Anna Isabel MacIntyre Chisholm was born on August 21st, 1925, in Inverness, Cape Breton, to the late John Dan MacIntyre and Jessie MacMaster-MacIntyre. Momma grew up in a large, loving family of six boys and five girls in Inverness. She loved to sing and dance and was a devout Catholic. During the War, she worked as a riveter in the Halifax Shipyards and as a dietary aid in Camp Hill Hospital for Veterans. She took great pride in her contribution and support to our troops. She married James Roderick Chisholm on February 14th, 1946, in St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and moved back home to Inverness. Momma's door was always open and the teapot was always boiling on the coal stove. She had a wonderful sense of humour, a heart of gold, a witty tongue, a listening ear, a sharp mind, and hugs and kisses for anyone in need. She also had a smile that would lift your spirits and a singing voice of an angel. Her Catholic faith was her refuge and strength all the days of her life. Momma loved going to mass and reciting the rosary. She enjoyed seeing the many faces during the collection of offerings in church and participated as a reader and a eucharistic minister. As a mother of 10 children, she was never too busy to tell us that she loved us, never forgot a birthday, and she sang lullabies to us with more than enough hugs, and encouraged us to treat everyone with kindness and respect. BOB “DAYGO” DAY Dad gave his last wildly inappropriate "hug" and made his last sarcastic comment on October 14, 2017. Left behind to miss his devilish ways is our mom, The Bride, The Saint, Janet Petite Day, who he enjoyed 48 years with. Kicking and screaming, he was born in his parent's bedroom on December 4, 1947. He became the apple of Nannie's eye and gave Poppy a run for his money (Fred and Margie Day). Known to be the life of the party and being the centre of attention, Dad was always generous with unsolicited advice in exchange for dark rum. Before he entered his cantankerous years, Dad could be found barking out orders at the various beer league softball teams he "coached" or on the many mandatory "feeling no pain" dart and bowling trips. Being a self-professed jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none on any and all things (aka know-it-all) made him a valued and much loved guy. He taught all of us how to handle ourselves in all situations and how to jerry-rig just about anything. Growing up he taught us to enjoy sports and gently persuaded the 5 of us to adore his beloved Habs. Thankfully it only worked on one of us. The King of Stubbornness grew up with siblings Lorraine Standing, Bill Day, Phoebe Pero, Linda Wilson and was a super hero to his baby brother Mike Day. Having grandchildren made him a little soft and even a little lovable. Only granddaughter Kianna (Chucky) Marsh and rugrats Devlen White, Kirk and and Riley Day, Jack, Lex and Reed Boutilier, Hunter, Breton, and Daymus Day will miss their precious Grumpie. His great granddaughter, his wee sweetpea Charlotte, who he couldn't wait to meet, will hear all about his wily ways as she grows up. Dad hit the jackpot with his in-laws John (Laurie) Petite, Trudy (David) Blackburn, Jackie (David) Kuchurean and Audrey Petie MacDonald. So we, the 5 "Good Ones", Nicole (Mike) White, Jeff (Nancy) Day, Nadine (Ian) Boutilier, John Day, and Peter Day, ask to join us as we give our last cheers to Dad at Jobes Funeral Home, Main St., Sydney Mines, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9. A private family service will be held later in the week. Donations may be made to the MS Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com "See ya in church, back pew. I'll bring the jug." John Thomas Boyd Born In: Glace Bay Born: August 5th, 1935 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: October 7th, 2017 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of an amazing husband, father, papa, and friend, John Thomas Boyd, 82, of Glace Bay. Surrounded by his loving family and holding the hand of the love of his life, his wife, Theresa (Jones) Boyd, John peacefully passed away to eternal Glory on October 7, 2017 at the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, August 5, 1935, he was the son of Archibald and Mabel (Goodwin) Boyd. He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Theresa (Jones) Boyd, Glace Bay, and his devoted children, daughters, Nancy Boyd of Glace Bay, Deborah (Gerald Crowther) of Sydney and son, Donald Boyd (Ashley) of Sydney; his precious grandchildren, Evan Coole and Sarah Crowther, who were the stars of his life. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by sisters, Shirley Dale and Jean Zwarum (both of Ontario). Dad had a strong sense of adventure and social justice, a wonderful trait he passed on to his children and grandchildren. In his youth, he served in the Canadian Armed Forces and subsequently worked with the Dominion Coal Company and Devco for 30 years. He was Production Supervisor at No. 26 Colliery and Phalen Mine at the time of his retirement. John instilled in us a strong work ethic, compassion, charity, personal respect, integrity and pursuit of excellence in education. He believed that one person can make a difference in the quality of other people’s lives. John was very active in the Union Movement from 1968 to 1987. He was president of Cupe Local 2046 and after his retirement, continued to champion the rights of workers. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. John will be remembered as a kind, loving and fair person who was willing to help anyone at any time. In his later years, he would often be seen sitting in his lawn chair in the front yard speaking to people passing by and giving sage words of wisdom to young and old. John left a positive and lasting impression with all who knew him. He was an excellent story teller and every story always had a life lesson in it, which we cherished. John had a close relationship with God and drew closer to his Lord and Savior as he journeyed through life. He would share this good news with everyone around him and anyone who knew him will feel the loss of his passing. We are rest assured that John is a new creation in Jesus Christ and is celebrating the full bounty of God’s love and grace in heaven. A special thank you to the nursing staff of 4C, 3B, VON, Palliative Care, Physiotherapists and Music Therapist, as well as the Doctors and nursing staff of An Cala Unit who provided excellent care to John throughout his illness. To the end, John made everyone smile and laugh around him. His spirit and love will forever live in our hearts. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of SW Chant and Son Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with John’s wishes, an intimate graveside service with immediate family will take place at a later date. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.chantfuneralhome.ca. John 14: 1-3 Jesus said “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God: believe also in me. Cape Breton Post January 02, 2017 Reserve Mines native receives peace medal from South Korean government SYDNEY - A special ceremony was held at Celtic Court retirement home last week to honour Jerome (Yomi) McNeil, a veteran of the Korean War. The 83-year-old from Reserve Mines was declared an ‘ambassador for peace’ by the South Korean government to recognize an ‘everlasting gratitude’ for the service he and other Canadian soldiers ‘performed in restoring and preserving freedom and democracy.’ “We Koreans have never forgotten the great legacy of the 27,000 Canadians who fought shoulder to shoulder with us and the brave 516 who made the ultimate sacrifice,” according to a letter sent to McNeil from Jin Hur, Consul General and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea. “In fact, more than 60 years later, the memory of the Korean war veteran’s courage on the Korean Peninsula still resonates in the hearts and minds of the Korean people.” The medal ceremony on Dec. 21 was taken in by family members Boe McNeil, Jay McNeil, Gerry McNeil, as well as Doe McGrath, who represented the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 3. The medal recipient served in Korea from 1953-54 as a member of the Queens Own Rifles of Canada but mostly kept his memories of that time in Korea to himself, according to his brother Boe McNeil. “The only comment I ever got from him was in reference to the Korean people themselves,” Boe said. “He knew how grateful that we were there to help them out.” At the presentation at Celtic Court where Yomi has lived since a dementia diagnosis, a large group of staff members gathered for the medal ceremony. “When they started to talk about Korea, he knew what this medal was all about,” said Boe. “He was right there into it at that time.” Tom Kennedy, president and service officer of the Glace Bay legion, said similar ambassador for peace medals were recently mailed to Korean War veterans around Glace Bay, Port Morien and New Waterford but a special emphasis was placed on McNeil’s presentation. “The veteran’s received their application through the legion and they sent away for it and it was delivered to their home,” said Kennedy. “Since Yomi was in a home nobody had filled it out for him. When his family came to see us, they asked us about it and so I gave him the number for the Korean embassy in Ottawa.” Kennedy said the process often takes months and months but McNeil’s arrived in a matter of weeks. “The Korean embassy really came through on this one. It was nice of them to turn it around so quick. We are sending a letter off to the Korean embassy, thanking them for their action.” Once the medal arrived, McNeil’s family asked if officials with the Br. 3 legion could formally present it and they happily obliged. Kennedy said the medals are awarded to soldiers those who volunteered to ‘help South Korea with their fight with North Korea.’ “It ended in 1953 but it was also for anyone who served six months after the armistice was signed.” According to an official proclamation from the Republic of Korean signed by Park, Sung Choon, Minister Patriots and Veterans Affairs Republic of Korea the medal of peace reaffirms a mutual respect and friendship so that it may endure for generations to come. “We cherish in our hearts the memory of your boundless sacrifices in helping us reestablish our free nation,” the letter states. “It is a great honour and pleasure to express the everlasting gratitude of the Republic of Korea and our people for the service you and your countryman have performed in restoring and preserving our freedom and democracy.” The medal is now in a case outside of McNeil’s room at Celtic Court for all to see.

Edmund ‘Ed’ Sampson, our loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed to the next phase of his life’s journey on October 2, 2017, at the house of his daughter, Betty Ann, surrounded by the loving energy of his entire family. Ed was a role model to all who had the privilege of spending time with him and was the ‘go to’ guy for everything from knitting, to taxes, to DIY construction. He was strong and charismatic, yet gentle and sensitive; supportive, selfless, and stubborn, with a smile that could light up a room and a smirk that could make you laugh. Humorous and intelligent, his expansive vocabulary is something we won’t ever forget. He loved learning and reading and if he didn’t know how to do something he would go to the library and learn to do it. Persistent and compassionate, his love, openness and acceptance were oh so natural. He loved kisses and gave the most comforting, wholeheartedly hugs. He was born on April 11, 1930, to late Marie and Simon Sampson in Sydney, Cape Breton. He has done many things in his life, including being General Manager of Rowe Freight Marine until he retired. He was a long standing member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteer for many organizations, avid collector, and natural teacher. Oh, and a tea drinker, he loved it so black you could walk on it. What’s the purpose of life? Well there’s no manual, but I’m pretty sure if there was, Ed’s life journey thus far would have fulfilled the criteria many times over. Ed’s family members still continuing with this part of life’s journey include his children, Simon (Debby Sampson), Tom (Jodi Myers), Betty Anne (Meldon Richardson), Alice (Darrell Hardy) and Joanne (Jimmy MacQueen); his grandchildren, Clint, Christopher, Crystal, Jade, Tara, Matt, Katie, Janice, Josh, Tara and Troy; his 11 great grandchildren, and his siblings, Donnie, Ronnie, Alex, Carol, Alice and Betty. Predeceased by his loving wife, Rita (2016), and siblings, Anna, Dolly and Marie. Ed’s family would like to extend warmest thanks to Palliative Care and VON nurses, and anyone else who helped to care for our loved one throughout his illness. Visitation will take place at S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Thursday, October 5, 2017, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of life with a reception to follow, at Chant’s funeral home, on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the CBRH or a charity of your choice.
