Alta., and Maurice, Halifax; many nieces and nephews. For 22 years, Dennis was employed as a design draftsman with Butler Buildings/Maritime Builders. He had other jobs before and after, but his two favourite were at the Two Rivers Wildlife Park and with CBRM Fire Services Inspections & By-Laws. Dennis loved anything to do with the outdoors, photography and working with his hands and was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney and the St. Andrew’s Men’s Club. A heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff on Fisherman's Cove at Harbourstone for their compassion and care of my father for the past number of years. Dad suffered from Lewy Body Dementia, but was always upbeat, loved music and loved to make everyone laugh. As per Dad's wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Interment will take place at a later date. Bernard Aloysius 'Bernie' Peck Born In: Sydney Mines Born: January 28th, 1930 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 26th, 2016 We regret to announce the passing of Bernard 'Bernie' Peck on Saturday, March, 26, 2016 at McGillivray Guest Home, Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines on Jan. 28, 1930, he was the son of the late Joseph Lockman and Loretta (MacDonald) Peck of Sydney Mines. Bernie spent most of his working life working with his father at Peck’s S&S in Sydney Mines, eventually taking over the business in 1980. Bernie had a passion for harness racing; he was owner, trainer and driver of a stable of horses, owning as many as seven horses at one time. He was also a member of the Horsemen’s Hall of Fame. Another love of Bernie’s was hockey; earlier in life he played hockey with the New Glasgow Rangers for several years. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Grace (Howley); daughter, Laura (Barry McLoughlin), Ottawa; sons, Joe (Karenanne), Sydney Mines and Greg, Ontario, along with seven loving grandchildren, who he adored, Caroline, Brendan and Liam McLoughlin, Shonagh, Kyle, Sean and Brendan Peck. He is also survived by sisters, Marie Hartigan, Joan Ryan and Helen (Dr. Wayne) Middlekamp, along with many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Bernie was predeceased by brothers, Gerard (Jan) and Brendan and brothers-in-law, Billy Hartigan and Leonard Ryan. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of JM Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A funeral to celebrate Bernie’s life will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at 1 p.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. J.J. MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McGillivray Guest Home or the Northside Harbour View Hospital Foundation.
