Katherine (Babe) Kavanagh October 20, 1928, Glace Bay, NS - October 26, 2017, Sydney, NS -Eighty-nine incredible years Passed on: October 27th, 2017 Katherine, known affectionately to all as ‘Babe’, was the daughter of the late George and Margaret Shears of Table Head and was the last of her siblings to pass away. She had recently moved, and was happy in her new apartment, but, sadly, died peacefully in her sleep under medical care after a heart attack last Thursday. Babe grew up in Table Head and was educated in Glace Bay and later at Normal School (teachers’ college), and later completed her degree from St. Francis Xavier University. She taught for over 35 years in Cape Breton Schools, most notably Woodill and Ashby in Sydney. She also spent one school year (1984-85) on a teaching exchange at Norquay Elementary in Vancouver where she made many friends. Babe made a lasting impression as an adored teacher, and even taught the children and grandchildren of some former students. Babe was an avid participant in many sports: basketball, badminton, tennis, curling, skiing, swimming and golf. She was even an early adherent of yoga in Sydney. When health and mobility became an issue, she still kept up with yoga and walking. She passed this love of athletics to her children and grandchildren. Other loves included reading - especially a good mystery – travel, bridge, movie nights, and hearing how everyone’s kids were doing. She also loved her Cape Breton and Newfoundland heritage and the rich cultural traditions and natural beauty of this part of the world. An active member of diverse communities throughout her life, Babe was at times President of the Vincent Massey Chapter of the I.O.D.E., member of the Cape Breton University Board of Governors, member of the Board of Directors for Cape Breton Community Housing and a member of the retired teachers association. Lately she has been active with Parkinson's Canada, encouraging support for the local Parkinson’s SuperWalk. She was also a founding member of United Heritage Church. Babe’s friends were legion. Whether they were friends for 75 years, like Marge Butts, or friends for decades, like Terry McCluskey, for a year, or a simply vacation trip – age was no impediment to the gift of Babe’s friendship. Wherever she travelled, lived, or worked, their numbers grew. Be it colleagues, sports enthusiasts, card players, travelers, Florida snowbirds in St. Pete’s Beach with she and Cy, Saturday breakfasts at local churches (and occasionally the casino), those she met in her many homes from Glace Bay to Sydney to Vancouver, and of course her wonderful neighbours at Moxham Place, where she lived for the past several years. She was even making new friends in her last apartment in Parkland, Cape Breton these past few weeks. Babe also had the joy and love that comes from being a part of an enormous extended family made up of Shears, MacLeans, MacLeods, and Kavanaghs and all their friends and relations. In many cases, she was not only and aunt or an in-law: she was also a dear friend. Babe was predeceased by her siblings, Russell (Evelyn), Angus and Arthur Shears, and Jean (Dick) Porter; husband, Cyril Kavanagh, and in-laws, Leroy, Madeleine, Clarence, Bud, Donnie, Louis, Bernadette, John, and stepsons, Peter Kavanagh and Dan McCurdy, also by husband, Donald MacLeod, and in-laws, Hal Norton, Norma (Doug) MacLeod. Babe (also Mom, Grammy, and Nana) is survived by many loving children and step-children and their families (as listed together, parents first), Isabelle (Pete) and the dogs; Ross (Beth) and Rory and Colin MacLeod; Ian (Andrea) and Miranda MacLeod; Mary and Josh McCurdy; Kathy and Jennifer, Nolan and Ava, Adam (Patrice) and Lily Martin; John (Ann) and Rhys (Sam), Eliot (Taylor) and Nella, Byron and Owen Kavanagh; Paul (Barb) Kavanagh and Melinda (Tyler) and Landon, Hunter and Declan Beckett; Doug (Chantelle) and Abel Rough, and Debi and Jane Goodwin. She is survived, as well, by several in-laws, Evelyn and Dorothy Shears, Eileen Norton, Gladys Gorey, Earl and Joan, Al and Corrine, Tom and Denise, Kevin and Betty Anne, Joyce, and Laurencia Kavanagh, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Paul Morrison, the E.R. Staff of the Regional Hospital, and the EMT personnel who made Babe’s final hours peaceful, calm and hopeful. And the family also thanks Dr. John Archibald for his many years of care. A final special note of thanks from all who loved Babe to Keith and Ann Shears, and to Kathy Martin for their tremendous affection, companionship, and help they gave Babe through the years, and especially in her final days. There will be a Celebration of Life from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 1 at Chant’s Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. There will be a private memorial service for family and close friends on Thursday, November 2. Donations in loving memory of Katherine ‘Babe’ Kavanagh may be made to your charity of choice, such as Parkinson’s Canada, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.chantfuneralhome.ca.

Funeral arrangements under the direction of... Catherine MACDOUGALL Passed on: October 24th, 2017 Our devoted mother, Catherine Matilda (MacCormick) MacDougall, age 99, quietly passed away on October 24, 2017 comforted by her loving family at MacGillivary Guest Home where she resided for the past 2 years. Mom was born on March 14, 1918 in Bridgeport, Dominion, to Racheal (Mac Donald) and Allan MacCormick. Soon after, the family moved to French Road, Mira, where Mom’s maternal family originated. Mom often spoke fondly of her childhood in French Road but with a strong need for independence, she moved to Sydney at age 14 to work as a live in housekeeper, a role she spoke of with pride. During this time, she shared stories of having fun with her many girlfriends, going to dances at the old lyceum, and pie socials in Mira. At age 22, she met Duncan from Grand Mira North who she liked “because he was quiet, a good worker and good looking”. They married on July 22, 1941, settled in Sydney River and celebrated 65 years of marriage before he passed in November, 2006 also at the tender age of 99 years. They had ten children and are survived by nine, Isabell Bouchard (Andre), Thornhill, Racheal Bartosik (George), Thornhill, Ontario, Joe (Donna Matheson), Sydney River, Eileen, (Chris Stewart), Fredericton, Evelyn Lockert (Bob), Calgary, Allan (Heather Dillon) Sydney River, Duncan (deceased), Matthew (Joanie Wolodka), Sydney River, Daniel (Marg McBride), Sydney and Cathy MacDougall (Claude Nearing), Sydney River. Affectionately referred to as “Grannie”, the pride and joy she had for each of her children, daughter and sons-in-law was extended to her 21 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, many of whom she cared for as young children. Mom is survived also by two sisters, Mary Jane MacMullin, Sydney, and Sally Johnson, Richmond Hill, Ontario, as well as many close nieces and nephews. Besides by her parents, husband, Duncan and infant child, Duncan, she was predeceased by her sister, Margret Williams; brother, Dan Joe; brothers-in-law, Lawrence, Eddie and Angus MacDougall, Roddie Johnson, Eddie Williams and Joe MacMullin; sisters-in-law, Annie Bell Gillis, Jean, Anita, and Bernie MacDougall; great grandchild, Jaelyn Nicole Steele, and best friend/cousin, Mary MacNeil. A quiet, gentle and patient spirit, Mom’s source of happiness came first from her family and then her “new” home that she and Duncan built in 1964, and, where she remained living in until she was 96. While Duncan worked, she worked tirelessly over the years to care and provide for her children often with few amenities and even going out at night to work as a housekeeper, something she was extremely skilled at and loved to do. Socially, she liked to play cards with her sisters, and to visit extended family but was most satisfied to be at home where she welcomed visitors with tea, biscuits and ginger cake to name a few of her baking favorites. Throughout the years there were many gatherings at home with family, friends, music, food and laughter. Sunday and Christmas dinners were rituals shared with family. When the children were younger, Mom and Dad loved to go on picnics, visiting family in Grand Mira North, and weekly drives to relatives in New Waterford and Dominion. Later on, drives to French road to visit their son Joe’s bungalow became a weekly outing. They loved blueberry picking at mom’s old homestead in Oceanview, Mira. They travelled to visit their children, and attend the weddings of their grandchildren and to Boston to visit relatives living there. At Christmas, Mom never failed to send her delicious fruit cakes packed with Cape Breton Post newspaper to her children away and would usually slip “a few cents” to her all her children and grandchildren. Besides keeping her house clean and updated cosmetically, other simple pleasures she so enjoyed was doing yard work, and planting flowers which she continued into her nineties. She faithfully listened to Donnie Campbell on Sunday radio, and had a few favorite TV shows in particular the Young and The Restless Soap that she would share story lines by phone with her daughters; British comedies that she would often be heard, laughing hysterically. Her greeting to everyone “hi dear” will forever remain a cherished echo. She will be missed by many especially all her family who she loved unconditionally. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the wonderful second floor staff of MacGillivray Guest Home who supported Mom in her final days and always left her family feeling confident that she was loved and well cared for. To the kitchen staff for their lovely lunches during our vigil with Mom prior to her passing. To the wonderful Palliative Care team who provided guidance during the last few weeks of Mom’s life. To all who those who visited Mom at MacGillivray and to the residents who became friends to both Mom and her family. Visitation for our mother will be Sunday, October 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, October 30 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River with Father Devereaux and Father Norman McPhee concelebrating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MacGillivray Guest Home. Condolences may be sent to www.twcurry.com <http://www.twcurry.com/>.

Diane Youden Passed on: October 23rd, 2017 With broken hearts we announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt Diane Louise Octavie Youden, age 74, on Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Northside General Hospital. Diane was born in Truro on June 24, 1943, where her dad and mom were stationed (Air Force) during World War II, the daughter of the late George and Marie (Murphy) Benac. She worked as a student in the kitchen of St. Elizabeth Hospital, North Sydney. Diane modeled for a local photographer, and aspired to be a stewardess. That career choice was cut short when she was informed (upon review of her application) she was too “petite” to reach the overhead storage. She went on to graduate from the Nova Scotia Business College in Halifax in 1962, worked ‘away’ in Quebec and came home to North Sydney to work for Salter Agencies and then the Radiology Department at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She fell in love with a young engineer who worked “in the neighborhood”, modifying the Trans Canada Highway. They were married and had one son Chris, who was her pride and joy. In their younger years Diane and Bill lived in Coxheath where Diane was involved with weekly coffee parties, yoga classes and volunteering as a cub leader. She was also a proud Grandma and would light up any time her grandchildren were mentioned. Their artwork was proudly displayed on her walls and her oldest grandson was a comfort to her and Bill when she needed assistance with mobility. She was an aunt who would drop by weekly with love and hot cinnamon rolls, a sister who always had an ear (or two), a mother-in-law proud of the family Chris and Kim are raising. Diane had a deep rooted genetic code for fine things, expensive jewelry, style and sparkle, good food, a hot cup of tea and a belly laugh with family and friends. Diane and her mom were frequent visitors to the old Lobster Pound Restaurant for a “feed”, and loved to go to Munro Park to listen to the music. She was quick to form a friendship with like-minded people. It was not unheard of for the EMT’s to “drive through” to grab her a coffee when she needed it during transport. In later years she re-connected with an old roommate from college and it was like the years between them had never happened. She adored her adopted cat, ‘Garvette”. Diane was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. She will always and forever be remembered and loved. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Bill Youden; her son, Chris (Kim Lantz), North Sydney; her four grandchildren, Brandon, Alexis, Kate and Harrison; her two sisters, Eileen (Reg) Cassidy, Hamilton and Michele (Bill) Nicholson, North Sydney; her three brothers, Eugene (Karen Eavis), Paul (Linda Keeping) and Shawn, all of North Sydney; her sister-in-law, Deanie (John) Morykot, Coxheath; brother-in-law, Peter ‘Sonny’ Landry, Arichat, also many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Margot Landry Visitation for Diane will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com. Rita Dyson Finney It is with great sadness and sorrow; we announce the death of my dear mother, Rita Dyson-Finney, at the age of 92, after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the Northside Guest Community Guest Home where she resided for the past four years. Born in Leigh, Lancashire, England on July 11, 1925, Rita was the only child of the late Thomas and Rita (Walker) Dyson. Rita’s mom died at a very young age and many years later her dad Thomas remarried Rose (Causing) Dyson. Rita came to Canada in 1945, as a young war bride of George Edward Finney of Sydney Mines. Rita kept in touch with many other war brides over the years and they met on a regular basis until many were too old or had passed away themselves. Over the years mom kept herself busy working at Harbourview Hospital as a practical nurse for 18 ½ years and then did some volunteer work at both the Northside General Hospital and the Northside Community Guest Home. Mom also taught many older people who could not read, using the program Each One, Teach One. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, in Sydney Mines until her illness took over. She also loved and belonged to the Children’s Wish Foundation in the very beginning and the Canadian Cancer Society. Mom was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. Leaving to grieve her loss is her only child, Moya Finney-Marsh and son-in-law, Ted Marsh, her two grandsons, Paul Marsh, living in London, England and Adam Marsh, living in Red Deer, Alberta. Mom cherished her two grandsons deeply. Also dear to her was Adam’s wife, Maria Bayona-Marsh and their two children, Vincent and Ty Nathaniel. Meeting her great-grandchildren was so surreal for Mom. Besides her parents, Rita was predeceased by her husband, George Edward Finney. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A funeral service and celebration of Rita’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will take place a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. John Anglican Church Fund, the Children’s Wish Foundation, the S.PC.A. or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com. Edward Aloysius O’Leary Passed on: October 22nd, 2017 On Sunday, October 22 2017, our hearts were broken with the passing of a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Eddie O’Leary. Dad passed away peacefully at the An Cala Palliative Care unit of the CBRH surrounded by his loving family. Minutes before, he had told us he was going to be with his wife Marie. Eddie was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Marie (MacDonald) O’Leary in 2011. Eddie was the youngest of eight children born to the late John and Sarah Jane (Davis) O’Leary of Whitney Pier on June 18, 1938. Eddie is survived by his daughter and best friend, Kathleen Sarah; son-in-law, Roy Edwards, and his two grandchildren that he loved and was so proud of, Bruce Douglas Edwards (Stephanie LeDuc), Michigan and Dena Marie Edwards (Michael Wadden), Sydney River. Dad was thrilled in May of 2017 to become a great-grandfather to Thomas Marc Edwards. Dad also attended the wedding of his granddaughter Dena Marie, October 7, 2017. It was a great day. Eddie is survived also by sisters, Mary (Rod) O’Reilly and Betty (late Will) Pearce, and brother, Bill (late Rita) O’Leary, as well as many nieces and nephews. Eddie was predeceased by sister, Jenny, (Harvey) Morris; brothers, Danny, John Jr. (Kaye) and Cyril. Eddie was also predeceased by Marie’s parents, Ranald (Catherine Mac Gillivary) Mac Donald, and Marie’s brother, Daniel Joseph. Dad lived in East Bay until December 2013 when he moved to Parkland Retirement Living. Eddie enjoyed the past four years at Parkland and made many friends and shared many stories and laughs. Dad was a welder by trade and was a member of the IBEW. In his earlier years, Dad worked at Dominion Tar & Chemical and later at construction jobs throughout Cape Breton including Heavy Water Plants in Glace Bay and Port Hawkesbury. In 1974, Eddie opened East Bay Sno and Water Sports with his wife and business partner, Marie. For 20 years, they sold and serviced boats and snowmobiles at their business located ‘at the corner’. Eddie loved to skate and enjoyed countless hours of playing baseball and hockey. Dad had a genuine love for animals, there was always a family dog. His last three dogs were Samoyeds, all named Nanook. As Bruce and Dena were growing up Eddie enjoyed many hours sitting in gyms, hockey rinks and sport fields cheering them on. He was their biggest fan. Unfortunately, like their grandfather, neither turned out to be “good losers”. Dad had a true love for the water. Dad was an accomplished scuba diver and enjoyed scuba diving all over Cape Breton. He was an excellent swimmer and water skier. Dad and Benny Delorenzo spent many weekends waterskiing in Sydney Harbour and at the East Bay Sandbar jumping ramps and performing water skiing tricks. Eddie and Marie enjoyed many hours boating and fishing on the Bras d’Or lakes. His favorite place was his property at North Side East Bay where he and his family spent many summers. The more company that arrived, the happier he was. No one ever left “the O’Learys” hungry or thirsty. Eddie taught many people how to water ski over the years and would never give up on them, no matter how many attempts it would take to get up on the skis. He also enjoyed his mini golf course, where he had yearly tournaments. Winning several under questionable circumstances. In the winter months, Dad loved snowmobiling with Marie and travelled to snowmobile races all over the Maritimes with his Mercury Snowmobiles. Dad enjoyed fishing all over Cape Breton, although his favorite spot was behind his home in East Bay which he dubbed “O’Leary’s Hole”. Dad had a wit about him and countless expressions he was willing and not afraid to share. Dad loved to laugh and make others smile. He had the ability to have people in tears from laughing. Some of his stories may have even been true. Eddie was a very proud Irish man and had many Irish traits. A special thank you to good friends Terry Casey and Peter Gillis for their friendship to Eddie over the years. We would like to thank the Dialysis nurses for their years of compassionate care. We would also like to thank the Emergency nurses and Palliative care staff for their care and support to Eddie and his family. Unlike the modern Dads, Dad was never one to say ' I love you' but his kindness, generosity and ability to spoil us through the years told us how much we meant to him. We love and miss you Dad. You are a huge part of our lives. You left us with plenty of 'Eddie stories' that will live on. Visitation for the late Edward Aloysius O’Leary will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Thursday, October 26, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. There will also be visitation from 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, East Bay prior to the Funeral Mass on October 27, 2017. Funeral Mass to celebrate the life of Edward O’Leary will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay at 2 p.m., on Friday, October 27, 2017 with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Donations can be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, or SPCA. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family www.pierfuneralhome.com <http://www.pierfuneralhome.com/>. Jahyd leaves behind a host of family, friends, and loved ones. Little sister Eva adored Jahyd. The two spent time crafting, painting, creating and the things sisters do. Little brother Joseph loved snuggles with Jahyd, but lived to tease and make his sister giggle. Aunt Jessica was a true friend, the two loved their long drives, windows down and music up. Nanny Frances was the apple of Jahyd’s eye, the love between couldn’t have been stronger or more pure. Nanny and Poppy (Junior) loved their beautiful girl. Uncle B was a huge part of Jahyd’s life. Kimberly Anne Mackie It is with great sadness that we, the family of Kimberly Anne Mackie say our final farewell after her long, courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Born in 1964, Kim was adored by her parents, the late Robert and Joan (MacNeil) Mackie. As a child, Kim possessed a contagious smile, an entertaining sense of humor and was the apple of her father’s eye. A kinder soul, one would never meet. Kim dedicated her life to others and her memory will be forever cherished by husband, Alan; her pride and joy, her son, Colton, and brothers, Brian (Valerie) and Robert (Ruby). She will be lovingly remembered by her extended family and countless friends. Family and friends were Kim’s love and joy. She loved to try new recipes, spend time in the garden and listen to music. Family vacations on Prince Edward Island and Sussex’s annual hot air balloon festival were warmly retained in her recollections. Throughout her life, Kim maintained an engaging and positive demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. Her signature gift of joy was adored and shared with clients and co-workers of the medical practices in which she worked. Years later, these clients would comment remembering Kim’s kind smile and express their thoughts and prayers for Kim throughout her challenging journey.
