Born Nov. 15, 1947 in Sydney, he was the eldest child of the late Lar and Peggy Hartigan. Lawrence was a carpenter and cabinetmaker by trade. He is survived by his wife, Karen (Brooks); daughter, Tanya (Ken) and grandchildren, Carver and Leah of Brudenheim, Alta. and son, Lawrence (Jenny) and grandchildren, Emma and Oliver of Innisfail, Alta. Also surviving are two brothers, Carl, Antigonish and Dennis, Whitney Pier and three sisters, Linda, Colleen and Sally, all of Cape Breton Island. Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by brothers, Allan (35), John (31) and Tony in infancy. Cremation has taken place. For those wishing, a donation to any Alzheimers charity would be appreciated by the family. David Morrison Born In: Loch Lomond Born: December 9th, 1950 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: April 27th, 2016 We, the family of David Fraser Morrison, regret to announce his passing on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born Dec. 9, 1950, in Loch Lomond, he was the son of the late William and Helen (MacInnis) Morrison. Dave was a heavy equipment operator and the owner/operator of D.F.M. Disposal. In his later years, he enjoyed restoring old tractors. Dave was an elder of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Loch Lomond. He is survived by his loving best friend, Rosemary Carter; children, Curtis (Jenni), David Todd (Penny), Davinna (Curtis) MacAulay and Jocelyn (Ross) MacAulay; sisters, Wilma (Gordon) Rhodenizer, and Ann Neil; brother, Robert; seven grandchildren; sister-in-law, Cindy Morrison. Dave was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth, Peter and Dan Alex. A graveside service will take place at Pioneer Cemetery, Loch Lomond today (Saturday) at 3 p.m., with Rev. Corrie Stewart officiating. Special thanks to the VON, palliative care, staff of the Sydney Cancer Clinic, along with the numerous doctors involved with his care. Dorothy Mancini Born In: Bateston Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 25th, 2016 It is with deepest sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother and sister, Dorothy, at the Cove Guest Home on April 25, 2016. Born in Bateston, Dorothy was the daughter of the late David and Elizabeth (MacDougall) O’Neill. Mom enjoyed her profession as a CNA working at St. Rita Hospital until health issues forced her to retire at the age of 50. Coming from a musical family, Dorothy pursed her passion, studying organ and piano and was a choir member at Holy Rosary in Westmount. She was also a lifelong active member of the CWL. She enjoyed volunteering her time for various community organizations. Dorothy is survived by her loving son, Anthony (Nancy), Beaumont, Alta.; daughters, Pamela (Glenn) Langille, Sydney and Laurie Mancini (Terry), Grimbsy, Ont. Dorothy was very proud of her five grandchildren, Nicole, Marc, Myles, Warren and Kiana. Also surviving are her sisters, Anne, Rose, Coleen (Rod), Marilyn (Glenn), Germaine and brothers, Donald and David. She was predeceased by her son, David Joseph and husband, Gordon; her sister, Marguerite and brothers, Bill and Joseph (in infancy). She was also predeceased by brothers-in-law, Arnold Alexander and Isaac Warren; nephews, Gregory and Albert Alexander. Dorothy is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Kay, Lorraine (Norm) and Theresa and several nieces and nephews. Visitation for Dorothy will be held at Chant’s Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Sunday, May 1, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Patrick O'Neill officiating. Reception to follow. Burial to take place at Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery in Main-a-Dieu. Hilda 'Marie' DeGiobbi Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: April 27th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce that Marie DeGiobbi, 58, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of Hilda (Pastuck) McKinnon and the late John McKinnon. Marie enjoyed going for long drives, a good game of bingo with friends, but her main joy in life was spending time with her son, Ryan. She is survived by her mother Hilda; husband Brian; son Ryan; daughter, Jerrylyn; brother, John Calvin (Shannon); sister, Mary (Gerald); grandsons, Josh and Coady; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends, Aunt Linda MacKinnon, Bridget MacCuish and Donna Steiger. Besides her father, she was predeceased by her son, Brian. Cremation has taken place and a chapel service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating, followed by a luncheon at the K.O.C, Plummer Avenue. All are welcome. Burial to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Clare Larade Born In: New Waterford Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 13th, 2016 We regret to announce the passing of Clare Larade, age 82 of Sydney on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a brief illness. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Simmie and Nora (Cathcart) Larade. Clare retired from Transport Canada as a firefighter at Sydney Airport. He was owner/operator of Simeon’s Restaurant, first in New Waterford and presently in Sydney. In his early years, Clare played basketball with the Strands and baseball with the Giants, both teams are hall of fame inductees. Clare performed a lot of behind the scenes work in organizing and setting up these teams along with fundraising for both; he was also a former member of the New Waterford Rotary Club. Clare was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was also a founding member of the New Waterford Coal Dust Days Committee since its inception many years ago. Clare was an animal lover and he especially loved his family cats, Sasha and Lily. He fed many strays and found homes for a lot of them over the years. Clare will be greatly missed by Simeon’s staff, many of whom have been with him since opening, whose loyalty he very much appreciated. Clare is survived by his wife, Sharon (MacDonald) Larade; two sons, Howard (Sandra), Darren (Christine); two daughters, Cindy Polegato (Robert), Carol Lee Larade (Rodney) and their mother, Florine. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Haleigh, Kyle, Kendall, Aidan, Angelina, Jillian, Jennifer, Lauren; three brothers, Joe, Greg, Bob Larade and his sister-in-law, Colleen MacDonald, with whom he had a special friendship. Besides his parents, Clare was predeceased by his sister, Helen MacLeod. No visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley is on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church, New Waterford followed by a reception in the parish hall on Convent Street, New Waterford. "Clare will be sadly missed" Helene Siegel Passed on: April 21st, 2016 Helene Siegel, peacefully on April 21, 2016 in her 98th year. Wife of the late Louis. Mother of Sandy (Mary Kane), Shirley (Syd Bernstein) and the late Richard (Jennifer). Grandmother of Hannah Poole (Adam), David Bernstein, Ashley and Megan Siegel, and Taryn Atlin (Bram). Born in Saint John, N.B., married life brought her to Glace Bay and Sydney, N.S. Trained as a nurse, Helene studied into her seventies, obtaining certificates and degrees at the University of Cape Breton, Dalhousie and Mount Saint Vincent. She will ever be remembered for her kindness, tenacity, love of learning and life, and devotion to her family. Thanks to Hillel Lodge staff and Asha Walia for their excellent care. A private funeral service was held.
