David died peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Mulgrave, NS on October 18, 1949, David was the son of Teresa (Ryan) MacDonald and the late Hugh “Sonny” MacDonald. David graduated from St. Joseph High School in North Sydney, where he was an accomplished track and field athlete and enjoyed playing hockey. He went on to graduate from St. F.X. University in Antigonish, with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and Bachelor of Education degree in 1974. During this time he began work with C.N. Marine and continued working with C.N. and later Marine Atlantic, retiring in 2004 with over 40 years of service. Spending time with nature was an important part of David’s life. He felt peaceful sitting on the shoreline beneath the sun listening to the waves. He felt energized immersed in the water during his daily swims. He felt contented when he took his dog for his evening walks and during the last days, when beaches and walks were no longer possible, he felt great serenity sitting with Miriam on their deck watching the daily changes in the flowers that grew around them. Even the birds, who he fed every day, will miss him. David was a quiet, private man, a devoted husband and proud father to his children and grandchildren, around whom his world revolved. Besides his mother, Teresa, he is survived by his wife, Miriam (Dunn) MacDonald; his three children, Olivia, Thomas (Paige) and Vincent; by his three grandchildren, Allara, Skye, Caleb; his six siblings, Jacinta (Dale) Archibald, Brian (Judy) MacDonald, Robert MacDonald, Bill MacDonald, Brent (Jennifer) MacDonald, Michael (April) MacDonald. David was his family’s anchor, especially when life’s seas got rough. With his quiet strength and gentle confidence, always calm, always dependable, David helped put life and its troubles into perspective with a few wise words; “Small thing on a big ship.” His memory will now anchor us as we navigate these troubled waters without him. Visitation for David will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. CASEY DONALD WYLDE Born: December 18th, 1981 Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia Passed on: September 20th, 2017 Casey Donald Wylde, age 35, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Casey was born on December 18, 1981 to devoted parents, Tom and Brenda. He also leaves behind his younger brother, Kelly; beloved aunts and uncles, Mary and Joe Keough and Kim and Stan Cheney; special Godson, Noah MacDonald; as well as many cousins, special family, friends, and others whose lives he deeply touched. Casey was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a brittle bone disease that required many trips to many hospitals. Despite the trials he endured, and thanks to the unrelenting care and support of his loving parents, he never wore a frown. Even as his health deteriorated throughout his life, he never complained, or let on how much he was suffering. He was celebrated for his easy-going, polite demeanour, kindness and helpfulness to others and was known for his infectious laugh and wonderful, witty personality. He was small in stature, but mighty in spirit. Casey enjoyed computers, coding, and loved watching sports with his father. In his youth, he liked to watch wrestling, as well as his favourite hockey team, the Pittsburgh Penguins. As he got older, he became a fan of the Toronto Raptors and later the Toronto Blue Jays. He had the chance to meet many of his sports heroes throughout his life. After graduating from UCCB, Casey lived independently for a number of years and worked for Public Health and Addiction Services, where he loved his coworkers. Casey was deeply religious. Most recently, he was planning a trip in a week’s time to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, but he found a more direct route to speak with the angels. Thanks to Dr. Steven MacDougall and staff for caring for Casey all his life and the ER and IMCU doctors and nurses who cared for him in his final days. Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2017 in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Although David lived at Kelly Creek in Upper Kingsclear, New Brunswick, for David Fredericton was very much the central focus of his life. David volunteered for Scouts Canada. He was the "Crew Dad" who always had a cup of coffee for members of the Fredericton Rowing Club, and more recently David further pursued his knowledge and passion of Freemasonry by increasing his activities within the Masonic Lodge. Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to Henrietta (Peters) and Dr. Lyle Skinner, David grew up in North Sydney with his sisters, Jo-Anne (Boyd) and Jane (Skinner). David truly began his journey as a storyteller by attending Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario receiving a diploma in Media Arts. He then became a Cameraman for CBC PEI where he met his wife Coleen Matthews. Like many Cape Bretoners, David moved away for work but he never forgot his island roots. By chance, his son, Lyle Matthew Skinner was born in Sydney. This gave David an unexpected but joyful mission to show Lyle what it means to be a Caper. By all accounts, David was successful. As a CBC Cameraman for over 35 year both for The National and CBC New Brunswick, many reading this have never met David but they have seen the world through his own eyes via his camera lens. Simply reflect on some of the most significant events in New Brunswick or Atlantic Canada over the last 35 years and David likely was there to bear witness and tell the story to others through moving pictures. David took great pride in mentoring his colleagues, and students at the St. Thomas Journalism program, about how to find the 'magic shot' when recording the news. His legacy lives on with them. David did not battle cancer; he simply lived with it. This philosophy provided assurance and comfort to others experiencing difficulty with their own cancer diagnosis. Until his passing, David lived with a stoic sense of calm, dignity and a genuine concern for others. His remarkable longevity is due to the support of his best friend and wife Coleen who was there for him for every step of his long journey. To others, David stresses the importance of early detection and screening for cancer. David wants to acknowledge the tireless dedication and support of his Family Physician Dr. Anne Colpits of Fredericton and his Oncologist Daniel Rayson of Halifax. On Saturday September 23rd, there will be a visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. at McAdams Funeral Home in Fredericton. A brief Masonic Service will occur from 6:45 to 7 p.m. followed by tributes by his son Lyle and others. Subsequently Coleen and Lyle would welcome his friends and family to join them in singing one of David's favourite songs, Out on the Mira. A celebration of David's life will occur in North Sydney in July 2018. In lieu of flowers, David wishes that a donation to Camp Goodtime or Hospice Fredericton be made. Most importantly David wishes the next time you see your local CBC Cameraman that you buy them a coffee. Online condolences may be made to www.mcadamsfh.com <http://www.mcadamsfh.com/>. He was born November 5th, 1932 and a lifetime resident of Mira Road and a former voluntary fireman for the area. He also worked for several years at the steel plant in Sydney. He was the funniest man in the room, as witnessed at many a Sunday dinner and family outing. He was an avid boxing and hockey fan, who enjoyed fierce debate over the matches and games. He could be seen lending a hand to the boxers down at Venetian Gardens or spotted at his kids and grandkid’s sporting events. Hockey Night in Canada was a staple each Saturday night in the Buckingham household for decades. Plenty of cheering and critiquing of players could be heard up and down Edgar Street on the weekend. When the games weren’t on, the guitars and music could be heard playing. Frankie loved his country music. Strumming the guitar with friends and neighbors was something he delighted in for years. But the apple of his eye was clearly, Laurel Mary. She was his loving wife of 65 years and the rock in which the foundation of the family was built. No two people were more suited to tackle the hard times and laugh through the best of days. Besides his loving wife Frankie is survived by daughter, Sharon (Ray); sons, Lawrence (Eve), Roy (Julie), and Fred (Charlotte); sisters, Mary and Ann; brother, Victor; grandchildren, Dallas (Sheri), Brandy, Lindsay (Scott), Jonathan, Brandon, Alan (Jessica), Amy (Jordan), Brighton; as well as great-grandchildren, Landon and Lane. Besides his parents, Frankie is predeceased by sons, Alan and Richard; as well as sisters, Theresa, Vilma and Ruth. Visitation will take place Friday, September 22 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Frankie’s Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, September 23 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home Chapel. Rev. Sheldon Chant to officiate. Reception with the family to follow. Donations in Frankie’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of DAVID DUDLEY LYLE SKINNER David Dudley Lyle Skinner, visual storyteller, freemason, Formula One enthusiast, and proud husband, brother, uncle, and father passed away on Wednesday September 13th after living with stage 4 cancer for 24 years. Online condolences may be made to www.mcadamsfh.com.

Born March 23, 1930 in Collingwood Corner, NS, eldest son to the late Mildred ‘Mid’ (Lockhart) and Carmen Sherman. Carl grew up in Collingwood, graduating from Oxford High School in 1948. He spent two years in the Air Force as an Aeronautic technician before attending Mount Allison University. Carl completed a Certificate in Engineering in 1954. Carl then married his childhood sweetheart Kathleen (Kay) Bragg before graduating from Nova Scotia Technical College with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering in 1957. Upon graduation, Carl began his career with Gulf Oil (formerly British American Oil Company) in Clarkson, Ontario, where he held several positions in operations and project management before transferring to Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia in 1970 for the construction and start-up of the Point Tupper Refinery, later ending his time there as Refinery General Manager. In 1977, Carl and Kay moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta where Carl had accepted a senior position during the start-up of Syncrude Canada Oil sands plant. He held various positions with Syncrude before retiring as a Vice President in 1986. Carl and his loving wife Kay returned home to Nova Scotia retiring in Lake Ainslie, Cape Breton in 1991. Carl was a memorable man. He lived life well, and shared it well with others. He excelled at making people feel welcome, and in the refineries where he worked he was known for taking the time to learn the name and situation of everyone he met. He enjoyed life to the fullest, but particularly retirement. Carl and Kay enjoyed travel and spent most of their time between their “cabin” on Lake Ainslie and their winter home in Florida. Many friends and family speak of enjoying time with Kay and Carl, at one of their homes. His grandchildren share many funny stories of adventures with their Papa; he was a wonderful grandfather, like no other. Carl known for his practicality and ability to take on any task. He was an avid chef, master gardener, mechanic, carpenter, and golfer. He was an exceptional self-taught musician who often wowed us with his ability to play a song by ear on the piano after only hearing it a time or two. Carl is predeceased by his parents; siblings, Donald and June (Barnaby); his wife, Kay (Bragg), and eldest daughter, Ann. He is survived by his son, Mark (Teri); daughter, Nancy (Kevin); grandchildren, Carla (Derek), Scott, Michael, Brant, Breann, Cole and Kyle; his great-grandchildren, Lyla, Samuel, and Weston, and his many nieces and nephews. Carl spent his final months living in great care at the Shannex Parkland in Halifax; though his final months were not as he had hoped, we his family find comfort that he is now with his dear Kay, and daughter Ann, at peace. A celebration of Carl’s life will be held on Saturday, September 23 at 1:00 p.m. in the Collingwood United Church, Collingwood, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Oxford, NS (902-447-2930). I recently received a more developed version of the below Campbell families, which also ties in John Campbell / Marion Campbell of St Paul's Island (the OPR marriage reference below is theirs), and refers to other members of the family being commissioned by the British Government to build/man other light in the region. I am from Australia. We have our ancestry documented to Donald Campbell / Marrion Maclean, tenants in Toraston, Isle of Coll, with a paper trail and Y-DNA matches to decendants of two of their sons. This takes the trail back Donald's birth circa 1750. I have documented members of this family and another Campbell family by marriage as going to Pictou, Whycocomagh, Cape Breton, etc., Louisiana, Australia & New Zealand. We are starting to get more distant, but distinctive Y-DNA matches coming in from Campbells who went from Belfast to South Carolina. Given that we can now accurately place the Campbell Y-DNA read (with small variances), it would be interesting to know if the members of the families below were related to the Toraston Campbells. Marion Campbell was a dau of the eldest son, Malcolm. John Campbell was a son of Alexr Campbell / Christian Campbell, the latter in turn a dau of Donald / Marrion. Alexr / Christian's family went to Pictou Island, then on to Whycocomagh and died, it seems, in Little Narrows. Alexr is likely to be another Campbell line. I have record of that family in Gortendonnel, Tiree, circa 1795 - 1805. If you are interested, I can provide the contact for the the Campbell Y-DNA study. Please note that only Campbell males carrying the name (and with no genetic interruption) will find this test pertinent to their research on the Campbell line. Please don't hesitate to contact me directly. Have a nice Sunday. In a written account on Campbell history of which my great grandmother Flora Campbell of Estemere, Cape Breton is a descendent here is what I can offer. On June 25, 1820 The following Campbells from the Isle of Coll, Scotland sailed from the Port of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull aboard the ship Dunlop of Greenock commanded by a Captain James Brown the ships destination was Pictou, Nova Scotia. Brothers Neil and James Campbell who were married respectively to two sisters Christy and Mary MacLean both families ended up settling in Cape Breton at an area near Estemere known as The Boom. First cousins of Neil and James - Farquhar and his brother John Campbell (who settled in P.E.I.). Farquhar was a widower and was accompanied by his sisters Sarah and Katy (thier parents were dead). After arriving in Pictou the Campbell's (except for John) along with others hired passage on a smaller vessel to take them onward to Ship Harbour now known as Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia on the shores of Cape Breton Island. Five families decided to stay the winter with other Scots in Judique on Cape Breton Island but the Campbell's decided to push on toward the Bras D'Or Lakes by boat and had their boat hauled across at St. Peter's Portage (what is now St. Peter's Canal) into St. Peter's Bay and the Bras D'Or Lakes and sailed across to The Boom. Neil Campbell and his wife Christy took up 500 acres in what is now known as Estemere on the opposite side of the water from where his brother James took up land. James Campbell and his wife Mary took up 300 acres of land in the area know as Malagawatch. Farquhar Campbell took up land at a location now known as Peter's Point near the upper p[art of Big Harbour across from Big Harbour Island. Farquhar married a Miss MacIntyre from River Denysand they had two sons (John and Peter) and four daughters (Mary, Sarah, Annie and Charlotte) Sarah Campbell married a Roderick MacIntosh, an emigrant from Rosshire, Scotland and they took up land at what is known as Militia Point, Cape Breton only a few miles from where Farquhar lived. They had five sons (Donald, Alexander, Malcolm, Roderick, and Kenneth - not absolutely sure the last three names are correct) and one daughter Flora. Katy Campbell married a lawyer named O'Hearn from Arachat. They had two sons (David and James) and one daughter. MACEACHEN Born In: Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: July 6th, 1921 Passed in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: September 12th, 2017 MacEachen, Hon. Allan J., 96, of East Lake Ainslie, passed away on September 12, 2017, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Allan J. MacEachen was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia on July 6, 1921. The son of Angus and Annie (Gillies) MacEachen, a proud member of the Clan Eachainn, which originated in Scotland in 1420, and an ardent supporter and champion of the Gaelic and Celtic heritage of Cape Breton and everywhere in North America. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, John, William Gerald and Johnnie; sisters, Mary Tena and Flora Jane. Following graduation from St. Francis Xavier University in 1944 with a B.A., he would go on to attain an M.A. at the University of Toronto and proceeded to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he began doctoral studies. MacEachen would serve as Professor of Economics and later Head of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences at St. Francis Xavier University. During his time on the faculty he became a leading proponent of the University’s Extension Department programs of adult education and cooperatives. The son of a coal miner, he had first-hand exposure to the vulnerability of working families in early 20th century Canada. His advocacy of social and economic reforms led him into political action and he was nominated by the Inverness-Richmond Liberal Association as their candidate for the House of Commons in the 1953 Dominion general election. Re-elected eight times, he served as the M.P., for Inverness-Richmond, 1953-58, 1962-68 and then for Cape Breton Highlands-Canso from 1968-84. Summoned to the Senate in 1984, he would serve in the upper chamber until reaching the statutory retirement age in 1996 having become one of Canada’s most respected politicians and statesmen. Sworn into the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada on April 22, 1963, MacEachen would serve as a Minister of the Crown in the Cabinets of Lester B. Pearson, Pierre E. Trudeau and John N. Turner, holding the most senior portfolios of economic, social and foreign policy. He ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada in 1968 and would serve as Interim Party Leader in 1979 prior to the return of Pierre Elliott Trudeau to politics. His most satisfying and proudest achievements were the Medical Care Act, 1966, which would become Medicare, the Guaranteed Income Supplement for seniors and the Canada Labour Code, all which are now part of the Canadian social fabric and brought from concept to reality through skilled and patient leadership. The recipient of a number of honorary degrees, MacEachen was appointed to be an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2008. The Government of Nova Scotia will be hosting a public celebration of the Honourable Allan J. MacEachen’s life on Sunday September 17, 2017 at 2 p.m., at the Keating Centre, St. Francis Xavier University, 1100 Convocation Boulevard, Antigonish. A reception will follow the formal service. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Barbara “Barb” Jean MacPherson (nee Kenney), who died earlier this year. Larry was lost without Barb after building a wonderful life together, full of shared accomplishments. Among them were Larry’s ground-breaking tenure in the administration of Holland College in Charlottetown; his stint as P.E.I.’s deputy minister of tourism, management of Labrador College in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, periods managing Tourism Cape Breton and the Sydney airport, and most recently as the founders and proprietors of the Birches at Ben Eoin. Larry and Barb are now reunited after months apart, no longer managing an inn, but rather enjoying their eternal stay as guests in the Kingdom of God. Larry’s life was a full one that took him all over the continent in a myriad of professions, but to him, his greatest accomplishments and sources of pride were his marriage and his family. Larry is survived by his sons, Donald (Emily Bell), of Fredericton, N.B., Derek (Alexandra), of Barrie, Ont.; Darcy of Winnipeg, MB. and Devan (Kendra), of Lethbridge, Alta. As per Larry’s wishes, each of the boys has shared a thought about their parents here: Donald: “They set a shining example of partnership and parenthood.” Derek: “They showed me what it is to be strong, that coming out of one’s self is to care.” Darcy: “Together they pushed me as close as possible to my potential.” Devan: “They reminded us that life is a team sport and that family is the ultimate team”. Larry’s devotion to his family yielded the reward of grandparenthood. His grandson, Callum, 7, of Fredericton; and granddaughter, Ryan, 1, of Barrie, were the lights of his life in his golden years. Larry is also survived his brothers, Kevin (Shirley), Fulton (Ruth) and Charles; his sisters, Pauline Mesher (Robert) and Carmelina MacPherson-Bourner (Richard). He was pre-deceased by his parents, Daniel and Julia; his brothers, Walter, Daniel, Donald, Ian and Paul; and sister, Eulene. Larry started out working in the coal mines in his hometown of New Waterford, N.S., before travelling to the U.S. in his 18th year for work. After surviving a tunnel collapse and recovering from a broken back near Boston, he returned to Canada. He met Barb in B.C. when they were both teaching in the late 1960s, and after they married, he eventually returned to school to become a social worker. Fortunes took the couple to P.E.I., where Larry eventually shifted into a career in public administration, supported by Barb at every step. They built a life and raised a family in Charlottetown before setting off on new adventures and challenges after his first retirement and after the boys were through their undergraduate education. Visitation will take place at Chant’s Funeral Home in Sydney, N.S., on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Church in East Bay, N.S., on Tuesday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Parish. HIs sons endeavour to honour Larry by being dedicated professionals, decent men, and devoted partners and parents: They’ll also likely keep his spirit alive by retelling his many favorite though corny jokes. We close with the most fitting of those jokes. What did one casket say to the other casket? “Is that you coffin?” BLAIR CAUME Born In: RESERVE MINES Passed on: September 13th, 2017 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Blair Caume at home on September 13, 2017. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/ <http://www.cbgen.org/>>www.cbgen.org <http://www.cbgen.org/> NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Post September 14, 2017 Thursday EXTRA - Political giant Allan J. MacEachen remembered as the ‘Laird of Lake Ainslie’ Erin Pottie Erin.pottie@cbpost.com <mailto:Erin.pottie@cbpost.com> SYDNEY, N.S. — In Inverness County where Allan J. MacEachen was born and raised, the community is remembering a humble man whose eyes would gleam when he heard the sound of the Gaelic language. He died Tuesday night at a hospital in Antigonish at age 96. A Scottish descendant and the son of a coal miner, MacEachen was fiercely proud of his Celtic roots and would often dress in a kilt when asked to speak at local functions. A distant cousin of MacEachen’s, Stanley Beaton, said the renowned parliamentarian was among a generation of Gaels who were discouraged from speaking their mother tongue. “My mother was the same age and they basically weren’t allowed to speak it (Gaelic) in school,” said Beaton. “It was forbidden. “In the 1970s, with the revival of Gaelic, he pushed a pilot project to bring it back into the schools in Cape Breton and as a result of that my wife ended up coming here.” Members of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society had approached MacEachen in 1972, the same year in which he served as a cabinet minister under Pierre Trudeau’s Liberal minority government. The society’s pilot project would bring in fluent speakers from Scotland to aid in the island’s language revival. Among those who came to teach was Beaton’s wife Margie (Mairead) who took part in a five-year trial that led to Gaelic being added into the Nova Scotia school curriculum. Mairead said after a series of cutbacks to education in the 1980s, several schools dropped their Gaelic course offerings, with the exception of Mabou. Since that time, there have been increasing efforts to preserve Gaelic history in Nova Scotia. “We’re actually exporting teachers to Scotland now,” said Mairead. “We’re producing our own teachers and the Gaelic college (in St. Anns) has all kinds of former students who are now teaching the language.” For his devotion to the Gaelic language and higher education, in 2000 MacEachen’s name was mounted onto Mabou’s high school and performing arts centre. He is also the namesake to a non-partisan think-tank at Dalhousie University and each year at his alma mater, St. Francis Xavier University, there is a lecture series in his honour. A next-door neighbour of MacEachen’s said in recent years the former senator had been living at his Trout River cottage in Lake Ainslie with the help of a full-time caregiver. MacEachen was known for always stopping to speak with local residents. He was also a devout Roman Catholic who never missed the opportunity to attend a Sunday mass. “I always struck up a conversation in basic Gaelic and that would always please him,” said Michael Gillis, who operates MacKinnon’s campground in Lake Ainslie. “We’d have some little short conversations and you could see it brought joy to him to hear that and in the earlier years he and my mom would share some stories in Gaelic as well. In his later years, where it was hard to strike up much conversation, (speaking Gaelic) would always bring a twinkle in his eye. Inverness County Warden Betty Ann MacQuarrie said MacEachen was a humble man who set the tone for how a politician should act in the interest of his community. “He was such an inspiration to all of us,” she said. “His goals and aspirations are certainly recognized here and his way of associating with his constituents is to be marvelled at. “ Cathy MacLean, president of Lake Ainslie’s historical society, said MacEachen was a firm supporter of their MacDonald House Museum, which offers visitors a glimpse into rural life in Cape Breton in the last century and into the 1940’s. “He would come in his kilt to all of our gatherings,” said MacLean. “He came to all functions and would be introduced and would speak, and then if we were looking for some grant or some other help through the federal government he was always willing to give it and was very gracious.” Inverness Oran editor, Rankin MacDonald, said Wednesday that like MacEachen he too grew up in a coal mining family in Cape Breton. He looked up to MacEachen, who became his friend and neighbour in Lake Ainslie. MacDonald said he once asked the ‘Laird of Lake’ if a steady influx of government funding to Cape Breton might create a climate of dependency. “He stopped and looked at me with those piercing eyes and he said ‘You know Rankin, I never thought that sharing the wealth of Canada was a bad thing.’ That’s how he was, he wanted everybody to have a good life. … He was our greatest citizen, there’s no doubt about that.” MacEachen was first elected into federal office in 1953 and won nine subsequent elections, losing his seat only once in 1958. He held various cabinet positions and was considered instrumental is bringing forward some of Canada’s foremost social programs. He was named the country’s first deputy prime minister in 1977 and served as a Liberal senator for 12 years. news@cbpost.com <mailto:news@cbpost.com>
