Born in Beaver Cove on September 29, 1924; the 10th of 12 children born to the late Joseph and the late Flora (MacNeil) MacMullin. In 1948 she married Martin W. MacKinnon of Beaver Cove and raised a family of six. Mom is survived by two sisters, Johanna MacKinnon, Iona and Josephine MacNeil, Halifax; sister-in-law, Betty MacMullin, and by children, Rod (Nancy), Mount Carmel, PE, Blaine (Anita), Beaver Cove, Adrian (Rose), Drayton Valley, AB, Martin (Eileen), Halifax, Fiona Grant (Sheldon), Beaver Cove and Ronnie (Celeste), New Waterford. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, Ryan (Melissa) DesRoches, Tyler (Christine) DesRoches, Darren (Bethany) DesRoches, Jesslyn MacKinnon, Erin MacKinnon (Glen Penney), Conor (Tyler Bruce) MacKinnon, Cathleen (Greg Ford), Shannon (Ken) Roberts, Jennifer MacKinnon, Kim (Chad) Oxelin, Jonathan (Natalie) Grant, David (Ashley Bonaparte) Grant, Jacqueline (Chris Hanlon) Grant, Eddie (Corrine) MacLean and Naomi (Joe) Murray. Mom and Dad also welcomed many into their home as part of their upbringing, including, James MacKinnon, Gerard MacKinnon, and John Thang Pham of Vietnam. A farm girl, Mom was brought up in Beaver Cove amidst plenty of friends and relations. She attended school in Beaver Cove and for a short time Iona. From her studies in Iona, Mom developed lifelong relationships with Lucille MacKenzie, Cecilia Bonaparte and Celina Fraser. Devotion and hard work was one of Mom's main assets: devotion to her family, to her grandchildren, to her community, and to her church. She was an avid volunteer, a visitor of the sick, and offering a welcoming hand when needed. She set up her home as a place of welcome; to visitors, for students and at 3 separate times of need as a boarding house for construction crews. She also assisted Dad's in his own volunteer endeavors with a welcome smile and a cup of tea. She had many long days but could drop everything for a frolic and fiddle music and skilled at using Gaelic cuss words very proficiently! A person's worth could be determined by whether they contributed more to society than they took away. We feel that Theresa Big Martin leaves us with an excellent balance of that measure. Jerry Alfred Rose Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 2nd, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the one and only, the great Jerry Rose. Born December 1, 1944. Jerry passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on January 2, 2018 in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer. To say Jerry was courageous is an understatement. He possessed this virtue to the very end and fought cancer with courage, grace and dignity. His strength and resolve were unmatched. He loved life and had the courage to live it to the fullest! Jerry’s zest for life was something to desire. No obstacle or problem was ever too big to solve and his ability to joke and laugh made the biggest obstacles, to the average person, seem minuscule. This trait is not easily learned but something Jerry always tried to teach by telling everyone to “just breathe”! Born in North Sydney, in his younger years, Jerry could be found hanging out with the all the rink rats at the former North Sydney Forum or racing around in his suped up Mustang. He began a career as a mechanic working in various locations and later retired from Bell Aliant after 26 years of service. He loved the outdoors and was the worlds’ greatest fisherman and hunter and always had the greatest tales about the big fish who got away or big buck that he missed. We often wondered if these ‘misses’ were bad luck or too many naps on the shoreline or in the blind. In later years, dad spent most of his days at his cabin in Estmere; life was always better at the cabin! Jerry will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 45 years, Donna; his pride and joy, son and daughter, Troy (Clarice) and Tammy (Mike Quinn “Fridge”) of Enfield; and his special granddaughters or as he referred to them ‘the toys’, Jenna and Rachel; brothers, Ronald (Shirley), James (Wilma), North Sydney, Jack, Sydney Mines, Lou (Paulette), Halifax; and sisters, Ada Haggerty and Bertha (Leonard) McCormick, Sydney Mines. Jerry is predeceased by his mother and father, Clara and Arthur; brothers, Wilfred, Andrew, David, Morris and Kenneth (in childhood) and sisters, Gertrude Dunphy, Ruby Harnish, Pamela Boyden, Zita Fowler, Ann Holland, Nellie Coulet and Edith Corkery. Jerry will not only be sadly missed by his immediate family but also by many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends near and far. We wish to express our thanks and deepest gratitude to many family members (Dougie), friends and health care professionals who assisted dad over the past two years while he battled cancer and especially the palliative care staff who provided comfort and support through his final days. We would also like to thank the volunteers who dedicate their time to make the family feel at home while in hospital. A Celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Chant’s Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Unit, Cancer Patient Care Fund and/or the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to a charity of one’s choice. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she leaves behind a few relatives, but a host of longtime friends and “adopted family” members. Born October 9, 1941, she grew up in Ashby, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Young) McPhee. Betty was educated at Constantine and Holy Angels High School. In her early years in Sydney, she worked at Abbass Studios, MacVicars Pharmacy, Alfred’s Grocery store and of course, McPhee’s Bakery. Her summers were spent in Mira with her parents until she made Mira her permanent home in the late sixties. Her love of Mira and the water was unending. She was the Grounds Supervisor at the Albert Bridge School; she worked at Mira Convenience, and the Provincial Park. Her love of children was obvious and her favourite question to them was “Did you have fun?” That was the most important thing for them, to have fun. Betty has the ability to hear a song and sit at the piano and play it flawlessly. She loved to sing and loved to dance until her knees no longer allowed her to do so. Her faith in Jesus got her thru the hard times in her life and she had a special devotion to Padre Pio, Saint Theresa and the Blessed Mother Mary. She prayed for everyone. William John "Jack" Head Born In: New Waterford Born: August 28th, 1931 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: January 4th, 2018 It is with broken hearts that we, the family of William John “Jack” Head age 86 of New Waterford, announce his peaceful passing on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital surrounded by his loving family. The baby of his family, Jack was born in New Waterford on August 28, 1931 to his devoted parents Louisa (Soper) and Bill Head. Jack met the love of his life, Catherine, at an early age. They wed on Catherine’s 24th birthday in 1956 and spent the next 60 years providing their four children and six grandchildren with love and cherished memories that will last a lifetime. They were each other's rock and when Catherine passed away in November of 2016 the biggest piece of Jack’s heart went with her. We find such peace in knowing that they are together again with their beloved son Kevin. Jack was the true epitome of a gentleman. He worked hard to provide for his family and to help those in need. He was affectionately known as Papa Jack to his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He was so proud to welcome his first great grandchildren, Ella and Arlo. Even though Jack was a man of few words, he always enjoyed telling stories of his childhood and his days spent fishing with his father and brothers. From a young age, Jack worked odd jobs to help out at home including King’s Garage and Albert LeDrew’s Contracting. He finished his working career as the Public Works Supervisor for the Town of New Waterford. Numerous snow storms were spent transporting nurses to and from work and making sure that the ambulance and fire service could get to their calls. His knowledge and advice of the town’s roadways and sewer systems was still sought well after his retirement. Jack always showed an interest in doing bodywork on vehicles. Many of his retired days were spent in his garage fixing and painting cars and trucks. It is one of the things that kept his Parkinson’s at bay for so long. A fourth generation, uniformed member of the Salvation Army New Waterford Citadel, Jack served many roles throughout his life including; Corps Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant-Major. He was a valued member of the Corps band both in New Waterford and most recently Glace Bay. Jack and Catherine enjoyed volunteering their time for the Red Kettle Campaign at the Mayflower Mall. Jack will be loving remembered by his three daughters and their husbands, Brenda (Hilary) Romard, New Waterford, Helen (Bernie) Corbett, Halifax, Bev (Leo) Gallant, New Waterford; his six grandchildren, Aimee Romard, Alyssa (Mark) MacDonald, Robyn Corbett (Murray Bain), Tyler Corbett (Louanne Comeau), Jonathan Gallant (Alyssa Aucoin) and Jennifer Gallant (Scott Pettigrew); and his two great-grandchildren, Ella MacDonald and Arlo Bain. Jack is also survived by sister, Maude Dodson, Sydney and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife, Catherine; his only son, Kevin “Koogie”; sisters, Blanche, Lillian and Edith; and brothers, Ralph, Dan, Henry and Art. Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 5-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service to celebrate Jack’s life will take place on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, New Waterford with Majors Rocky and Janet Bishop and Major Linda Watts officiating. A luncheon will be held in the Salvation Army Hall. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Donations in Jack’s memory may be made to Parkinson’s Canada or to the Salvation Army, New Waterford. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca <http://www.vjmcgillivray.ca/>. Special thanks to the amazing staff of Medical Floor and Dr.’s Ajuwon and Lange at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Jack over the last two months. Sincere thanks are also extended to the wonderful staff of New Waterford Homecare, especially Susie MacLean who Jack referred to as his girl, for their compassionate care of Jack over the last year. Your loss is immeasurable but so is the love you left behind.

(now Hinchey Avenue) when they married in 1947. The continuity is reflective of Annie’s essence. She valued strong family ties, and personal family stories. She brought that to her ties with and knowledge about what could seem like all of the families of early New Waterford. If you wanted to know something about your great-grandmother, you could ask Annie. She lived to swim and skate in her youth and served the effort of WW2 on the homefront working in an apple canning factory. Born in New Waterford, Annabelle was the oldest child of the late Neil A MacKinnon and Florence (MacIssac) MacKinnon. She was also predeceased by her husband, Joseph Irving MacKinnon; brothers, Hughie (Hilda), Donnie, and sister, Tina (Mickey) Boudreau. Annabelle is survived by son, Ron, of Guelph, Ontario as well as 20 nephews and nieces and their children. She loved them deeply. No one appreciated more the blessings of good relatives and friends, including especially in later years, her sisters-in-law, Reynelda (MacKinnon) Bruce and Hilda (MacVicar) MacKinnon. Very special in her life were her long-time cribbage partner Effie Nugent, and her great friends Dellie and Jean Young, who along with friendship, provided her with many years of maintaining her independence in her own family home. Special gratitude is due to Dr R. Azer for years of attentive care, and to the wonderful nurses at New Waterford Hospital who gave her last days which were miraculously pain free and peaceful. Following Annabelle’s wishes, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 11 a.m. in V.J. KENNEDY, Karen (Gilmet) Glace Bay It is with profound sadness that we the family announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, Karen Ann Kennedy, age 73 on Monday, January 1,2018 in Glace Bay. She was a most beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, partner and beautiful kind soul. Born in Glace Bay, Karen was the daughter of the late Samuel and Olga (Kelloway) Gilmet. Karen was known for being a gentle kind person; she raised many children in her life before and after having children of her own. She welcomed everyone into her home and was the matriarch to her siblings who loved her like a mother. Karen loved to dance and sing and had many adventures travelling to see her children all over the country. Her sense of humour was infectious and laughter was always ready to spill out of her at any time. She didn’t seek happiness; she lived happiness in the simple things of life. Karen is survived by her partner, Peter McNeil, and his loving family. She will be sadly missed by her son, Shannon (Lynn) Kennedy; granddaughter, Lyssa Bishop (Dewayne); two daughters, Kimberley Follette (David); grandchildren, Serina (Kelsey), Aaron, Isaiah and Zachary; great grandchildren, Sierra and Kai, her youngest daughter, Karen Beckingham (Chris), grandchildren, Emma and Noah. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 11 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford, with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. In lieu of flowers, donations in Annie’s memory may be made to the New Waterford Hospital or the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. KENNEDY, Karen (Gilmet) Glace Bay It is with profound sadness that we the family announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, Karen Ann Kennedy, age 73 on Monday, January 1,2018 in Glace Bay.
