LLEWELLYN THOMAS FIANDER Born In: SYDNEY MINES, Nova Scotia Born: June 2nd, 1938 Passed on: September 11th, 2017 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, brother, grandfather, step-father, step-grandfather, step great-grandfather and friend, Llewellyn Thomas Fiander on Monday, September 11, 2017, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney Mines on June 2, 1938, he was the only son of the late Llewellyn and Lillian (Way) Fiander. Known by his business colleagues and later in life by “Lew”, growing up and as a young man his family and friends referred to him as “Lewie”, which always made him smile. Lew had a dedicated career in finance as the General Manager of the New Waterford Credit Union, serving the people of the community and later advocating as a member of the Board of Directors at North Sydney. He had a passion for sports and was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Red Wings and the Dodgers; both in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. The love of the game came naturally. With the guidance of his uncle, he started playing baseball and hockey at a young age and photos often showed him sporting a jersey. Later, he was proud to coach many young men on the Northside and continue to be part of the action. He was an enthusiastic storyteller; telling tales that entertained and made us laugh in the moment and for many years following. Throughout years and distance his most cherished moments were with his family. Reviewing the scores, teaching us about business, looking at pictures, and sharing his most valued possessions; passing them on to bring pleasure for years to come. But by far, one of his greatest pleasures was spending time with his grandsons. ‘Papa’ had a positive influence on their lives by devoting time and support. He was delighted when they chose to play sports or pursue a career in business and was very proud of the young men they’ve become. He had a great appreciation for both history and current events and had the privilege to travel to many parts of the world. Most recently those travels included Western Europe, where he enjoyed the culture, music and beauty of the countries and to Los Angeles to see his beloved Dodgers play their greatest rival; the San Francisco Giants. He beamed like a child during those games, and said it was a dream come true to be there in person. His kindness, guidance and support as the patriarch of our family will be forever treasured. He was proud to be a 3rd degree knight of Santa Maria Council 2024 Knights of Columbus, Sydney Mines, a 4th degree knight of the Fr. William B. MacLeod Assembly, Sydney, a chartered member of the Kinsmen Club, and a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Bras d’Or. Lew is survived by his wife, Joan (LeBlanc); three daughters, Debbie (Reg) Cantwell, Wendy (Barry Stephenson) Fiander, Susan (Mike) Samson; three grandchildren, Nathan, Andrew and Samuel; sister, Georgene Fiander (niece Kiera MacCormick); uncle, Reverend Russell Way; stepchildren and families, Denise (Steve & Brian) MacDonald, Brian (Linda, Sarah (Duncan Strathearn), Erik (Elaina & Fynnley) LeBlanc; sisters-in-law, Rita MacRae, Yvonne Farnsworth; brothers-in-law, Bryan (Geraldine) Cullen, Jim (Marguerite) Cullen, Rene (Ann) Patry; many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Besides his parents, Lew was predeceased by his devoted wife of 36 years, Edna (Cullen) Fiander; a special niece, Carol Ann Guy; sister-in-law, Teresa (Lovie) Pyke; brothers-in-law, John MacCormick, Maurice Pyke, Carl MacRae and Cliff Farnsworth. Special thanks to the Northside General Hospital 4West Nursing staff, with special mention to Tracy and Taylor. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass to celebrate “Lewie’s” life will take place Friday, September 15, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Father Peter McLeod officiating. He will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Cape Breton University Nursing Department, supporting the future of great nurses who have had such an impact on his life. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. EXTRA - Former federal cabinet minister from Cape Breton Allan J. MacEachen dies at age 96 ©Submitted by Owen Fitzgerald OTTAWA – Allan J. MacEachen, a driving force behind Canadian social policy changes of two Liberal governments, has died at the age of the 96. MacEachen was one of Canada's most powerful cabinet ministers of the postwar era and held a variety of posts, including a term as minister of national health and welfare from 1965-1968 during the creation of medicare. As labour minister, MacEachen was also instrumental in reforming the labour code and establishing a new standard for the minimum wage. His other portfolios also included finance and he twice served as Secretary of State for External Affairs. Bob Rae, a friend and former Liberal MP, said in an interview that MacEachen – who spoke fluent Gaelic – was deeply dedicated to the small communities of Cape Breton, yet was equally at home in the halls of power and in Parliament. "He was the architect of the major social policy changes that took place in Canada in the mid 1960s,'' said Rae, who once faced MacEachen as an NDP critic and later gained his support in his 2006 bid for leadership of the party. He describes MacEachen as both a left-leaning Liberal who was influenced by the co-operative movement founded by Rev. Moses Coady in Antigonish, N.S., while also being a political pragmatist who knew how to turn theory into reality. His handling of key legislation under both the Liberal governments of Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau was critical, and MacEachen's skill as a parliamentarian also helped defeat former Tory prime minister Joe Clark in a non-confidence motion. "He more than anyone was responsible for the return of Mr. Trudeau to power in 1980. He did some extraordinary things,'' said Rae. "He was the greatest parliamentarian of our generation, certainly of the last half century.’' David Dingwall, who was also an MP from Cape Breton Island and health minister in Jean Chretien's government, said that MacEachen served as a key mentor to many politicians. He recalled him coming to his office frequently when he was leader of the Senate, sharing dark tea and biscuits and dispensing advice. "He was a great listener, a man who could probe you with great questions and do it with easy and who resolve was unshakable. ... I shall miss him. He was a Canadian icon,'' he said. Born in Inverness on Cape Breton Island in 1921, MacEachen was first elected in 1953 in Nova Scotia's Inverness-Richmond riding under Liberal prime minister Louis St. Laurent. He was the son of a coal miner, MacEachen won again in 1957, but lost his seat in 1958 before winning eight more elections, including the last five while representing Cape Breton-Highlands Canso. He also served as deputy prime minister and was appointed to the Senate in 1984 where he remained until 1996. MacEachen, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for the leadership of the Liberal Party in 1968, was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2008. – Story by Michael Tutton in Halifax.

Marcel Paul Fred Gaudet Born: September 27th, 1950 Passed on: September 9th, 2017 It is with sorrow and heartbreak that we announce the sudden passing of Marcel Gaudet, age 67, on Saturday, September 9, 2017, in his sleep. Born in Halifax on September 27, 1950, Marcel found his heart's home in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, birthplace of his soul mate and lifelong love Diane, and his cherished daughters Hillary and Mallory. No one could be more devoted to his family than Marcel. He loved them totally and committed completely to providing for their comfort and well-being. Everyone who knew Marcel, whether from his many years working at Foodland, or simply from his presence in the community, loved him and marveled at his kind and generous nature. Like his dear mother Theresa before him, he never spoke an unkind word about anyone. He saw the good in all. What he brought to us also was his warm and mischievous smile that was well suited to his quick wit and the playful teasing way he had with people. He was a fun-loving, giving person and his "girls" at work particularly loved him for being their guy; a steady, dependable man, a joy to be around. The men too will miss him for he was also a guy's guy. In fact, Foodland is shutting down during Marcel's funeral in order that all staff will be free to attend. You may note that things will be quieter now at Nora's New to You where Mar went almost daily in order to maintain the high fashion standard he set for Sydney Mines. Marcel is survived by his loving wife, Diane (Tobin); daughters, Hillary and Mallory; very special sister-in-law, Marlene Tobin (Thunder Bay); brother-in law, Wayne Tobin (Donna), Sydney Mines; nieces and nephews, Andrew Tobin, Halifax, Aaron Gaudet, Halifax, Michelle Berlinsky, Port Alberney, BC, and nieces, Megan, Victoria and Vanessa Tobin; sisters, Deborah (Kent Baker), Halifax, Cathy (Frank Dempster), Timberlea, and Lucille Gaudet, Dartmouth. Marcel was predeceased by his father, Marcellin; his mother, Theresa; brother, Ronald; two infant babies, Faith and Jared; father-in-law, Cyril Tobin; mother-in-law, Shirley Tobin, and brothers-in-law, Keith and Elmer Tobin. Because of Marcel's love for all animals, his family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the SPCA or to an animal shelter of your choice. They also recommend that you consider supporting the Canadian Heart Association. Visitation for Marcel Gaudet will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Joseph Gregory ‘Greg’ Burke Passed on: September 8th, 2017 Joseph Gregory ‘Greg’ Burke, 58, of Halifax, passed away September 8, 2017 in Halifax. Born in Sydney, Greg was the only son of Katherine and Joseph Burke. Whether it was cooking, gardening, spending time with his family, or working as a civil engineer, Greg lived life to the fullest; doing all the things he loved. Family dinners on Sundays were among his favourite pastimes, where his family would gather to reconnect at the end of the week. He loved to travel the world with his beloved wife, Kristine Ruhloff. His devotion to his daughters, Ashley and Riley was unparalleled, and that love was extended to his stepchildren; he beamed with pride at the mention of Shelby and Kristian, whom he loved dearly. Ryder, the family dog, who unexpectedly stole his heart, was as devoted to Greg as Greg was to him. Ryder, in turn, often stole Greg's side of the bed. Greg was fearless in his short battle with cancer, fighting with the strength of a warrior. Greg's personal success was matched in spades by his professional accomplishments - he was a well-respected civil engineer who began his career as with Satellite Construction. He also served as president of the Nova Scotia Road Builders Association in 1997. He, then, worked with Dexter Construction, and in 2008, joined McNally Inc. His passion for his job was recognized in 2012 when Greg was named Vice President, Marine Operations for McNally. His family will host a Celebration of Life on Friday, September 15, 2017 in the Kenneth C. Rowe Hall at Pier 21 in Halifax from 1-4 p.m. Please share your favourite memory of Greg with his family by sending an email to memoriesofgregburke@gmail.com <mailto:memoriesofgregburke@gmail.com>. Vlasta Mildred Chesal Born: April 10th, 1923 Passed on: September 7th, 2017 With heavy hearts we announce the death of our cherished and beloved Mom, Vlasta Mildred Chesal, on September 7, 2017, who passed away at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital at the age of 94. Vlasta was born April 10, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes Danda in Zilina, Czechoslovakia, where she spent her early childhood and youth. At the age of 14, she went to work in the nearby city of Kladno where she worked at Jungr’s Butcher Shop. Here she met and fell in love with our Dad, Tony Chesal. Together they endured and survived World War II, married on April 2, 1944 and had two children before departing her beloved country and family to come to Canada in 1947. Traveling via bus, train and ship with a two-year old daughter and a two month old son, violently sea sick, with no understanding of the English language, our brave Mom settled into her new life in Scotchtown, Cape Breton. Here they resided for 41 years and lovingly raised their six children. Vlasta worked alongside her husband during the years they owned the Scotchtown Lucky Dollar Store but her main focus and joy was always her children. Known for her delicious meals and baked goods, she was also an avid gardener and had our Ryan Street yard looking like a park with her lovely flowers. She created many handmade crocheted, knitted and needlepoint items that will remain cherished by her family. Vlasta and Tony moved to Antigonish in 1988 where they remained the hub of their ever expanding family. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2014, just a few months before the loss of the love of her life at the age of 92. We will always remember Vlasta’s beautiful welcoming smile. She was brimming with love for all her family and took great joy in the accomplishments of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Anyone whoever entered her home will remember her warm welcome and never ending offers of food. She was a joy to be around and even in her later years was very up- to -date with current affairs, anything concerning the Royal family, and dancing and talent programs on TV. She loved to play the marble board game designed by our father and even though she refused to “knock out” her grandchildren, always somehow managed to win. Our Mom was surrounded by love from all her family during her last weeks in hospital and even got to share FaceTime with relatives and friends in her home country. She passed peacefully into the arms of our Dad where they are now dancing together once again, probably to their favorite tune ‘La Paloma’. Vlasta is survived and greatly loved by her children, Marie (Barry), Seabright, NS, Joe, Antigonish, NS, Tony (Ellen), Fall River, NS, Carl (Janet), Stittsville, ON, Stanley (Celeste), Masstown, NS and Jane, Bedford, NS; grandchildren, Leeann St. Clair, Pam, Eddie and Patricia Chesal, Ian Chesal and Sharon Marie Toye, Jason and Trevor Chesal, and Tracy Wells, David, Steven and Nathan Hall, also thirteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Vlasta was predeceased by her parents, Agnes and Joseph Danda; brother, Vlada, and sister, Vera in the Czech Republic. A strong connection to her birth country will remain through the next generation of the many relatives and friends whose hearts our Mom touched during her incredible lifetime. Our sincere thanks to all those who gave Mom the BEST of care during her time at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital; Drs. Hickey, Cooper and Steeves. Also, thank you to the nursing staff, LPN’s, CCA’s, and custodial staff on third floor, and those who took the time to be so kind and comforting to our Mom in those last three weeks. There will be NO visitation. Family ONLY viewing on Tuesday, September 12. Funeral Mass and celebration of Vlasta’s life on Thursday, September 14 at 2 p.m. at St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Rev. Donald MacGillivray presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Vlasta’s name to the St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation, the V.O.N, or to a charity of one’s choice. Upon completing studies at Vocational School he worked as a lineman with Nova Scotia Power for 35 years, where he made many lasting friendships. Philip enjoyed spending time every summer in Margaree at Whale Cove Summer Village with his wife's extended family. Philip started his morning with a big cup of coffee and his favorite word puzzle, the target, in the Chronicle Herald. From there, he moved onto the sudoku and to any crossword puzzle he could get a hold of. He had a great love of reading and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. After retiring he enjoyed various pursuits and particularly loved to spend time outdoors constructing outbuildings, gardening, and doing general maintenance around the yard, as he took great pride in its appearance. Robert Pond Born In: Newton, Massachusetts, United States Born: February 8th, 2017 Passed in: Anchorage, Alaska, United States Passed on: July 29th, 2017 ROBERT POND 1937-2017 “Because of Bob Pond, I performed on stage for the first time. Because of Bob Pond, I became an actor. Because of Bob Pond, I became a better actor. Because of Bob Pond, I became a director.” Robert "Bobby" Pond, son of Agnes MacNeil Pond, and nephew to John Patrick MacNeil and Rhodena MacNeil, of Cape Breton Island, passed away on July 29, 2017. Because of his contributions, Anchorage theatre is rich with more than 50 years of home-grown talent and theatrical opportunity. Born on February 8, 1937 in a working-class Boston neighborhood, the only son of a factory worker, Bob developed an early interest in opera and singing. Even with finances tight, his mother purchased a piano, and paid for voice lessons. In high school, he studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. During his military service, he continued to pursue his passion for singing and acting. His transfer to Anchorage in 1957 began a lifelong relationship with Anchorage’s theatre community, starting with Frank Brink, the Anchorage Little Theatre, and the role of the clerk in Witness for the Prosecution. At the end of his service in 1959, he followed the acting dream and moved to New York City. Performing a summer season in Woodstock, he earned his Actor’s Equity card (he also became a member of Screen Actors Guild later in life). The Metropolitan Opera hired him as a supernumerary actor for 17 operas. Bob found his way back to Alaska in 1961, with a job as a state surveyor. He renewed his bond with the renamed Anchorage Community Theatre and its now Managing Artistic Director, Frank Brink. Bob was in the theatre preparing for a performance of Our Town at APU’s Grant Hall theatre when the 1964 earthquake hit. In spite of the chaos, Bob and the cast decided to perform the next day. Bob became Anchorage Community Theatre's Artistic Director and for 42 years led the growth of the city's longest running theatre company. Using theatre to build community is one of Bob Pond’s enduring trademarks. His desire to build an even better theatre and a stronger community led him to earn a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Alaska Anchorage and a Master of Arts in Theatre from Portland State University, and later in life returning for a second Bachelor’s at UAA in Education. Bob lost his beloved wife, Roberta Lee Evatt, in 2012 after 43 years of marriage. He is survived by their two children, Teresa Kathleen Pond (also a Theatre Director and producer) and Sean-Michael Christopher Pond.

He is survived by children, Alan (Irene), Kirsty and Iain; grandchildren, Evan and Kailey; his first wife, Fiona (Grant) MacPherson, all of Toronto. John Alick is also survived by his second wife, Helen (Campbell) MacPherson, Marion Bridge. He also leaves to mourn his sister-in-law, Lexena Campbell; brothers-in-law, John C. Campbell (Dolores Campbell), Donald L. Campbell, Stanley D. Campbell (Margaret Cash), Brian A. Campbell, Sylvia (the late Peter) Campbell, and many close cousins and friends. John Alick spent the first five years of his life in Leverburgh, Harris, then moved with his parents to Goular, North Uist. They lived, at first, with John’s paternal grandmother, before acquiring the house nearby, which would be the family home until the death of his parents. Like many Hebridean children of his era, he had to leave home at age 14 to complete his schooling, since no secondary school existed then in the Southern Western Isles. He went to Portree High School in Skye, which left him with many good memories. He went on to Edinburgh University for a degree in Celtic Studies and later, a teaching qualification from Jordanhill College of Education. He returned to Uist to teach school for a number of years in Paible School, before going to Glasgow and a position with the BBC Gaelic service, an experience which provided a lifetime of memories and a circle of friends who remained forever close, as well as gaining him recognition and admiration in the Gaelic community for his consummate bilingual skills, his well-crafted turn of phrase and his measured delivery on air. In 1961, he was crowned Bàrd at the An Comunn Gàidhealach annual Mod in Stirling, an occasion that combined solemnity with hilarity. True to form, he refused to wear the kilt, arguing that his lack of physical stature would have brought ridicule on himself and An Comunn if he wore it – a point reinforced by the fact that they had to shorten the bardic gown he was to wear. There was no argument, however, about the fact that, though short of stature in his gown, his intellect well filled the bardic crown. He was to go on to demonstrate his literary skills in poetry and prose of various forms and to be a popular platform speaker on many occasions, as well as a delightful companion in informal settings. A second career began in 1972, when he accepted a job with Atomic Energy of Canada, a prestigious pioneer in the nuclear energy industry. He was posted as information officer for this Crown Corporation to Glace Bay, in Cape Breton, where the company was building a heavy water plant. His arrival in Cape Breton coincided with the efforts of An Comunn Gaidhlig Cheap Breatuinn by a group of native speakers and learners determined to revive the language of their ancestors. His contribution to the cause came quickly and effectively, building on the group’s efforts to strengthen ties with the old country by way of introducing Gaelic in schools and mounting the first large scale visit to the Hebrides by descendants of the first settlers. John Alick’s support for the Gaelic Society initiative was a key to its success and opened a long break in communications between the Hebrides and Cape Breton. It was soon followed by the recruiting of Gaelic teachers from Scotland and a boost to the efforts of the Beaton Institute to preserve the music, language and dance of the Gaels. He stayed with AECL for many years, working in various capacities in Mississauga, Ottawa, Toronto and finally, in Chalk River, historic site of the original AECL plant from the 1940’s. He represented Canada in many international nuclear gatherings in China, Vienna, Korea, the United States, France, etc. His contributions were always received with respect. During his years in Scotland, his experience in the nuclear field led him to be appointed to the UKAEA, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority board. In his initial ‘retirement’ year, he was offered the job of managing information services for the Ottawa Civic Hospital during the consolidation of the three main hospitals in Ottawa, which kept him busy during a twelve month contract. Another unexpected, but welcome opportunity, came in 1997, when he was hired in Scotland by the Comataidh Craolaidh Gaidhlig, Gaelic Broadcasting Committee, as its deputy director. In this capacity, he contributed greatly to the shaping and development of the expansion and growth of Gaelic television, radio and education and never lost interest in the growth of Gaelic media culture, including the creation of BBC Alba, the Gaelic TV channel. At the invitation of the minister for Gaelic in the Scottish Government, Alasdair Morrison, he chaired a committee of experts and authored an influential report with recommendations for the future development of Gaelic. One of the projects he took special pride in was the high school debates conducted in Gaelic, the idea for which grew from a conversation between himself, Alasdair Morrison and Donald (Ruadh) MacLean, chairman of the Development Services Committee of the Local Authority Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. The lively and popular debates grew to attract students from all over Scotland and are now held in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and broadcast nationally. At times, he seemed to be everywhere, never saying ‘no’ to an opportunity or a challenge. From Rhenigidale in his beloved island of Harris (with which he shared an equally faithful love of North Uist), he travelled many miles, always displaying his seemingly boundless energy. Among his appointments, he was on the boards of Caledonia MacBrayne, Acair publishing, the Celtic Media Festival, Comhairle Nan Leabhraichean and Assynt Film Limited. Originally designed to last for three years, the CCG job stretched to nine at the end of which, John Alick decided on a return to Cape Breton and a home on the Mira River in a district where many of the residents are descended from the pioneers from North Uist and from where he continued his interest in Gaelic. He managed this through his board membership of the Gaelic College at St. Anne’s, a deep interest in activities at the Beaton archives at CBU, collaboration on writing and publishing with Mike Hunter of Cape Breton University Press and Professor Michael Linkletter of St. F.X. University. He was also an active, hands-on president of the Atlantic Gaelic Academy, an on-line Gaelic course, which attracts students from many countries. He also enjoyed his participation in the Mira Gaelic Choir and teaching a Gaelic class held at the local church hall. One of the three books he completed was a memoir, an interesting account of his life and hailed by readers as an outstanding example of Gaelic writing. He collaborated with Michael Linkletter in writing Fògradh, Fàisneachd, Filidheachd (Parting, Prophecy, Poetry), which also got good reviews. His final work was translating Gaelic letters to the Cape Breton Gaelic newspaper MacTalla from John Munro, who left St. Anne’s, Cape Breton to live in Waipu, New Zealand, where the followers of Rev. Norman MacLeod had settled in the 19th Century. The book was recently published by Bev Brett, who discovered the letters in the archives at the Beaton Institute at CBU. There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held at St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Marion Bridge on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Lydia MacKinnon officiating. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery. Crowdis With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth Ivan Crowdis, beloved husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather. At the age of 63, the long-time Sydney River resident succumbed to complications from a sudden heart attack at the QE II Health Sciences Halifax Infirmary on August 28, 2017. A graduate of Saint Francis-Xavier University, where he studied science and physical education, Kenneth worked as a automotive mechanic in the family business, Crowdis Auto Service, alongside his father for many years before moving on to Ramsay’s Cycle and Sport and then FrameWork Cycle and Fitness, where his passion for cycling and expert mechanical knowledge helped others enjoy the sport. Ken was a life-long athlete who enjoyed playing hockey, skiing, and snow shoeing among innumerable other sports, although he was happiest cycling through the Margarees or around the Sydney area; he enjoyed the company of his fellow cyclists whom he joined weekly throughout all seasons. He was an avid outdoorsman who maintained a great respect for nature and enjoyed hiking, hunting, and fishing, including fly fishing on the Margaree and Cheticamp Rivers, and was involved in various sporting and outdoors groups such as the Metro Rifle and Pistol Club, where he previously served as treasurer, and the Cape Breton Anglers Association. Above all else, Kenneth was dedicated to his family. He and Sylvia enjoyed spending time in East Margaree in the LeBlanc family home which they recently renovated. He looked forward to visits with his precious daughter and his little grandson, who enjoyed entertaining and playing with his Poppie. Kenneth will be remembered as a loyal friend who readily lent a helping hand, as a kind, quiet, and caring man with a strong sense of duty as well as a quick wit who could laugh at life’s absurdities. He had a rare integrity and strength of character as well as a keen protectiveness toward those he loved that made them feel safe and reassured in his presence. He was aware that life was fragile and our time on earth could be short and strove to make each day count. The way he lived his life is a model for those he left behind and the memories he created with those who had the good fortune of knowing him will keep him alive in our hearts for eternity. He is predeceased by his sister, Jennifer Lynn; brother, Allan Timothy; and his mother, Rubena (Thorne) Crowdis. He leaves to mourn his treasured wife of 39 years Sylvia (LeBlanc); his father, Ivan Crowdis; brothers Todd (Marg) of Sydney River and William (Lynette and niece Maclean) Crowdis of Halifax; as well as daughter Suzanne, son-in-law Paul, and cherished grandson, Ephraim Kenneth (Ottawa). She passed away peacefully in Inverness Hospital, with her loving husband next to her and her family by her side. Born in Margaree on January 5th, 1941, the daughter of George W and Linden (Latter) Crowdis. Laura will be sadly missed by her soulmate and loving husband of 56 years, Malcolm (Bud) Fraser; her children, Shelagh (Joey), Baddeck; Angela (Mark), Margaree Valley; Scott, Halifax; her beloved grandchildren, whom she adored and loved and they thought she was the best grandma around: Jacob, Crowdis, Michaela, Chloe, Luke, Noah, and Matthew; her brothers Raymond (Qui), Saint John, NB; Franklin (Wilfridine), Margaree Valley; Sheldon, Okotoks, Alberta; her Fraser in-laws and many nieces and nephews who thought the world of her. She also leaves behind her “Extended Musical Jam Family” who became wonderful and caring friends. Laura was the hardest worker we knew and there was nothing she couldn’t do. She was a jack-of-all-trades and throughout her lifetime held too many different jobs to mention. She embraced life to the fullest, was very active in her community, always lending a helping hand to those in need. Through the years Laura served on The Home and School Committee, was president of the Margaree Salmon Association, served on Wilson United Church Board, an Eastern Star Member, started the Music Jam Sessions at Wilson Church Hall, and served on many other committees and organizations. In the later years Laura and Bud traveled around Cape Breton to all the Music Jams, with Bud playing and yodelling. We always referred to Mom as Dad’s “Stage Manager”. The teapot was always on and she always had fresh baked goods to serve with the tea; everyone was made to feel welcome in their home. Even, right up until Laura went to the hospital, our home was filled with family, friends, love, and laughter and of course the teapot was on. She always made you feel loved. Laura had many hobbies; stain glass, ceramics, decorating wedding cakes, gardening, tying salmon flies, oil painting, and preserving. Christmas at home was a Magical Time which we will miss. Laura had too many wonderful qualities to mention; but, our favourites were her generosity, love, sense of humour, work ethics, and her dedication to our Dad; as his caregiver, to the very end. Laura, we will miss you immensely, there will be a void in our hearts and home; but, we celebrate your life knowing you are home with the Lord and a new chapter begins. Visitation with the family was held at Wilson United Church Hall, Margaree Centre on Sunday, Sept. 3rd. Celebration of Life Service was on Monday, Sept. 4th at Wilson United Church, Margaree Centre with Rev. Alicia Cox officiating. John Francis MacDonald was born on Atlantic Street (Iron City), Sydney Mines, NS, May 6, 1941; the son of the late Bob and Mae (Sadie Mae Jobes) MacDonald. John lived most of his life in Sydney Mines. As a young man, he was quick- fisted, enjoyed boxing and was employed with the Number 1 Princess Colliery. Like many, of his time, he ventured down the road finding employment in Ontario with the Seafarers International Union. When his days of Great Lake sailing were over, he maintained Cape Breton as his home, where he was briefly employed as a Commercial fisherman out of Bay St. Lawrence and with the Labourer’s International Union. He spent many years enjoying his life in Bay St. Lawrence and in Scotch Lake and was never afraid to live off the grid. Both locations brought him closer to his family roots along with the opportunity to attend many family reunions and gatherings (MacEachern reunions, Mabou). Genealogy was important to him, noted by his lore and his wealth of knowledge about his Celtic Roots and extended family, cousins really meant something to him.
