Louise passed away peacefully at The Cove Guest Home, Sydney, NS two days following her 98th birthday. Born in Westmount, NS on November 21, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Emanuelle and Clara (LaPaix) LeDue. She was predeceased by her husband, Dominic Sollazzo; sons, Frank and Tony, and daughters, Lucy Emanuele and Anna Sollazzo; brothers, Charlie and Tommy LeDue; son-in-law, Benny DeLorenzo; great grandson, Gregory Emanuele, and her special niece, Victoria Hutchings. In 1934 she married the love of her life, Dominic. They had five children and celebrated 67 years together. Affectionately known as Nanny to her family, she was a very giving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbour and friend. She was a strong, amazing woman with a kind and gentle soul and a heart of gold. Her passion for life and wonderful sense of humour were infectious. She had a strong faith in God and was a member of the Italian church and the Italian Cultural Association. She loved spending time with her family and hosted many family gatherings in her home, spending hours preparing gourmet meals including her famous spaghetti and meatballs -- truly a family favourite. She was also known for her delicious fish cakes which she happily distributed throughout the neighbourhood on a regular basis. She loved to travel “destination anywhere”. She would often say “let’s go for a little drive today” which meant you could end up in East Bay, Ben Eoin, Big Pond or Cheticamp visiting family and friends. She took every opportunity to visit her daughter Lucy in the USA and she would also visit with her relatives in St. Pierre et Miquelon where she enjoyed singing and speaking French, her first language. She loved children and in her later years she babysat for the Bennett and Hollohan families. She also loved to socialize with her friends over a good cup of tea. Yes according to Nanny tea went with everything on every occasion. In her younger years, she was an avid swimmer and never missed an opportunity to tell us of the time that she swam across Sydney Harbour. She loved her pets, including her budgie birds and her dogs, and some may remember her daily walks on Dixon Avenue with her pups, Sandy, Princess and Muffy. She was a grandmother extraordinaire to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Sleep-overs at Nanny's are some of our best childhood memories. She gave us all so much love, hugs and kisses enough to last a lifetime. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her and will remain in our hearts forever. She is survived by her daughter, Rose DeLorenzo; daughter-in-law, Dolly Sollazzo; son-in-law, Andrew Emanuele; grandchildren, Dominic (Fatima), Andy (Brenda) and Frank (Sue) Emanuele; Silvana (Kevin), Toni (John), Dina (Martin), Benita, Benito (Gail) and Marco (Shelly) DeLorenzo; and Gina, Robina (Larry), Louann and Kenneth (Andrea) Sollazzo; 30 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews of the LeDue, Hutchings and Sollazzo families. Neila Ann Clark (Sparling) Passed in: Sydney, Nova Scotia Passed on: November 23rd, 2017 How do we begin to say goodbye to someone who means so much… With broken hearts we, the family of Neila Ann (Sparling) Clark, 54, of Sydney, announce her untimely passing surrounded by her loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on November 23, 2017 despite the heroic efforts of the medical team involved in her care. She was the daughter of George Sparling and the late Pauline Mac Gillivary. Until falling ill, Neila was employed with the Membertou Gaming Commission. Previous to this she had a long history working in the customer service field where she developed many long lasting friendships. Her favourite place was the beach where she could spend hours at a time reading a good book. There was nothing Neila loved more than being with her family; especially cooking with her sisters. Her other passion was shopping; she always loved to find the perfect gift. Neila shared many crazy adventures with her “sister friend”, her partner in crime, her snoop sister, Gina. Over the past two years Neila endured many health issues and challenges that she faced with courage and determination. We all admired her positive outlook and strength. Despite her own struggles she was always concerned about the well-being of her family and friends. Neila will be forever missed by her most precious gift and the center of her world, her son, Christopher Clark (Jacqueline); beloved grandson, Cameron; and her furbaby, Moose. She is also survived by her partner, John MacDonald of Westmount. Neila leaves behind her father, George Sparling (Clara); and her four sisters, Darlene (Colby), Charlene (John), Gina (Gary), and Nancy (Kelly). Martha Gillis Born In: New Waterford, Nova Scotia Passed on: November 21st, 2017 It is with broken hearts we give back to God one of his most beautiful creations, Martha M. Gillis, on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Duncan and Mary Jennet (Hawley) Currie. Mom was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, as well as at one time, an active member of the C.W.L. Her faith and love for God never wavered and her greatest pride was being blessed with a wonderful husband and her 12 babies. Mom never felt she had to leave home to experience an entertaining evening, as we always had something going on to keep her amused and busy. But, she always considered this a blessing because giving to us all she had of herself and keeping us safe, was her greatest joy. Her favorite saying was that she would do it all over again and not change a single thing. Right up until the end, her fear was not for herself, but for leaving us with broken hearts and her not being here to help us through the loss. Her kind, compassionate and loving nature is something we, her children, will both mourn and rejoice for the rest of our lives. May 'God Bless you Mom' and may he keep you safe. Martha is survived by eight of her nine daughters, Mary (Paul) Currie, Lydia MacLeod, Patricia (Eric) Sutherland, Pauline Aucoin, Josie (Blair) Locke, Susie (Paul) Hines, Jeannie (Jamie) Stevens and Marcie (Joe) Williams; three sons, Sandy (Janice), Bobby (Laurie) and Duncan (Lynne); 29 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Mom was predeceased by the love of her heart, her husband, Alexander Gillis; her daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Patrick Usher; son-in-law, Donald MacLeod and two great-grandchildren, Marie and Bergen. Mom was also predeceased by sisters, Margaret Boutilier, Mary Anna Murray and brothers, William, John, Duncan, Gerald, and Al. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Visitation will be held today, Friday, November 24, 2017 from 5-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 25, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. As an expression of sympathy for Mom, donations in her memory may be made to support 'Nora's House' or a charity of your choice. MALCOLM MACDONALD Born In: NEW WATERFORD, Nova Scotia Born: June 20th, 1928 Passed in: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Passed on: November 15th, 2017 Malcolm passed away in the loving arms of his daughters at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC, on November 15, 2017 after suffering a stroke. Malcolm “Mac” or “Cuddles” as he was affectionately known was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia June 20, 1928, to Angus A. and Honora MacDonald. He was predeceased by his six siblings; and his infant son, Gerard born 1960. He is survived by his cherished wife of 66 years, Mary (nee Abbass) of Victoria; his daughters, Honora Johannesen (Sigurd) of Victoria, Lillian Szpak (Robert) of Langford, BC, Ann-Marie (Alisa) of Montreal; his son, John-Hugh (Mary) of Orillia, ON, and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mac was the kindest, most generous, sensitive, wisest and wittiest man there ever was. A coal miner and boxer from a tough Cape Breton town, he put himself through St. Francis Xavier University while working in “the pit” and was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954. He served at Namao, AB; Baden-Soellingen, Germany; Centrallia, ON; Hamilton, ON where he earned his MBA from MacMaster University; Kingston, ON where he taught at Royal Military College and Queen’s University; and Ottawa, ON before launching a sterling career with the Department of External Affairs where, during his final working years he travelled to nearly every Canadian embassy abroad, usually with Mary – his “little dark-haired nurse” – by his side. In retirement he devoted himself to humanitarian work with the Canadian International Demining Corps, and together with Mary served meals at the Shepherds of Good Hope soup kitchen in Ottawa. A voracious reader and keen thinker, Mac was respected, admired and much sought-after for personal and professional advice by all who knew him. He instilled in his children, grand and great-grandchildren a sense of adventure, humour, self-reliance, respect for diversity, resiliency and optimism, and that each were special and loved uniquely. He honored Mary with a life well-lived, full of love, adventure, romance, devotion and dignity. The family wishes to thank the Emergency Room staff at RJH who, along with Dr. Fred Voon provided the kindest and most comforting care. We would also like to thank Drs. Michelle Fretz and Laura Farrell for their unfailing expert care and compassion. 3. P.S. If anyone knows of Richard Campbell, a reseacher listed on the Mullgen site: "Looking for Archibald and Catherine Campbell of Kilninian and Kilmore. Children are Duncan b:1766, Angus b:1768, Alexander b:20 June 1771 d:1843 Islay m: Mary Sinclair 1796, Dugal b:1778 and Janet b:1773." Please contact me via my email address. The registered email address is no longer active ... Thankyou. -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Campbell Sent: Friday, November 17, 2017 11:25 PM To: sct-arl-tiree@rootsweb.com ; sct-arg-coll@rootsweb.com ; sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com ; ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com ; can-ns-pictou@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCT-ARL-TIREE ] Carmichael Tiree, Mull & Nether Lorn Hello Louise, I saw that yesterday evening before I fell into bed ... now I'm available to put my mind back into the subject. 1. The first point was that on p23 Argyll Estate Instructions (1792), Eric Cregeen states: "Gortendonuil (i.e. Barrapol and Kenovar) was now in tack to Archibald of Frackadale; Ruaig still in Duncan Campbell of Treshnish's hands." Both absent tacksmen at that point. In the 1789 Mull list I see in Treshnish: Archibald, tacksman (45), Duncan (13), Angus (12), Alexr (8) & Dugald (1), Mrs Campbell & her dau and in Freckadale (sp): John (54), Archibald (11), James (6), Duncan (12) --- strange order, Mrs Campbell & 5 daus +++ including a John Carmichael +++ ... so not sure what happened between 1789 & 1792 Next step is to go back to the original Tiree tacks ... of (Campbell of) Frackadale & (Campbell of) Treshnish, both noted by Cregeen as expiring 1796 ... perhaps initially let to the fathers of the tacksmen in Mull - 1789 ... ??? However in 1800, the Duke's Instructions state: p 51 "7. As I have set the farms of Barapole and Kenovar presently possessed by Archibald, Frackadale, to 16 small tenants, who are to enter at next Whitsunday, you must take measures for removing the one and introducing the others at that term, and as a great many additional houseswill be wanted for the accomodation of these new tenants ... ... My own opinion and wish is that these farms should be divided into 16 different possessions so every man may have his own separate farm to manage and improve in his own way ..." Anyway, I just wonder if at least some the families there in Gortendonuil (1792) are related to either the Frackadale or Treshnish Mull Campbell families. It would seem logical to stay tacksman on the Mull estate while at the same time providing for the extended family ... so good reason to be absent. I find the Campbell family there that I've been researching, particularly Alexr C, who went to Pictou, Whycocomagh, Argyle Bay and and who's death based on his will was in Little Narrows, Cape Breton. What has surprised me to this point was that I cannot see this family on Tiree in the 1779 list. The only Campbell family there that I noted in 1792 ... just my notes ..., unfortunately not exhaustive: John Campbell 64 Isabel Campbell 55 --- it appears that in this list like the 1776 & 1779 lists the maiden names were used --- so this is not likely to be the Campbell/McArthur family in Sandaig Alexander C 22 Donald C 16 Ann C 18 Mary C 7 Alexander is possibly the one who is referred to in the Argyll Estate Instructions a number of times. The reason I say this is that I have his marriage identified shortly after in 1795 with Christy Campbell in Caolas, Coll ... my own family were tacksmen there & then. John Campbell (engineer and superintendant) of St. Paul's Island, CB, NS certainly descends from this family (eldest son). A document I recently received from Canada was written by a person who claimed to be the 3rd cousin of his grandchildren. The person knew details of that family that I can confirm. The beginning of her doc refers to Malagawatch Campbells who came from Coll (via Tobermory) sailed on the Dunlop 1820 to Pictou ... Neil & James Campbell who married two MacLean sisters Christy & Mary respectively they settled at The Boom / Big Harbour Island / St Georges Bay / now West Bay ... on the sailing they were accompanied by widowed cousin Farquar and his bro John and two sisters Sarah & Katy, they went to PEI ... "All the Coll families took up side by side MacKenzies, MacLeans, MacDonalds and MacKinnons ... ". I'm now in contact with Campbell descendants of that line, and we are arranging Y-DNA testing via Kevin Campbell's CAMPBELL GROUP study ... We don't know if the doc is 100% accurate, but as I cannot find these families on Coll, I'm just wondering if some went to Coll from Tiree before finally leaving ... work in progress. On P65, footnote by Cregeen (Argyll Estate Instructions), he notes the extreme discontent and resistance of the tenants to the new organisation of the ex-Gortendonnel property. Factor McLaurin: "The tenants declared that they would emigrate to America rather than to give up their runrig system." This situation led to the 1803 petition by them to Argyll below. Moving back a step, ... The clincher for an Alexr Campbell in Gortendonel in 1802s relationship to that family is on P72 "... and though his brothers-in-law, tenants in Coll ..." You were saying: "Another interesting point is that in the Argyll Estate Instructions, it is stated on page..." You have me curious what the interesting point was! By the way, I have a particular interest in knowing who various Tacksmen were on Tiree, Mull, and Coll and environs during various periods. Some years ago, Flo Straker and myself transcribed many of the oldest rent rolls and other documents circa 1600s (some of these are hosted on www.tireegenealogy.com). It was always a surprise to see who held which Tacks when. And a mystery who some of the far-awayTacksmen were. Strange locations attached to their names, so unrecognizable, especially in old handwriting, that we simply had to guess. Is there a source that you know of where Tacksmen for these Islands are recorded over the centuries? Probably not, but I thought it might be worth asking someone who knows more than I do about various land ownerships and tacks. 1. Re: [NS-CB] [SCT-ARL-TIREE ] Carmichael Tiree, Mull & Nether Lorn
    2. Andrew Campbell
    3. Hello Louise, I saw that yesterday evening before I fell into bed ... now I'm available to put my mind back into the subject. The clincher for an Alexr Campbell in Gortendonel in 1802s relationship to that family is on P72 "... and though his brothers-in-law, tenants in Coll ..." (the then tenants in Coll referred to were well and truly proven with Y-DNA known to a common ancestor Donald Campbell circa 1740). Alexr C is noted as holding 8 mail lands, double the planned size, which might explain why there was 15 tenants listed in the 1803 petition rather than the planned 16... "Petition to Argyll of 1803 by 15 tenants: Alexander Campbell (signs as Alexr Campbell) Donald Campbell Murdoch Campbell Donald Campbell Jnr Angus Campbell Farquard Campbell Hector Campbell Angus Sinclair Malcolm Sinclair John MacInnish John Carmichael Donald MacInnish Donald Campbell Allan MacLean and Neil McDonald all tenants in your Grais Lands of Barrapole and Kenovair in the Island of Tyree." So ... quite a lot there. Don't hesitate to contact me for more details. It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of David MacRitchie in Dartmouth on Sunday November 12, 2017. Born in Sydney, NS on December 20, 1961, he was the son of Patricia MacRitchie and the late Kenneth MacRitchie. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB in 1984 and then pursued his Master of Business Administration at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax through part time studies and completing in 1997. He began his career in the automotive industry at MacPhee Pontiac in Dartmouth in 1991. With the support of Al MacPhee, Dave bought and ran Northumberland Pontiac in New Glasgow for 10 years from 1998 to 2008, growing the business and maintaining an active role in the community. In 2009, Dave returned to Dartmouth to work as an automotive consultant and was instrumental in several car dealership mergers and acquisition. In 2011, Dave joined the Steele Automotive group as their Chief Operating Officer and later as the President. He was very proud of the growth and success of the group over the past seven years. Never one for the limelight, Dave led by example. He treated staff, suppliers, and customers always with respect and with competence and always guided by the principle to do the right thing. His work ethic and attention to detail set a high bar. In addition to his leadership role at Steele, Dave was the President of the Nova Scotia Automotive Dealers Association and heavily involved as a director in the Canadian Automotive Dealers Association. Outside of work, Dave could successfully put his hand to just about anything – plumbing, electrical, engines, landscaping, and weather forecasting. He rarely sat still for long, except perhaps to catch a game of the Green Bay Packers. He applied his skills to significant affect - from building a rocking horse for his new niece, to the construction of a cottage on a shoestring budget, to completely rebuilding a 40-foot steel-hulled sailboat that we purchased after it had, for all purposes, sunk. That same boat provided some of the best memories we spent as a family, sailing from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas and back in 2008-2009 – no small feat with a 9 and 12-year-old and a Labrador retriever. We had absolute faith in his abilities when we were at sea on our sailboat, a testament to the seafaring skills he had honed sailing in Atlantic Canada. (We also did have a memorable practice run as a couple (along with two dogs) in 1993-1994.) Dave loved the beautiful home we had nestled away in the woods on Pictou Harbour and could be found on most weekends plowing snow, mowing grass, trimming trees or puttering in the garage. Or advising (to mixed success) his two strong-willed daughters that he loved so much. Dave was someone who just got things done and done well. He was quick to share his efforts with others at work and in his family life. His counsel and his hard work will be forever missed. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Cathy (Hill), his daughters, Annie and Kristen, his mother Patricia MacRitchie, his brother John (Ingrid van Leeuwen), niece Margaret. Also surviving are his aunts Ily Connell and Marilyn and Francis MacLeod and many cousins. He was predeceased by his father Kenneth, and his Aunts Mary and Violet “Tooty” MacRitchie. Funeral service will be held 12:30pm, Thursday in First Presbyterian Church, Pictou with Jacquie Ross officiating. Reception will follow the service in the deCoste Entertainment Center, Pictou. Donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Ethel Marie Adelia Holland Born: August 11th, 1936 Passed on: November 13th, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the news that our mother Ethel Marie Adelia Holland, 81 passed away on November 13, 2017. Born August 11, 1936 she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Annie Lewis. She is survived by her siblings, Donnie Lewis, Earle Lewis, Rena Carew, Sandy Lewis and Leo Lewis; children, Catherine Holland, Mary Holland, Tim Holland, Earle (Shannon) Holland and Angela (Mark) Crittenden. She had 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her stepmother, Eileen; sons, Paul and Bert; siblings, Arthur, Anna, Tom and Charlie. Mom spent the past year in the Cove Guest Home, where she was taken care of by their wonderful staff. They all seemed to appreciate her sauciness, which means she must have liked them too. She lived in the pier for 50 years previous to that and I think everyone knew her, as we often heard “You’re Ethel’s, aren’t you?” She spent many years playing darts at the legion and also sang with the legionnaires. She was happiest when she was out Irish Vale, in the home she lived in when she was younger, playing crib in the kitchen looking over the Bras d’Or. She will be remembered for her charismatic personality, sharp tongue and her ability to make people smile. She was a witty woman and always quick with a comeback. We would like to thank all of the wonderful care workers who helped take care of our mother over the past few years. It is you who made her life as comfortable as it was. We are forever grateful to you all. Visitation will be held 6-9 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017 with a funeral service 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 18 both at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. Words of comfort may be sent to her family by visiting www.twcurry.com <http://www.twcurry.com/>. Enid Marion Johnstone It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Enid Marion Johnstone, announce her passing on November 12, 2017. Enid lived a long and active life, working at Wright’s Furniture until its closure and then at Oak Hall. She lived for 94 years at the family home, 31 Forbes Court before moving into Parkland. She enjoyed walking, swimming, skating, cross-country skiing, playing cards, travelling, the casino and spending time with family and friends at the bungalow in East Bay. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Robert (Marilyn) Johnston, Phylis (Walter) Lecher, Eric ‘Sandy’ Johnston, Linda (David) Williams, Jean (Blaine) Knott, Fred (Leo) Johnston; four grandnieces and seven grandnephews and 15 great-grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Robert R. Johnston; mother Annie May Johnston (Barker); brothers Robert, Fredrick and Alexander. She was the last member of her immediate family. A celebration of Enid’s life will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 17 at S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra Street, Sydney, Rev. Sheldon Chant to officiate.
