All who knew Donnie, knew that he fought to stay with us, having more than nine lives, but this last fight he couldn’t win. Born in Loch Lomond, on July 7, 1944, he was the youngest son of the late Kenneth and Annie (MacLeod) Shaw of Loch Lomond. Donnie lost his father at the age of two weeks in a work-related accident. His mother in later years married Edward MacLeod. Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dorothy (Boudreau), Cow Bay. Donnie was very proud of his five children, “the bad daughter’ Deborah (Richard) MacLeod, Juniper Mtn.; son, Donald Shaw (Wanda), Dutch Brook, “the good daughter” Dale (Ron) Henneberry; son, Derrick (Karen) Shaw, Dunster, B.C.; son, David ( Jenny) Shaw, Tanglewood. He is also survived by his pride and joys, his grandchildren, Breanna, Maggie, Ashley, Brandon, Andrew, Mark, Madelyn, Rozina and Catherine. Donnie also leaves behind his brother, Roddie (Phyllis) Shaw, Sydney; sister, Vivian (Dan Alex) Morrison, Howie Centre, Mae Gould, Sydney River; brother, Lawrence MacLeod, N.B.; brother, Brent MacLeod, Halifax, and sister, Cheryl (Mac) Brewer, Sydney River, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. Donnie and Dorothy lived in Loch Lomond, for the past 43 years, Donnie was employed as a truck driver for many years, until his heart started causing him serious problems. He was a man who liked to stay busy, puttering around the yard, fixing what he could, spending time with his grandchildren, and long talks on the phone for the latest gossip from his longtime friend, Carmen MacDonald. Visitation will take place Wednesday, April 13, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. at the Sydney River First United Church with Rev. Norma Mills officiating. Interment to follow in Loch Lomond. MacKillop for his many years of care to Dad. “Dad you will always be in our hearts, we love you.” Funeral arrangements are under the direction of … Donald Francis Aucoin Born In: Dominion Born: December 1st, 1930 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 12th, 2016 It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Donald Francis Aucoin, 85 of Hills Road, Albert Bridge, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Dominion on Dec. 1, 1930, and raised in Whitney Pier. Donald was the son of the late Thomas and Eunice (Doucette) Aucoin. He was a member of St. Joseph’s parish, Albert Bridge. After a career of 38 years with Sydney Steel Plant, Dad enjoyed working alongside his sons and family on the Aucoin Family Tree Farm where he made many friends over the years. His favourite pastimes were painting, wood working and tending to his apple trees. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ellen (nee Howard); children, Allan, Cathy (Kevin) Elworthy, Tom (Sandra) and Stacy (Jeff) Landry; grandchildren, Stefanie, Matthew (Laura), Emma, Chloe and his brother, William. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his special sister, Gertie; brothers and sisters, Ferman, Leonard, James, Raymond, Bernard, Nora and Eileen. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Monica MacDonald Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 10th, 2016 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Monica MacDonald on Sunday April 10, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late William and Christine Petrie. Monica is survived by one daughter ,Theresa (Garfield); four sons William (Stephanie), James (Linda), Daniel (Kathleen) and Todd (Nancy); 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Dannie; one grandchild, Holly; sister, Theresa (George Mitchell); brothers, John, William, Daniel and James. In accordance with Monica’s wishes cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home. There will be no visitation and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. The family would like to say "Thank You" to all the staff and nurses who cared for mom, especially those at Seaview Manor. Frederick Wilfred MacCuish Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 10th, 2016 With heavy hearts, the family of Frederick Wilfred MacCuish, a longtime resident of Sydney River, announce his passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Sunday, April 10, 2016, after a lengthy illness. He was 86. Born in Glace Bay to parents, Charles and Beatrice (Hawley) MacCuish, he spent his early years in New Aberdeen. By the time Fred was 15, both parents had passed away and he moved to Sydney to live with his only sister, until he moved out on his own. It was in Sydney that he met his future wife, Florence Langley. Fred spent his career working for the railway, first for CNR and later, Via passenger service. For many years, he was active in the United Transportation Union and its predecessor, often taking leadership roles. Fred was a very diligent supporter of figure skating in the area and was a founder of the Sydney Metro Figure Skating Club. Fred initiated the first TV bingo program as an ongoing fundraiser for local figure skaters. He also coached the Riverside Pee Wee Hockey Team of Sydney River with his friend, Bo Stephenson. After he retired, Fred became very active in other organizations, such as, the Golden K, Y’s Mens’ and the Mens’ Brotherhood of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. He greatly enjoyed the fellowship, laughter and wonderful friendships which emerged from these organizations. A longtime member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, Fred also sang in the church’s men’s choir. Predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife, Florence (1993); his sister, Rita and her husband, John Lamond; brothers, Donnie, Buddy, Walter, Jimmy, Allister, George, Russell and Murray; best friends, Mackie MacDonald and Charlie Taylor. He will be deeply missed by his son, Rick (Rev. Laurie), Dutch Brook; his daughter, Dale (Darren Farkas), Toronto and his only grandchild, Ainsley MacCuish, Puerto de Sagunto, Spain. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, dear friend, Florence Taylor and her family and his friend, Norine MacIntyre. The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Greg Myatt for his outstanding care and his friendship with Fred through the years, Dr. Myatt’s nurse, Janice for her care and attentiveness, the VON for their years of home care, the medical staff of the CBRH and to Rev. Dana Feltmate, Fred truly enjoyed the laughter and unique friendship you shared and the many visits over the past number of months. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Laurie MacCuish officiating. Private interment at a later date. Diane Lynne MacPhail Born In: Glace Bay Born: April 9th, 1962 Passed in: Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Passed on: April 9th, 2016 Diane 'Bun' MacPhail, in her 53rd year, entered into God's loving embrace and received her wings on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. Diane worked for many years, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, on the Fourth Floor. She was absolutely adored by everyone! Diane was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Kennedy, both of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Diane became a special friend to everyone she met! Diane's vibrant spirit lives on in her devoted husband Barry; sisters, Mary (Lionel) MacIsaac, Ann (Alvin) Kimm, Sandra (James) Winstanley, and Kim Snow; brothers, Robert (Julie) Lahey, Thomas (Margaret) Kennedy Jr., Michael (Madonna) Kennedy and John (Donna) Kennedy, and many nephews, nieces and friends. Diane was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Mary Kennedy as well as her sister, Maude MacNeil. Diane will forever be missed! Heaven has been blessed with another beautiful angel.
