Born in N.E. Mabou, on December 8th, 1939, Lawrence learned at a young age the value of family and of hard work on his family’s farm. At age 17, Lawrence went to Elliot Lake, Ontario, to take up hard-rock mining, where he discovered his natural leadership skills and ability to meet or exceed production demands. Having met his future wife while visiting his beloved Cape Breton home, Lawrence and Mary married in 1964, at which time they took up residence in Massachusetts. Lawrence eventually pursued the carpentry trade, first as a union carpenter in Boston, and then as a residential home contractor in Massachusetts, and for a time in Cape Breton. Carpentry was a natural match for Lawrence, and he followed this trade with joy and passion for over 50 years. Lawrence loved his family and made them and their welfare the centre of his life. His deep faith in Christ and his kind and honest nature earned him the respect of many. Lawrence is predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, his parents, Angus Dan and Jessie Beaton; his brother, Neil, and sisters, Anne (Beaton) and Kathleen (Hayes); and his nephew Kevin (Gillis). He is survived by his daughter, Gail (Peter), and his sons, Curtis (Antoinette) and Christopher (Melanie); his grandchildren, Amanda, Alex, Alyssa, and Audrey; his brother, AJ, and sister, Mary Catherine (Gillis) as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place on Thursday, October 5th, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in Port Hood and Area Resting Place, Port Hood. The funeral Mass will be held at Saint Joseph’s Parish, S.W. Margaree, on Friday, October 6th, at 11:00 a.m., with Father McDonald Ibah officiating. Interment will follow immediately afterwards in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation or the PKD Foundation of Canada. Tommy was a proud member of the CEP Local 972. Upon his retirement he moved back to his much-loved Margaree Harbour. Edmund (Ed) Sampson Passed on: October 2nd, 2017 Practice love until you remember that you are love; a fitting quote for a beautiful soul. Edmund ‘Ed’ Sampson, our loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed to the next phase of his life’s journey on October 2, 2017, at the house of his daughter, Betty Ann, surrounded by the loving energy of his entire family. Ed was a role model to all who had the privilege of spending time with him and was the ‘go to’ guy for everything from knitting, to taxes, to DIY construction. He was strong and charismatic, yet gentle and sensitive; supportive, selfless, and stubborn, with a smile that could light up a room and a smirk that could make you laugh. Humorous and intelligent, his expansive vocabulary is something we won’t ever forget. He loved learning and reading and if he didn’t know how to do something he would go to the library and learn to do it. Persistent and compassionate, his love, openness and acceptance were oh so natural. He loved kisses and gave the most comforting, wholeheartedly hugs. He was born on April 11, 1930, to late Marie and Simon Sampson in Sydney. He has done many things in his life, including being General Manager of Rowe Freight Marine until he retired. He was a long standing member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteer for many organizations, avid collector, and natural teacher. Well there’s no manual, but I’m pretty sure if there was, Ed’s life journey thus far would have fulfilled the criteria many times over. Ed’s family members still continuing with this part of life’s journey include his children, Simon (Debby Sampson), Tom (Jodi Myers), Betty Anne (Meldon Richardson), Alice (Darrell Hardy) and Joanne (Jimmy MacQueen); his grandchildren, Clint, Christopher, Crystal, Jade, Tara, Matt, Katie, Janice, Josh, Tara and Troy; his 11 great grandchildren, and his siblings, Donnie, Ronnie, Alex, Carol, Alice and Betty. Predeceased by his loving wife, Rita (2016), and siblings, Anna, Dolly and Marie. Ed’s family would like to extend warmest thanks to Palliative Care and VON nurses, and anyone else who helped to care for our loved one throughout his illness. Visitation will take place at S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Thursday, October 5, 2017, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of life with a reception to follow, at Chant’s Funeral Home, on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the CBRH or a charity of your choice. Beverly’s struggle over the last few months with illness was a difficult one, but her determination and strength in the face of adversity was a true inspiration. Some might say her New Waterford spirit shone bright. Born in Florence, Cape Breton on January 17, 1943 and raised in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Margaret (Ness) Kiely and George Griffiths. She graduated from Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing in 1964 and had an illustrious nursing career in Cape Breton, Pictou County and later in Antigonish where she helped found the diabetic clinic. Beverly truly understood the fears and struggles of her patients and had such genuine care and compassion for all those she encountered. In the years since her retirement, the visits, cards and calls from those she served through the diabetic clinic were a testament to all she accomplished. Her beloved Rocky won her heart at the Sydney Forum and they were married on March 22, 1968. Throughout their married life, they were a team unlike any other. Her support of Rocky’s professional boxing career and the decades of refereeing that followed brought them to various corners of the earth and made them friends around the world. When Rocky, her best friend, died in 2009, a piece of Beverly died with him. She missed him desperately and never quite got her spark back. What kept her going was the greatest joy in her life – her children and grandchildren who she adored. Bev’s generosity and commitment to community expressed itself in her volunteering with the Canadian Association for Community Living; in her role as President of the Canadian Diabetes Association and in the many charities she supported. She is survived by son, Sean (Nicole), Hantsport, NS; daughters, Stacey, Castlegar, BC and Jody (Stephen) MacIntyre, Charlottetown, PE, and grandchildren, Logan, Ayla, Avery, Lily, Caelan, Rory and Ashtyn. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Donnie (Theresa) MacDougall, and sister-in-law, Margaret (Jack) Carmichael, along with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 5 in St. James United Church, Antigonish, prior to Funeral Service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Peter Smith presiding. Burial to follow in St. Ninian’s Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the CACL or to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Funeral arrangements under the direction of the C.L. Curry Funeral Home. Delores Eileen McMullin Born: July 24th, 1965 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our sister Delores Eileen McMullin. Delores grew up in Glace Bay, and after graduating from St. Michael’s High School, attended the University College of Cape Breton; after which, she settled in Halifax to attend Mount Saint Vincent University. While working in a variety of restaurants in her early twenties, Dee found her passion in the food industry and a keen interest in “haute cuisine”. Francis McPhee Francis is also survived by sister, Mary Catherine (Everett) Van Kroon Bergh, Ontario was inadvertently left out of his obituary that appeared in the post on September 27, 2017 Janet Edith McLEOD (MARSHE) Passed on: September 24th, 2017 It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved mother Janet passed away on September 24, 2017 at her home after a brief illness. Born on May 21, 1952 in New Waterford, Cape Breton Island, she was the eldest daughter of the late Wallace and Joyce (Mitchell) Marshe, and was predeceased by her brother, Gordon, and is survived by her brothers, Robert (Beatrice), Peter (Terri), Stephen (Cheryl), and her sister, Coleen, who was her constant companion and caregiver. Our mother led a simple life and dedicated it to raising us, her children, Dianne (Mike), Wally and Erica, and was unfailing in her commitment to give us the best life she could. She didn't have much in the way of material possessions but she had an abundance of love and loyalty to her family. Our mom was also the birth mother to her son, John, who she selflessly and lovingly placed for adoption as an infant. Our mother was exceedingly proud of her grandchildren, Michael, Alison, Julie and Evan, and the birth of her great-granddaughter, Natalie, brought her tremendous joy. She never missed a birthday always sending a card to her grandchildren with a few dollars tucked inside, a tradition she kept even as they grew into adulthood. To honor Janet's wishes cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. If you have the means and wish to make an expression of sympathy our mother's lifelong dream was to find a cure for Schizophrenia and a donation to the Schizophrenia Society of Canada Foundation would be appreciated. In keeping with the spirit of our mom, the most important way you can honor her is to live an honest life, be kind to others, take time to have a tea with those you love, lend a caring hand to those who are struggling and remember, "this too shall pass". Arrangements have been entrusted to Coutts Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, (519) 621-1650. Online condolences may be left at www.couttsfuneralhome.com. It was a life well lived, and lived on his terms. He was a Son, Pilot, Father, Farmer, Teacher, Builder, Sailor and Friend. Born in Timmins, Ontario, June 6, 1922, he was the only son of Lenold and Grace Hall (nee Jones) and grandson of Douglas and Elizabeth Jones (nee Hutcheon). His early years were spent in Schumacher where his family worked for the McIntyre and Hollinger mines. Douglas left the north to join an uncle in Toronto to finish his schooling at North Toronto and then at Lawrence Park Collegiate. He returned to the North after his schooling and listed his occupation as miner. Douglas was one of many who flew with the RCAF during the Second World War. He joined in July 1941 at age 19, at Toronto and received his wings at Dunnville, June 19, 1942. During his time with the Air Force he was referred to as “Sammy”. He under went flight training (while training others) at No 9 Bombing and Gunnery School, at both Mt. Joli and Bagotville, before going overseas with 400 Squadron on Sept 19, 1943. Douglas was then posted to 414 Squadron from 1944 to 1945 then finished his tour of duty with 411 Squadron. He was a photo-reconnaissance fighter pilot flying high and low altitude sorties, initially in Mustangs and then Spitfires. He received his first Distinguished Flying Cross while with 414 Squadron on March 29, 1945. In May of 1945 he engaged a formation of enemy aircraft at Neuntadt and downed 3 FW and one ME, while damaging two others, and he was awarded his second DFC for his exploits and he became the Squadron Ace. After the cessation of hostilities before repatriation from England he was one of the first test pilots for the first Operational Jet Fighter, the Gloster Meteor. (F/L, 1941 to 1946, Photo Reconnaissance Fighter Pilot, DFC and Bar, Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour (awarded 2015), Star of Germany, Star of France, 1939 – 1945 Star; 1939 – 1945 War Medal, Defense Metal, CVSM, RCAF Reserve.) While in England he met, fell in love and married Margaret Flavin, who joined him in Canada after his repatriation in March of 1946 and subsequent release on July 5, 1946. They initially set up home in Millikan, then in Barry’s Bay, and finally settled on a farm outside of Uxbridge. He farmed for many years while supplementing income by working as a miner, a long distance truck driver and a lumberjack (during the winter months) in Northern Ontario. By the mid-1950’s he obtained employment at GM and continued to farm and take courses in Toronto. After receiving his certification from the Radio College in Toronto, he opened his first store in Uxbridge in 1957 and two years later sold the farm and moved to the new family residence on Toronto Street. It was a busy time, finishing the new house, running his business, and raising their family, he still made time to be an active member of the community. Douglas was a Kiwanis member and was President of the Uxbridge Kiwanis Club (1964), he was on the Management Board Committee of the Uxbridge Music Hall (1966), voted onto the Uxbridge Town Council and was Deputy Reeve of Ontario County (1966 – 1969). He held executive positions with the Royal Canadian Legion, Uxbridge Branch. He was also a ham radio operator and made contacts world-wide. In 1969 he completed the Technology Program at Durham College in Oshawa. He started teaching night school while working during the day in the technology department. He continued taking advanced courses at the University of Toronto towards his degree and moved to the analytical chemistry area as a Laboratory Instructor and then was promoted to Teaching Master at Durham College in the Chemistry Department where he taught until his retirement. He was a man of many interests. He curled at the Uxbridge Curling Club, golfed with a wood, five iron and putter (and still managed to win once in a while!). He played squash at the courts in Uxbridge and then at Durham College, was a competitive duplicate bridge player, and managed to spend nights at the symphony. He was also an avid sailor and runner. He sailed every summer on the waterways of all the great lakes and trained to run marathons. He took summer courses in welding and blacksmithing and applied his various skills to building a steel hull 36 Robert’s sail boat on his side yard in Uxbridge. He sailed his boat (Castle Dougall) in and around Georgian Bay before gifting it to Leo. He rigged and sailed a 22 ft. boat with H. Brown on the Mackenzie River to Inuvik (their goal was the Beaufort Sea), explored the Yukon River with his sons, took a kayak trip on the Danube, and biked the hills of Ireland with Ike and Kevin. Then he visited the country sides of France and Germany en route to visit Leo and Kathleen at Lahr. Many winters were spent at Ike’s cabin in Washington State skiing (had a Master Ski pass for Mt. Baker) and in Maple Ridge, BC. Between daily skiing (on the black diamond slopes), visits to the local coffee shop, and working with Ike on various projects, he was busy all winter. Road trips were taken to see the sights of Canada, traveling to the coast many times (regardless of weather) to visit with Cathy and the grandchildren, to visit with Aunt Joan in California or just to spend time in the warm sands off the Florida Keys. One of his last major trip was via the Alaska Marine Hwy Ferry from Bellingham to visit Kevin in Whitehorse (with the dog, his two daughters, and son in tow). The Northern Lights danced that night in welcome. Over the past twenty-five years, with periodic visits to Uxbridge, he spent his summers in Little Current on Manitoulin Island, initially living on the Castle Dougall and then in the residence that he built. Yearly he made concrete as one of his projects as well as helping neighbours. At age 87 he commenced, with Ike, designing and building a second steel boat on the side yard of his home. Sam, Leo and Kevin also did “time” on the boat. It was a point of interest for Little Current to monitor the progress of this 39-ft. custom steel boat. Douglas is predeceased by his spouse, Margaret Flavin (2002); his youngest son, Leo (2009) and his middle son, Sam (2012). His memory will be cherished by all those who knew him. We who are left will tell the stories and remember his life’s adventure; his children, Peter, Margaret, Cathy Komourdjian (Martin), Kevin, Ike, Theresa Usprech; his daughter-in-law, (our sister) Kathleen and our special sister Wendy. Loving grandfather to Maria (Hani), Ali and Amanda. A sincere thank you to all the persons at Sunnybrook Veterans’ Centre (George Hees – L Wing – East) for their support, comfort and responsiveness since 2014. Everyone’s kindness and attentiveness provided an environment of comfort to Douglas during his time at the residence. Theresa, your family thank you for your cheerful face and daily encouragement in providing family support to Dad over these years. Please join the family on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Uxbridge Cemetery at 12:30 for the interment service with a Legion Tribute followed by A Celebration for Douglas, from 2:00 until 4:00, at the Royal Canadian Legion, Uxbridge Branch #170, 109 Franklin Street, Uxbridge, ON. On Sunday, October 15, 2017 the family will welcome friends for fellowship and refreshments at the Little Current, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #177 in a Celebration for Douglas, Downstairs Club Room, from 1 to 3 p.m. In Douglas’ memory, consider a donation to the Veteran’s Comfort Fund re: Creative Arts Therapy, Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, L Wing, L1108 - 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, ON M4N 3M5 or the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #170 or Branch #177 or your preferred charity. 1. [NS-CB] HISTORY - Government prepares database on Inuit tuberculosis graves
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Cape Breton Post September 25, 2017 Monday Government prepares database on Inuit tuberculosis graves Jack Anawak was eight years old in 1956, the year the doctors came to his family’s home in their tiny Arctic community and took his mother south to treat her tuberculosis. Two years later, she died in hospital and was buried, somewhere. The family was never told where and for nearly 60 years the mystery has sat in Anawak’s heart like a dark hole in the sea ice that never freezes smoothly over. “It left a question mark,’’ said Anawak, who became a prominent Inuit leader and Liberal MP. “Where is she buried? Where did this happen? “You’re always wondering where your loved one is. To me it’s really important we close that final chapter of our lives, to finally realize you can go and visit your mom or your dad.’’ Anawak may finally get some answers. After nearly 10 years of work, the federal government is preparing to release a database holding everything that is known about what happened to people who were taken south for tuberculosis treatment. “The database is a little bit imperfect, even as we launch,’’ said Elizabeth Logue, who runs the Nanilavut program, Inuktitut for “Let’s Find Them.’’ “But there are a lot of people that are getting on in years and they just want to see what’s out there.’’ Since 2008, Logue and a team of researchers have been pouring over records from federal departments, provincial and territorial archives, church files, records from cemeteries, sanatoria and hospitals as well as from individual informants. They now have a database of records on about 4,500 Inuit who were taken south. Some detail treatment and return. Some only describe treatment, without any information on whether the patient survived. Some record a death, but no burial. Some files are complete. “Some of those stories are not the full story yet,’’ said Logue. “We’re working with (land claim groups) to ensure that once we have the database available, that the context is there to tell the story.’’ A few Inuit have already had a look through the database and have found what they needed. But for most, it will be accessed through land claims groups. “Seeing some of this information for the first time can bring up some trauma,’’ Logue said. “There will be health supports involved in this.’’ The issue remains close to the surface. “It’s a very personal issue and one that is very relevant to our communities today,’’ said Natan Obed of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canada’s national Inuit group. “There are many family members that are searching for their lost loved ones. “In many cases, they were brought back to the wrong community. There are some circumstances where family members believe their loved ones are still alive.’’ Tuberculosis is still about 50 times more frequent among Inuit than among southerners. Poverty and housing are the main reasons, but sociologists say one reason TB remains hard to handle among Inuit is their memory of how they were once treated. Between 1953 and 1961, a total of 5,240 Inuit, from toddlers to elders, were sent south, sometimes plucked right out of hunting camps on the land. The entire Eastern Arctic Inuit population at the time was only about 11,500. ‘’They took the parents _ mother and father _ and the ships would pull away and the kids were left standing on the beach,’’ one former bureaucrat told the 2010 Qikiqtani Truth Commission. Another said: ‘’If it was a mother with a baby in the hood, the radiologist would pick the baby up and give it to whoever was standing closest.’’ For a while, Canada’s largest Inuit community was a sanatorium in Hamilton. The mortality rate for southerners with TB in 1953 was 9.9 per 100,000 patients; for Inuit, it was 298.1. Logue said the issue is at the forefront for the Inuit-Canada Working Group, struck last February by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Ministerial pressure is also driving the database forward. Still, she can’t put a date on when it will be available. “Soon,’’ she said. “It’s being accelerated.’’ It can’t come fast enough for Anawak. “My dad passed away not knowing where (his wife) was buried,’’ he said. “It goes through your mind, what she must have gone through, being in a strange land. “She had a very long hair, down to her ankles. Some other person who was down there at the time told me that when she saw her, her hair had been cut off. That enraged me _ her precious hair was cut off.’’ Over the decades, he said, the past has come knocking. “It’s like I’ve gotten messages from her,’’ said Anawak. “Thirty years after she passed away, one of my aunts told me that when she was leaving her to go back home, (my mom) told her, ‘Make sure my Jacky always has kamiks (boots).’ It was almost like a message from the past.’’
