One of his first big trips was during the depression, his sister found him a job in Montreal, when he arrived in Montreal by train, there were so many lights he thought he was in heaven. He was in Montreal when WWII called for Canadian Soldiers. He volunteered to join the # 6 Royal Canadian Army Medical Core. We were all so proud to tell the nursing staff Dad was a medic and he made .50 cents a day trades pay. During the war years he met our Mom, Celia Corrigan in Glasgow Scotland. They were married for over sixty years. Dad settled his family in Ashby, and was employed as the Janitor of Constantine School and St. Joseph School. He was a faithful member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, and in his days with no voice we could see he was praying. During his more active days he enjoyed attending meetings at Ashby Legion and the Comrade Ship of his fellow Veterans. We were so proud when he was awarded the French metal from France and the Ashby Legion hosted a tea in his honour. He particularly treasured his friends John, Gloria and Patsy Fields. During his retirement years he loved his cottage in Margaree. He was always amazed with the natural beauty, and attending ceilidhs in Inverness and Mabou, with his son Paul. Dad is survived by his children, Marie, Margaret, Joseph all of Sydney and Rev Paul Smith of Vancouver; grandchildren, Jennifer (Stephen), Sudbury, ON, Kelly, Sydney, Logan, Port Hawkesbury, as well as great grandchildren. Dad had a special love for Shannon and Meaghan Grant and Robert and Elyse who were grandchildren by choice. He is also survived by Karen MacEachern, wonderful mother to his grandson. He was predeceased by his wife, Celia; son, Francis; daughter, Katherine and granddaughter, Shelley; sisters, Martha, Mary Jessie and Mary Catherine, and brothers, Donald Joseph, John Alex, John Francis and Freddie. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Thanks to the staff of the An Cala Unit for giving our old Soldier a quiet, peaceful place to lay his head, during his last days. It will not be forgotten. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. He passed away peacefully at the age of 85 surrounded by his loving family. Papa will be forever missed by his eight daughters, Donna (Junior) Dunphy, Wanda (Lisa) MacKinnon, Marcena (Wilson) Boutilier, Jackie (Timmy) Timmons, Ann Aleta (Roger ‘Dickie’) MacKinnon, Kathleen (Allen James) MacDonald, Debbie (Eldon) Timmons and Juanita (Aundre) MacKinnon; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandsons, as well as extended family, “across the path”. He is also survived by sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends. Papa will also be missed by his “favorite daughter” Beatrice who was very special to him and Mama. Also last but not least Dr. Nicola Smith who held a special friendship and bond with Papa. He considered her part of his extended family. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by four children in infancy as well as numerous brothers and sisters. Papa loved the outdoors and spent most of his career as a Fisherman/Trapper. He had a great love for cars, his favorite being his old 68’ Pontiac. He also enjoyed a good “feed” of fish, especially when Dylan would come across the path with trout. Birthdays were a special time of year for Papa, especially when it came to his beloved Emma, who he celebrated faithfully with for the past 19 years. Nothing compared to the love he had for his soulmate, his wife, Marcella, who predeceased him last year on December 13, 2016. They were inseparable throughout their lives. He was known to have spent time in the garden with her planting flowers which most likely would have been black-eyed susans seeing they were her favorite. They were always together, always happy, and always smiling. There will be a void in the family without them, but they are together again, happy and smiling, we are sure of it. Funeral Service, celebrating the lives of John Alexander and Marcella MacKinnon will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Asby Bay United Church with Rev. Carolyn Sharpe officiating. The family wishes to extend their sincerest thanks to the Nurses and Staff of the Buchanan Memorial Hospital and to the many Doctors who cared for Papa and Mama over the years. Also to the Home care staff (especially Nancy) and the Continuing Care Nurses, for the outstanding care and compassion shown to Papa and our family. Also, to Dr. Nicola Smith, you went above your call of duty for Papa and Mama. There are no words to express how thankful we are for all you have done. You are truly exceptional. VAN DEN HEUVEL With gratitude for a long and happy life, our family announces the death of our beautiful mother, Ardina Wilhelmina (Selten) van den Heuvel, age 102, Whycocomagh, affectionately known as Moeke; she was everybody’s Moeke. Ardina is survived by her sister Wilhelmina Raaymakers, Holland; and children Josie (Joe) Peeters, Brook Village; Denny (Mary) van den Heuvel, Springfield; John (Hilde) van den Heuvel, Springfield; Corry van den Heuvel, Brook Village; Cathy (Colie) Campbell, Brook Village; Nelly Munro, Whycocomagh; and Garry (Janie) van den Heuvel, Brook Village. Ardina is also survived by her 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren who have all been blessed by the great love she had for them. Ardina was predeceased by her parents, Johannes and Catharina (Verstegen) Selten; her husband, William van den Heuvel, and their infant daughter Catharina van den Heuvel; her sister, Nelly Selten; her brothers, Jo and Coos Selten; her son-in-law Graham Munro; and her daughter-in-law Shirlene (Mac Kinnon) van den Heuvel. Ardina was born in Langenboom, Holland, on December 13th, 1914. She grew up in her beloved Holland and was one of five children. Ardina married William van den Heuvel in 1947 and together they had eight children. With the intent of providing a farm for their children, if they so desired, they moved to Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, in 1953. Ardina was everything good; a devoted wife, a most loving mother, a storybook grandmother, and treasured great-grandmother. She taught us that the bond that makes a true family is to love one another, respect each other, and find joy in each other’s lives. In her autumn years, Ardina’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her endless joy giving her reason to go on living. Just as she lived her life, gently, peacefully, and with great dignity, our Moeke left this world surrounded by love. Putting our faith in God to grant her eternal peace, we her children, will honour her memory by following her example of kindness, honesty, love of neighbour, and her love of God. Ardina’s family received friends at the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh, on Sunday, December 10th, 2017. Mass of Christian burial was held in St. John the Baptist Church, Brook Village, on Monday, December 11th, 2017, with Father Bernie Mac Donald officiating.
