A long standing United Church and UCW member and a kind and loving person who worked tirelessly for her family, friends, and community, she was happiest doing for others. Many, who enjoyed her good food, her special wit, and unique wisdom, will remember her strength of character and miss the colour she added to their lives. Effie was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Charles Hussey (2009); her daughter, Mary Ryan and sons-in-law, Joseph Ryan and K. Wayne MacLean. She is survived by her brother, Archie Kerr; daughters, Beverley MacRae (Martin), Evelyn MacLellan, Audrey MacLean and son, Arnold (Anne); grandchildren, Donna MacRae, Louanne MacRae, Kevin MacRae, Nancy Ryan, Ron MacLellan, Dale MacLellan, Joanne Hussey, Laura Bondt, Nicholas Hussey, Matthew MacLean, Aaron MacLean, Alexandra MacLean, and thirteen great-grandchildren. Born on March 19, 1940, Betty was the daughter of the late Cornelius Sampson and Helen Marie (Courage) (Sampson) Parago. Betty was a devoted member of the Royal Purple Lodge and the first lady in Canada to become a member of the Elks Lodge when both lodges joined. Betty is survived by her son, Rick, (Faye) Chipman, Hilton Beach, ON; daughter, Rosemarie (Frank) Kober, Grafton, ON; grandchildren, Christopher (Alexandra) Burke, Ingersol, ON, and Katelyn Burke, Halifax, NS; sisters, Helen Dixon, Pat Parago, both from Sydney and brother, Edmond Sampson, Brantford ON. Born in Alder Point on September 18, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Mary LeBlanc. Eunice will be remembered for her infectious laugh, quick wit, and her compassionate and caring ways. She was an avid bowler until the age of 88 and she knew how to cut a rug. She also loved a good game of cards and any family gathering that took place. For many years she worked outside the home as a independent cleaner, until accepting a position at Alder Point Elementary School as custodian. She was the life of the school yard for many children. On any occasion she could be seen playing hopscotch, jump rope, baseball and showing off her juggling skills until her retirement. She was active member of the Blessing of the Fleet committee in Alder Point for 63 years. She was a devout catholic of St. Anne Church Parish. Eunice lived at home until her brief illness.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Abraham Morgan and late Molly Morgan. Buddy worked as a coal miner for over 35 years. He enjoyed playing cribbage and tinkering in the garage on small engines. He was an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan and a loyal Cape Breton Oiler and a Screaming Eagles season ticket holder for 30 years. He was a great fan of the Glace Bay Miner and Panthers. He was known to many of the young players as “Papa” Buddy is survived by his loving wife, Betty; daughters, Darlene MacDonald (Kevin), and Kathy Morgan. Born on May 7, 1963 in Sydney, Michael was the son of Raymond and Frances ‘Fa’ (McCormick) MacIsaac. Michael loved to listen to music and loved to play cards. He also enjoyed a good game of pool with family members. Michael worked at the Horizon Achievement Centre for over 30 years, retiring this past February. In his younger years, Michael participated in the Special Olympics. Besides his parents, Michael will be sadly missed by his siblings, Raylene (Brian) Webber, Dartmouth, and James, South Bar. Michael was a proud uncle to his niece and nephews, Stephanie, Jordan and Coady Webber, who will miss him dearly. The family appreciates the quality and care provided to Michael at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital A Memorial Mass in memory of the late Michael Joseph MacIsaac will be at a later date. Calgary Herald/Sun August 18, 2017 Friday Catherine (Cathy) Anne MacLean MacLEAN, Catherine (Cathy) Anne - January 14, 1959 - August 15, 2017 Cathy was born in Whitehorse, Yukon and moved to Calgary in 1966 with her family when she was a young girl. Cathy then followed in the footsteps of her sisters and moved to Vancouver where she started and raised her family. In 2004 she returned home to Calgary. Cathy is survived by her three sons: Michael Reddy (Michelle), Tony Schelfaut (Jem), and Rick Schelfaut and their father John Schelfaut; her mother Ruth MacLean; sisters: Donna MacLean, Carol MacLean, Christina Roberts, and Mary (Mike) Jefferies; brother David (Belinda) MacLean as well as her pride and joy, grandson Kjel. Cathy is also survived by her partner Guy and the Wingerter family. She had numerous nieces and nephews and cousins who will miss her dearly. Cathy was predeceased by her father Donald Laird MacLean in 1980. Cathy was a gentle, kind soul. She spent many years as a Nanny and was always proud of her “kids” whom she kept close to her heart. Ralph was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Black Watch. He was a member of the Canadian Military until retirement. During his working career, he was employed at Canada Packers, Sydney. His joys in life were hockey, horse racing, traveling the world and his little friend, Cuddles Ralph is survived by his brothers, Carl, Donnie and Fred and sisters, Evelyn, Frances, Beverly and Hazel. He was predeceased by his brothers, Earl, Roy, Bobby and Billie and sisters, Dorothy, Minnie and Shirley. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. There will be no visitation by request. Interment will take place at a later date. The family would like to acknowledge the phenomenal care he was provided by his best friend and caregiver, Gerry Smith of Glace Bay over the last eight years or so. Born October 27, 1945, he was the son of the late D. Keith and Catherine (Nicholson) Ervin. Dave attended Riverview Rural High School and was a graduate of Cape Breton University. In his early years, he was a member of the Canadian Air Force, but returned to Cape Breton, where he was employed at Sydney Steel until his retirement. He was a proud member of the Steelworker’s Union and was president for a number of years. As a founding member of ACAP, Dave enjoyed many years on the executive and also served on many community boards and associations over the years. Dave is survived by his sisters, Linda (Brennan) Sheppard, Bucklaw and Gail (Robert) Muir, Groves Point. He had nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly. He was blessed with many good friends and neighbours, especially best friend, Bernie LaRusic. Bernie was always there for him like a brother. Dave had many opinions and was willing to share them. He loved to read and had an unbelievable memory. He also enjoyed local musicians and their music. Dave recently donated most of his books to local libraries. He had an avid interest in politics at all levels and, in particular, was an NDP supporter.

Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Tom and step sisters Mary-Emma and Millie; step brothers Pat and John Joe and a brother in-infancy. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating followed by a luncheon at the parish hall, Covent Street, all are welcome.Donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice. Fraser was the son of the late Angus and Jeanette MacLean. Born and lived in Donkin, CB all of his life, he was an active member of St. Luke’s United Church and a member of their choir from his 16th year until his death. He was a member of the Donkin Citizen’s Brass Band from the time he was 12 years old to his demise. Fraser was retired from N.S. Power where he worked for 37 years. Fraser enjoyed all kinds of music, played the accordion, sang with several musical groups and at one time was the director of a male chorus. He was an avid golfer, liked to garden and was a general handyman. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; sons, Kevin, Scott and Glen; daughter, Louise and their respective partners; several grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Fraser was predeceased by brothers, William, Archie, Stan, Jim and sister, Agnes. He was the last surviving member of his family. Proud of her roots in Cape Breton and being born into a large and loving family, she was equally proud of the large family she and Wells raised. She truly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a real lady and opened her door to anyone and everyone. She loved her garden and spent many summer days there. She enjoyed traveling with Wells on her many trips to Europe, various places across the U.S. and the Caribbean. Maisie was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Annie Andrews; husband, Wells; daughter, Marilyn (John) McKinney; grandson, Wells McKinney, and granddaughter, Gillian Connors. She will be deeply missed by her brother, Earl; sister, Jeannette; sons, Raymond (Pat), David, Greg (Mary), Richard (Debbie), and daughter, Gloria (Neil) Connors; grandchildren, Darin, Tim (Jennifer), Chris (Margriet), Sean, Matthew (Beth), Kathleen, Andrew, Jonathan, Jennifer (Ritchie) Demmings, Eric (Lora) McKinney, June (Derek) Pleadwell and Joy (Carter) Belyea, and 21 great grandchildren. He grew up largely in Tarbot, and was at his happiest there, surrounded by those he loved most. Left to mourn are, his parents, Lena Morrison and Mike Kearney; his siblings, Jason (Twyla) Keigan, Tony (Jessica) Morrison, Kailea Morrison and Maggie Morrison, also, David Latter, and Mark Kearney, as well as his nephews and niece, Jay Jay and Marcella Keigan, Brent Morrison and Colton Donovan. Thoma was a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew and grandson and will be remembered by his surviving grandmother, Kathryne Kearney, as well as many uncles, cousins and extended family. He also leaves behind his faithful companions, Jake, Coco, Waffle and Skittles. Thoma was pre-deceased by his maternal grandparents, Claude and Peggy Morrison; his aunt, Maisie Morrison; cousin, Lisa Mac Donald, and close friend and cousin, Cory Keigan. Visitation will take place at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, North River, from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday August 19, followed immediately by a service at 3 p.m. with Reverend Corrie Stewart officiating. James was born in New Waterford and was the son of Phill and the late Jerry Hennessy. James had a 35 year career as a Union Ironworker, in Locals 752 Halifax and 720 Edmonton. He was a hardworking family man. He was a handyman to say the least and loved working in his yard in Mira. He always had a grin on and would love to torment and make everyone laugh. He always loved his Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. He is survived by his wife, Cathy (MacNeil), who he spent 36+ years with having wonderful adventures together since their teens. Survived by his son, Jamie, who he was so proud of, his wife, Alex and his two beautiful grand babies, Kaenen and Nolah, who he idolized; his daughter, Aimee, who will always be Daddy’s girl, all of Alberta; his brothers, Ronnie (Mary), Scotchtown, Gerald, Mira, Vernon, New Waterford and John (Monie), New Victoria; his sisters, Ann, New Waterford, Lois (Wayne), Glace Bay and Karen (Cory), New Glasgow; his mother-in-law, Marie Aitken, Mira; brothers-in-law, Ray (Barb), Scotchtown and Gordie (Kathleen), Sydney; sister-in-law, Elaine (Charlie), Mira; his brother-in-law, Mike (Karen) MacLeod; sister-in-law, Laura, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his two best friends, The Big Fellas, Frank Doran and Barry McCulloch. He was predeceased by his father, Jerry; his sister, Donna MacLeod; his brother, Kevin, and his brother-in-law, Freddy Duprey. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service for James will be held on August 21, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 102 Trout Brook Rd., Marion Bridge with Fr Everett McDow officiating. The family would like to welcome friends and family after the Mass for a celebration luncheon. The family asks for no flowers, and as token to James, pay it forward to someone or do something generous and kind in his memory.
