He was a true champion for those who had less. Every free weekend when his children were young, he packed up the camper and off the family went, rain or shine on adventures near and far. The highlight of family camping was a trip across the US and Canada. Later when his children were married, nothing gave him more pleasure than to sit at the head of table at family gatherings enjoying good food, telling stories, and ending the day with a fine cigar. Although he lived with Multiple Sclerosis for over 30 years, he never once complained. Never. He kept his spirits up and amazed everyone around him with his positive attitude. He will be missed by his dear friend and caregiver of over 26 years, Miguel Sanchez (Fitchburg, MA). He was an ordinary yet extraordinary man. He was a person whom everyone wanted to be around. His sense of humor, compassion and pride in his family help us understand that it is life’s small details and the connections and love we share that make a life great. On Saturday, September 30, 2017, a visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford St., Concord, MA. He leaves behind his loving wife, Judith Stephenson (MacKinlay); daughter, Karen Audette and husband, Steve (Concord, MA); son, Lloyd and wife, Christine (Springfield, VA), and son, Gary and wife, Cynthia (Concord, MA). He was the beloved grandfather to Gerald, Kenzie and Andre Audette, Craig, Lauren Epsosito, Colin, Duncan, Clark, and great-grandson, Tommy Audette. Born January 31, 1937 in Sydney, NS, Canada to Edward Allan Stephenson and Dorothy Stephenson (Gillis) he was one of ten children, brother to Robert ‘Bo’, Sheila Macleod, Barbara Meara, Donna Hasiuk. Predeceased by siblings, Eleanor MacQueen, Jean Campbell, Marion MacKeigan, John ‘Jack’ and Sandra. He was an energetic and curious child (read between the lines) and legends of his adventurous childhood amused his family over the years. Across the dance floor on May 18, 1956 Gillis spotted the love of his life, Judy and they danced. Even though they were married in June, it was May 18 that they celebrated. Few couples have a marriage as strong and as enduring. Their commitment and joy with each other was inspiring. Gillis built their home in Sydney while he worked for the Sydney-Louisbourg Railroad. In the early 1960s they emigrated to Concord, MA and he worked many years for the electronics firm GenRad. During this time Gillis shared his lifetime love of ice hockey by founding the Concord-Carlisle Youth Hockey program. He was a most encouraging coach and inspired countless young skaters. Many former players fondly remember him as their favorite coach. Gillis lived life to the fullest, loved a good joke, western movies (knew the dialogue by heart), cribbage, organizing parties and volleyball tournaments, dancing and ice skating (not in that order).

Born in Chéticamp, she was the daughter of the late Eddie Joe and Elizabeth Anne (Deveau) Chiasson. Although she had many accomplishments, one of mom’s proudest was her 50 years of service with Canada Post serving the wonderful folks of Petit Etang. Along with Dad, Mom also had a green thumb and a passion for gardening. She could “can” anything from green beans to grasshoppers. Being a very hard worker from a young age enabled her to raise her three girls while working from home at both the post office and family store. Regardless of the season, Mom’s day was never complete without a full clothesline of laundry hanging outside. She could remove any stain or mend any rip, no matter how impossible the task may seem. Although quiet, Mom had a gentle soul and would drop everything to help anyone in need. No one ever left our house empty-handed or hungry. She always had a treat to give you or a special something to take home. People came from near and far to savour her famous fudge and delicious biscuits. It was nothing for Mom to whip up a batch at anytime of the day. Her love for children extended beyond her own family and was evident by the numerous photos proudly displayed on her fridge door. We will fondly remember Mom for her witty sense of humour, her infectious smile and laughter, her love for crafting, her passion for cooking and baking, her nurturing heart and kindness to all. But mostly, we will remember Mom for her never-ending strength and courage towards any and all obstacles or challenges thrown her way. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Simon, her daughters, Brenda LeBlanc, Cindy (Michel Poirier) LeBlanc and Wanda (Jean Maurice) Chiasson; grandchildren, Jaron and Milaine; sisters, Thérèse (Joseph Arthur) AuCoin and Cecile Chiasson. She was predeceased by her sister, Nancy; brothers, Charlie and Bernie; and nephew Bernie. Visitation was held in Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was celebrated at l’Eglise St.-Pierre on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment in St. Peter’s cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of N.S. or to the Sacred Heart Hospital Charitable Foundation. Funeral was under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services. Kenneth’s first vehicle was a truck and it became his life passion, driving transport and starting Phillips trucking business. He loved country music and picked up the guitar and mouth organ from time to time. He was a gentle, kind soul and after he retired he spent his days around the shop and garage. Survived by his stepson Sheldon Routhledge, Fort McMurray, Alberta; brothers, Charles (Georgina), Gordon Phillips, Belle Côte, Wilson (Jessie) Phillips, Port Perry, Ontario; sisters, Violet (Don) Shaw, Grand Lake, Isabel (Pat) Roach, Pictou, NS; brother-in-law, Percy White, Belle Côte; also many nieces and nephews. She was the only daughter of Karl and Mary (Hajek) Chesal, both of Czechoslovakia, which prompted her to sometimes refer to herself as a Bogus Czech. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1923, settling in River Hebert where she grew up. After high school, her first job was at the Blue Bird Restaurant in Amherst. It was while she was working there that she met and fell in love with Stanley Hicks. My dad often told me that it was love at first sight. They were married January 20, 1943 in River Hebert. The following year they moved to Scotchtown, Cape Breton where they lived for 63 years. Besides being busy raising five children (born in a span of eight years), shopping for bargains to make ends meet, walking everywhere she went, she was active in the community and continuously learning new skills. She served as Vice President and Secretary for the Home and School Association and on the School Board all the years that her children attended Scotchtown Memorial School. During this time she learned shorthand and typing to assist with her assignments. She was an active member of Calvin United Church WA (Womens Association), and ran a Sunday School program in Scotchtown. She was on the executive of the New Waterford Handcraft Guild and crocheted hundreds of doilies, table cloths, sweaters and afghans.
