Larry was a devoted son to his late mother Elsie. He lived most of his life in Sydney and will be familiar to patrons of the Prince Street shopping mall and especially those who frequented the bowling alley there. A child of God, Larry was an innocent who trusted almost everyone he encountered and was always quick to offer his help in whatever he way he could. He spent his early years in Westmount where he learned his Latin responses to serve as an altar boy in Holy Rosary Church. In Westmount Larry formed a loving relationship with his favourite “Aunt Til” (Tillie Lewis), a relationship that lasted a lifetime. In Sydney in his later years he returned to living with his Mom where he was a happy and devoted son. Upon his mother’s passing Larry found it difficult to accept how his life was now changed. Larry wanted very much to stay in Cape Breton and was fortunate to live in the care of Walter and Bernice Burgess for over two years. Larry also enjoyed the support and kindness of close family friend Mary Jones. For the last three years Larry resided with his brother Jim Kaarto and wife Nancy in Dundas. Larry was comforted in his last hours by Jim and Nancy’s eldest daughter, Tina Catania, as the family took turns in their vigil. Cremation has taken place.

TREAT After a long and eventful life, Mary Lou Strassburger Treat, age 89, died peacefully at home in Putney, Vermont, in the U.S, on April 1st, 2017. An inveterate and adventuresome traveller, librarian, lifelong student, and citizen of the world, Mary Lou raised five children with her husband Bob while working, volunteering, and participating in the arts. Born August 1st, 1927, in Steubenville, Ohio, to Dorothy Dix Anglin and Julius Hersch Strassburger, Mary Lou attended schools in Steubenville, graduated from Connecticut College in 1949 with a B.A. in Economics and from Simmons College in 1974 with an M.L.S. After college, Mary Lou worked as assistant editor on the Engineering News Record with McGraw Hill Book Company in New York City for several years. In 1954 she married Robert Treat and in 1955 they moved to The Putney School in Vermont, where the educational philosophy of the founder, Carmelita Hinton, was to be an influence for the rest of their lives. While at Putney, Mary Lou enrolled in a photography class and practiced on her young and growing family. Photography was to be a lifelong passion and one for which she possessed a natural talent. Together, Bob and Mary Lou purchased land on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, in 1955 and built a house that became the center of her family’s summers. She forged long-term friendships within the local community, deepened her love for the natural world, and furthered her photography. She wrote, “During the summers on Cape Breton I photographed the last of the local people who were descendants of the original settlers in our area. It was a way of life that was not to survive much longer.” Mary Lou and Bob carried out their commitment to conservation and the environment by protecting the land and public access to it through the Nova Scotia Nature Trust so that the land could be enjoyed in perpetuity without development. Mary Lou worked for peace and human rights all her adult life. In 1964 she and Bob traveled to Alabama to participate in the Civil Rights March. In Mary Lou’s words, “Helping others and fighting racial inequality was always a big concern. A highlight of my life was being part of the march from Selma to Montgomery during the civil rights era.” After nine years at Putney, Bob and Mary Lou moved to the Barlow School in New York where Bob became headmaster and Mary Lou was librarian. There, she oversaw the design and construction of an award-winning library, a challenge she would undertake again as Head of Libraries at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts with the construction of the new Dolben Library. Mary Lou served on the National Association of Independent Schools.
