Scott Joseph Sampson On Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, our family's special brother Scott J. Sampson, at 43 years of age, died suddenly but peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the C.B. Regional Hospital. Scott is survived by his father, Charles Sampson; and Glen whom he always called his "favorite" brother, and his wife, Catherine and their two sons, Benjamin and Maxwell of Vancouver, B.C.; Scott's mother, Sally (Farrell) Sampson, predeceased him on May 1, 2017. Scott was a 1996 graduate of Riverview High School Special Education program. Scott's achievement was celebrated by the Canadian Down Syndrome Society by featuring his graduation picture on their 1999 calendar cover. The Special Education program taught Scott to read, which he did find great pleasure in, given his crippling arthritis. Scott participated fully in all our family's activities - including his political responsibility where he insisted on entering the voting area unassisted to mark his ballot. Scott was also one of the first members of the Cape Breton Down Syndrome Society that still is going strong today due to very capable young parents. Cremation has taken place through T.W. Curry and a memorial service will be announced later. Like other Down syndrome members of this community, Scott's only demands were to be loved, accepted and appreciated for his unqualified peaceful values of honesty and purity. Scott's gift of giving was unconditional. He loved to play music, attending family birthdays, watching his favorite TV channel 47 on Eastlink. Christmas time was especially enjoyable for Scott as he celebrated everyone's happiness over that festive season. As a caring human being, Scott's life brought out the best in most people he encountered. Today, these human beings are aborted in many "progressive" countries according to a UN report. Decision makers have determined that a form of eugenics is necessary to try and eliminate Down syndrome from this world for purely convenience or alleged economic factors. To remove people with Down syndrome is surely a world not worth living in. And, what other group of society considered on economic or social grounds will our decision makers focus next on eliminating? His smile, his warm laugh, and his kind heart will be remembered by all he touched. His strength of character, his compassion, and his energy will continue to be felt well into the future. He was truly a beacon of light in the darkness and a special song in the silence. Daniel James MacDougall died peacefully on November 28th, 2017, at his lifetime home in Little Judique, Nova Scotia, surrounded by his loving family. Danny was born on April 27th, 1948 in Sydney Mines and was the son of the late Daniel Hugh and Marie (Steele) MacDougall. At the age of two he went to live with his father's cousin, Annie (MacDougall) and her husband, Alex James MacDonald of Little Judique, where they raised Danny as one of their own. Danny and the love of his life, Anne, brought up their five beautiful children in that same home overlooking his much loved Little Judique Harbour. This harbour, along with the ocean, the beaches, the rivers, and the lakes, was a magical place for Danny, always bringing him a sense of joy and peace. He loved sharing all his special places with his beloved grandchildren and in his retirement he spent many happy hours teaching them to enjoy the simple things in life, from skipping stones at the beach, to fishing in the pond, to riding four-wheelers on the Ceilidh Trail. The harbour also instilled in Danny a strong work ethic. It was here that he fished for lobster as a boy and a young man. The natural world always played an important role in his life. He eventually had a long and rewarding career of 32 years with the Department of Highways and Transportation where he gained many friends and earned a reputation as a hard working and skilful employee, capable of handling every aspect of his job. Looking at Danny's life experiences, it is not difficult to understand where he gained his appreciation of family and friends, his love of nature, and his lifelong passion for boats, trucks, cars, and most of all, his precious yellow VW bug. Always a gentle, giving, and compassionate soul, Danny was deeply involved in his community of Port Hood, Cape Breton, where he was loved by so many. As a proud member of the Knight's of Columbus, he worked at the local food bank; he was also a valued member of the Port Hood Fire Department. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Anne (Gillis); by their children, Alex,(Lisa Sutherland - Daniel, Rachel, Brittney, Summer); Stephen (Meghan Butler Grantham - Riley, Logan, Dylan); Cynthia Fitzner ( Cory- Liam, Emma); Paul (Marcelle Gaudet); and by his stepmother, Minnie MacDougall; his sisters, Thelma MacIntyre and Elaine Chisholm. Danny was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Shelley; his birth parents; his foster parents; brothers, Frankie, Jimmy, Roderick, Douglas, and Jimmy; and sister, Theresa. Visitation for Danny was held in the Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Friday, December 1st. Funeral Mass was held in Saint Peter's Church, Port Hood, on Saturday, December 2nd, with Father Vincent VanZutphen officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Inverness Palliative Care Society, the Port Hood Resting Place, or any non-profit pet rescue organization. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Sabine (Roach) and Albert Leblanc. In her early years, Shirley worked at Harry Gaum's store and Novarite Dry Cleaners as a seamstress. They must have taught her well as she went on to make beautiful quilts in later years. It was with her first husband, Carl where she spent most of her working years in the family business Drinovz Catering. They also operated cafeterias at the Heavy Water plant and the former UCCB (CBU). A typical week would involve managing the cafeterias while also catering to several functions through the week and more on the weekends all while raising a family! Shirley made many lasting friendships through the UCCB community and had a special place in her heart for "the girls" - the many women who worked in the business over the years. Two special "girls" were Lena Graham and "Sis" Murran who were true "friends to the end". After the loss of her first husband, Shirley was consoled by Dan. A bond developed and they would marry - they truly enjoyed their golden years and had much happiness. Dan forever treated her like a lady and we are grateful for this. Family meant everything to Shirley and she loved cooking great meals when gatherings occurred. Nothing made her happier than the company of her grand and great grandchildren. During her illness, Ma was a very private person but maintained a sense of humor. What she endured to the end is testament to how strong a woman she was. She is survived by her children, Carol Ann, Kitchener, Ont, Walter (Rosemary), Dartmouth, NS, Andrew, Saint John, NB, David (Tarryn), Lingan, NS, Darren, Sydney River, NS and Robert (Bernadette), New Waterford, NS; step-children, Mike, Kelowna, BC, Patricia, Toronto, On, Corinne, Ottawa, ON; Grandchildren, Jacqueline, New Waterford, NS, Dana, Kitchener, ON, Matthew, Oromocto, NB, Mitchell, Dartmouth, NS and Carly, Nainimo, BC. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brother, Wilfred (Joanne), Barrie, ON, her second husband, Dan Nolan, first husband, Carl Drinovz and daughter, Lynn. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, at 11a.m. in the funeral home Chapel with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy for Mom, donations in her memory may be made to The Kidney Foundation or to the Cancer Society. DOUCET It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, David Gordon Doucet, 54, of Margaree Forks. Dave was born and raised in Margaree Forks and was the youngest child of the late Arsene and Regina Doucet. Following his graduation from Mabou Consolidated High School, Double D went out west to work with his brother Arnold. He then returned to his beloved Margaree prior to pursuing his career as an engineer with the Canadian Coast Guard in 1985, where he worked for 29 years. He was also a proud member of the Margaree Forks Volunteer Fire Department and Margaree Kinsmen Club where his work ethic, generosity, kindness, and free spirit was contagious. DD was humble and chose a simple life. He enjoyed listening to good tunes and being outdoors more than anything else. Swimming and canoeing in the river, hiking to Egypt Falls, bonfires, beach days, and fishing at the pond with as many kids and dogs as he could round up were his all time favourites. He never wasted a moment outside rain or shine. David preferred to do his shopping at second hand stores and the local dump. You could be sure to find him out for a walk in “downtown” Margaree at anytime of the day in true David fashion, with accessories that included, but were not limited to: his bichon frise Rory, a hockey stick, as well as headlamp and backpack. Uncle Davie was everyone's go-to man. He found a use for every gadget and could fix anything and everything. He excelled at mowing lawns, growing strawberries, walking dogs, cleaning pools (with his homemade pool vacuum), putting up Christmas lights, and befriending absolutely everyone. David's five children were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from him over the years, among them: if the car can get you from a to b, it's working just fine. River showers are the best showers. If you see a guy with a boom-box on his shoulder, ask to be his roommate because, if you're lucky enough, he might just become your best friend (we love you Steve!) and finally to always lend a helping hand. He is survived by his loving wife, Kelly and their five children, Haley, Thea, Brielle, Brayden, and Ali, siblings Marie Copley (Eddie), Inverness, Marcel, West Lake Ainslie, Jacqueline Prieur (Adrian) Angus, Ont., Brian (Therese) Margaree Forks, Arnold (Bernice) Halifax, and sister-in-law Gloria Doucet, Lower Sackville, as well as many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends too numerous to list but never forgotten, and strangers/hitchhikers he would love to have met. David was predeceased by parents Arsene and Regina, brother Alcide, infant son Nate, sister-in-law Charlotte Doucet, mother-in-law Wilma Cameron, and grand-nephew, Callum Cameron. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to Talbot House or the Margaree Forks Volunteer Fire Department as well as doing an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness in his name. “Carry on” Dad, there was never a dull moment with you. Enjoy your final adventure over the rainbow. We love you forever. Visitation will take place at St. Michaels Hall in East Margaree on November 28th, 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Michael's Church on November 29th at 11:00 a.m. FRASER The family of Malcolm (Bud) Clement Fraser is saddened to announce his passing on November 25th, 2017. Father of Darrell, (predeceased) and Shane (Lisa) of Mississauga, ON., and was predeceased by a son at birth. Grandfather of Benjamin, Sarah, and Matthew. Isaac was born in East Skye Glen, to the late John Angus and Janet (Young) MacInnis. He was a beloved brother of Donald (Anna) of East Skye Glen; Margaret, Margaree Harbour. Isaac then moved to Toronto where he met and married his true love, Anne. Anne and Isaac lived and lovingly raised a family in Long Branch and in Mississauga. Every summer they would travel “down home” to Cape Breton to visit everyone in Dundee and Skye Glen, and whoever had been “Home” at the time. Throughout the year they would make weekend trips to Sudbury and West Virginia, where fond and happy memories were made. They were members of St. Paul’s (Long Branch) and Bethel (Milton) United Churches. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and also bowled a perfect five pin game of 450 points. After working at Otis Canada Inc. for over 30 years as an elevator installer on many of the large skyscrapers in Toronto it was time to retire and move “home”. In 1995 Isaac and Anne built a home in West Skye Glen on land that Isaac worked on when he was young. He was a member of the Brotherhood and Stewart United Church in Whycocomagh and participated in many community activities. Isaac was devoted to all of his family and friends, and someone who would always be the first to help out. He will always be in our hearts and will be truly missed. James Hiscott Passed on: November 25th, 2017 We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Jimmy Hiscott on Saturday, November 25, 2017 after a devastating battle with Cancer. Jimmy passed away at home surrounded by family and friends, just as he lived his life. Born in North Sydney December 27, 1944 he was the son of the late James and Madeline (Caines) Hiscott. Jimmy was a musician extraordinaire! At the age of 17, he was instrumental in starting up the ever loved “Rocking Saints”, a band that spanned his lifetime bringing great entertainment and fun to thousands over the years. To the delight of many, after a bit of a hiatus, the band was rekindled back in 2000. Doing something he loved so much brought him great joy. Jimmy dedicated 50 years of his life to the construction industry, working right up to the day of his diagnosis. He was a talented leader in the field and made many of great friends over the years who stood by his side until the end. It meant a lot to him! Jimmy lived his life to the fullest; he was an avid skier, enjoyed sailing, watching lively local hockey, playing his keyboard or riding the open roads on his motorcycle. His greatest of all pleasures was his family time spent on their Bras d’Or Lake property. He was an enthusiastic family man who planned most of our outings, he was our problem solver. It didn’t matter if it was camping, boating, getting the Christmas tree, washer toss or fixing our car “Dad was our go to man” we are going to miss him beyond measure! Leaving to mourn with loving memories is his wife, Glenda; his children, Kristopher (Amber), Kelly (Kevin), Aaron Crouse (Steve), Virginia Chapman Carey (John); grandchildren, Eva Hiscott, Brianna, Gabrielle and Emily Crouse and Amanda, Alyssa and Sean Carey; sister, Marie MacEachern (Rhiney); brothers, Peter and Clifford Hiscott; mother-in-law, Shirley MacLean (Blowers); sister-in-law, Donna Bonnar (Milton); brothers-in-law, George and Brian Bona (Francine); special niece and nephew, Kyle and Katie Bonnar who were like his own, and Jimmy’s wide circle of friends. Besides his parents, Jimmy was predeceased by his son, Danny; brother, Gordon, and father-in-law, Joseph Bona. We would like to thank Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Dr. Phill, Dr. Archibald, Dr. Abboud, Palliative Care Nurse Michelle Finney, VON of Cape Breton and staff of 4D Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Your kindness and compassion will not be forgotten. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Jimmy’s life will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Father Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
