Roxanne was the youngest child of Annie Mae and the late Bernard Leroy (Darkie) Tremblett, and was a gift to all who knew her. As a person living with cerebral palsy, she couldn’t have been born into a better family. Roxanne was blessed with an angel for a mother who ensured that she enjoyed every single moment and who devoted her life and every ounce of her love to Roxanne. They were inseparable. Annie Mae literally carried Roxanne through their journey together. She was her caregiver, her partner in crime and her very best friend. Because of Annie Mae’s tenacity and determination, Roxanne was locally one of the first people with a disability to enter the mainstream classroom and had the first computer at St. Joseph School. Her love for computers began then and never faded. She was very well known for her Facebook posts and had friends from all over the country. Throughout her life, Roxanne enjoyed an endless number of activities and, more importantly, the friends and relationships from each. She had a big heart for a good reason; she had so many special people to share it with. Roxy loved bingo and her bingo family, and her extra special friends Courtney, Lynda, Raylene, Marty and Florence, and played at every bingo hall from Sydney Mines to Membertou. She enjoyed chasing horses at the race track, specifically Pink and Blue, and was all smiles in the winner’s circle. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for our community, who campaigned to get a wheelchair accessible van through the Rolling for Roxie campaign. This allowed Roxanne and Annie Mae to enjoy the simple things in life that we often take for granted. To her cardiologist, Dr. Paul MacDonald and the hospital staff, including the nurses on 4 West, who gave Roxanne impeccable care over the years, we thank you. Roxanne’s condition caused her to have an enlarged heart, and thanks to the intelligence and skill of Dr. Catherine Kells and the cardiology team at the QEII Health Sciences Center, Rox had surgery at 19 years of age that added twenty years to her life. Roxanne is survived by her mother, Annie Mae; her brother, Ron (Tracey), and her sisters, Shryl Dodington (Matt) and Tanya (Frank). She is also survived by nieces and nephews, whom she was very proud of, Cole (Molly), Mathew, Michael, Lucas, Nicholas, Stevi Paige, Nate and Jared, and also special sister, Michelle Hatcher Marsh. She will be greatly missed by her aunts, uncles and cousins, who cherished her. Roxanne was predeceased by her father, Bernard Leroy; her brother, Bernard William; sister, Brenda Lee in infancy; maternal grandparents, William and Bertha (LeBlanc) Forrest, and paternal grandparents, Sidney and Ella Mae (LeBlanc) Tremblett. It’s no secret that the love of Roxanne’s life was Johnny Reid. He made her feel so special. On any given day, Roxanne had Johnny Reid blaring from the speakers. At a concert at C200, Johnny came off the stage and serenaded Roxanne. He also sent her an autographed picture letting her know that he was coming back to Cape Breton to perform again. Roxy had front row seats to Johnny Reid’s upcoming concert and we know that she’ll be there singing right along. Darlin’, I love you more than ever, I wish we were together, Darlin’ mine. There will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass to celebrate her life will be held Thursday, January 18, 2018, at 2 p.m. in Holy Family Church, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. The reception will take place in the parish hall, after the service. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Roxanne’s memory may be made to the IWK Children’s Hospital or Children’s Wish Foundation. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com <http://www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com/>.

John Ferguson Passed on: January 12th, 2018 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of John Robert Ferguson, devoted husband, beloved father, dear brother and kind friend, on January 12, 2018, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, NS, in the presence of his loving family. John was born March 11, 1924, in Homeville, NS, to William Allison Ferguson and Edith Hortense (Spencer) Ferguson. He is survived by his dear wife of nearly 71 years, Mary ‘Mae’ Archine (Campbell) Ferguson; children, Norma (Bob) Silverstein, Bob (Sheri) Ferguson, Margaret Ferguson and Glen (Beth) Ferguson; brothers, Donald (Effie) and Spencer (Carol) Ferguson; 70 plus grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, of whom he was tremendously proud, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by son, Al (Vicki) Ferguson; daughter, Mary-lu (Jack) Nelson; grandson, Aaron David Silverstein, and sister, Edie (Bill) Phillips. John began his working life as a farmer, but soon explored opportunities off the farm. These included a carpentry apprenticeship and learning foundry work, a trade which eventually took the family to Halifax. It was there that a friend became aware of John’s exceptional persuasive talents and encouraged him to go into sales. This is where he excelled and spent the rest of his professional life, initially selling management consultant surveys with the George S. May Company in Halifax, transferring to their Connecticut offices, and eventually moving on to selling insurance with Great West Life Assurance Company in Hartford. Management positions with Great West Life took the family to Saint John, NB and Wilmette, IL. Another career move to National Utility Service, took the family back to Connecticut, where John worked until retiring in the mid 1980s. Even in retirement, John continued to do what he loved best, interacting with people, by running the key cutting department at a local Home Depot. John was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon), which he joined in 1951. Always a leader, he was instrumental in the establishment and growth of LDS congregations all over the Maritimes and New England. He not only built up congregations, he also helped build their meetinghouses, putting to use the foundry and carpentry skills learned in his early years. In conjunction with his church work, John became very active in the Boy Scouts of America and revelled in organizing camping trips and pancake breakfasts for the scouts. John often referred to himself as a jack of all trades and master of none, but those who knew him marvelled at the extent of his expertise in so many areas. He was a chef, baker, carpenter, paper hanger, painter, plumber, mechanic, mason, roofer, gardener, arborist, butcher, weaver and so much more. He enjoyed a good pun, loved crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and cribbage, horseshoes, berry picking and clam digging. John had a thirst for knowledge and loved to travel, making trips to Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, South Africa, Madeira and Scotland. He was an avid outdoorsman, a great walker and could never resist petting any cat or dog that came his way. He will be dearly missed by his extended family, along with his frequent admonishment to “be good to yourself”. A special thanks to all the staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at CBRH for their tender and solicitous care of John and his family during his final days. There will be a viewing on Saturday, January 20 from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 230 Evergreen Dr., Sydney. Interment will be at a later date at Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at CBRH or Christ Church Memorial Fund c/o Gail Boutilier, 902-737-5483. She was an earth angel that fed her family and friends homemade cookies, pies and bread. No one left her home hungry. She loved to sing with her sisters and was always so happy to see the boys take out the guitars. She would cuddle you and give you Nannie MacIsaac kisses if you were upset. She never complained and always told us that God had a plan for us when things were rough. She reminded us that there were positives in everything and that we had to wait and be patient. She taught us how to love each other, not to judge and to forgive easily. She told us never lie down to sleep with anger in your heart. She would tell everyone, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” Her favorite pastime was going to bingo with her sister, Greta, at the Army Navy. She also enjoyed being with her bingo friends, Brenda and Evelyn. Her lifetime friend, Annette Campbell, was always there to play TV Bingo with her. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. ALMON - 86 YRS DERRICK FRANCIS DOVE - 36 YRS George Hamilton ‘Hammie’ MacNeil Passed on: January 14th, 2018 We regret to announce the peaceful passing of George Hamilton MacNeil, 85, at the Northside General Hospital on Sunday, January 14, 2018 after a brief illness. Born on July 10, 1932 to the late Joseph and Rita (King) MacNeil, he lived his entire very full life in and around Sydney Mines. He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 56 years with whom he had an incredibly close and loving relationship and life partnership. He had a very large and close family which was very important to him. He was an exceptional role model for his sons, Tim (Karen), grandchildren Kelley, Christina and Tony, great grandchild Sophie (Virginia), Blaise (Trish), grandchildren Liam and Erin, Oakville, Ontario and Darrell (Kim), grandchildren Kara, Kent and Colton. He is survived by his sisters, Isabel MacNeil, Agatha Cowie and Helen Hanratty, and in-laws, Ann Marie MacNeil, Shal Mei MacNeil, Bud and Joan McKinnon, Ralph and Helen McKinnon, Phyllis and Art Jackman and Jim Corbett, and a large number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, who died when he was very young, he was predeceased by his brothers, Frank and Connie; his sister, Ruth Burke; his step brothers and sisters, Joe, Tom, Cameron, Eddie, Ella and Mary; his in-laws, Bern MacNeil, Harry Cowie, Burt Hanratty, Dorothy and Gerald Jardine, Joan and Ernie Brown and Ann Corbett; his father and mother-in-law, James and Anita McKinnon, and by members of the Iannetti family from Atlantic Street who were very close to him and had a tremendous positive impact on his life when he was orphaned after the death of both of his parents. After a very challenging early start, like many people of his generation, Hammie, or Hambones as he was known to many of his friends, worked incredibly hard to build a life for himself. After many years of working with Iannetti’s and Martell’s construction (there was not a truck or piece of heavy construction equipment that he couldn’t operate), he struck out on his own and built his own very successful local businesses, North Metals & Hashems, of which he was very proud. He invested a tremendous amount of time and energy, working full time until his recent illness, to make these businesses a success, not just for his own reward but also for the people who worked with him – he was very proud of them and the work they all did together. In addition to his family and his business, he was also loved to travel. The boy from Atlantic Street found his way around the world, visiting China and Europe and many parts of Canada and the US with his friends and family. He particularly liked his trips to the beach in North Carolina with the extended family in the big beach house where everyone gathered around the table for dinner and laughs and his trips to Las Vegas with his “cronies” where he didn’t leave much money at the tables but rather spent his time looking at yet another excavator or bull dozer – nothing he liked more. He was also a very big believer in giving back, likely a reflection of the circumstances he himself faced when he was young. He was a very generous supporter of his church, his community, and those who needed a hand. Thank you to Dr. Bill MacDonald for many years of care and the Nursing staff on the 5th floor of the Northside General Hospital who provided him with such great care over the last couple of months. Visitation for Hammie MacNeil will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church with Fr. James Oliver officiating. With a reception to follow at the Parish Hall. Private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only please. If you wish to make a donation, he would appreciate your support of the Sydney Mines Food Bank. Born in Sydney in 1920, she was the daughter of the late John Ambrose and Agnes (Currie) MacKinnon. She grew up in Sydney's north end with her nine brothers and sisters. She went to Holy Angels High School where she played basketball and could throw a mean fastball if a baseball game came along. After marriage to Charlie Morley in 1953, she lived on Alexander St., Point Edward, Harrison Avenue in Sydney and Thompson Ave in Sydney River, before moving to Renous, New Brunswick and then Halifax. Despite all of the moves, she made sure her children were connected to home and to her big extended family. Cape Breton was always home to mom. She loved a day at the beach, usually Marble Mountain, Shenacadie or Big Pond. She enjoyed the occasional family ceilidh, always a time of step dancing, Gaelic singing, and storytelling. Mom would never lead off, but she would always quickly join in. Some of the tunes and some of the steps even made it to the next generation. Dad would always say, it was hard to get her to a party and even harder to get her to leave. Mom worked in a dental practice in Sydney and at Woolworths on Charlotte St. Once in Halifax, she was one of the first employees of Woolco's new store in Scotia Square where she worked for ten years. Mom purchased land in East Bay, Cape Breton with monthly payments from her Woolco pay. With this land they built their retirement home together, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Mom spent many happy years hosting family there particularly at Christmas and summer vacations. Mom loved to garden in East Bay, although some years it seemed more about feeding the rabbits and the deer. She lived in East Bay for ten years after Dad's passing, returning to live in Halifax when she was in her mid-seventies. In Halifax, she always felt fortunate to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She could always be relied on for caregiving or helping with homework. She particularly enjoyed the French homework, and after three children and seven grandchildren, she seemed to pick up the language, much to everyone's surprise. Mom was a smart woman. She was extremely well read and well-informed on medical issues, Canadian politics, and world events. Mom was one of those people who remembered everyone's name. In recent years, it was fun to watch her call a caregiver by her correct name, whom she only met once several weeks previously. She fondly remembered the "Newfoundland ladies" that stayed with her when she was in her early 90s with whom she shared many great laughs. Mom had a relentlessly optimistic view of the life. Despite health challenges in recent years, when asked how she was doing, she always replied… I'm getting there, better than yesterday". Mom was a woman of strong faith and met death with courage and grace. In her last moments on earth, she was still comforting and giving her strength to those she was leaving behind. God love her. She is survived by her son, Fred (Denise) Morley, Halifax; and daughters, Dr. Charlotte Morley (Baden Connolly), Halifax; Anne Louise Morley (Gerry Harte), Halifax and Brantford Ontario; and seven grandchildren, Claire (Tom Adams), Colleen, Margaret (Jamie Kinch), Alison, Jennifer, John and Julia. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles S. Morley in 1986, sisters, Jessie MacKinnon and Catherine (Fred) MacDonald, and seven brothers, Fr. John, Daniel, John A., Alex, Bernard, Sylvester and James in infancy. She is remembered by surviving brother in law, Fr. Fred Morley of Sydney. Visitation will take place at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, November 30th. Funeral service will be held at St. Agnes Church at 6903 Mumford Road on Friday, December 1st, at 10 am. A graveside service will be held at St. Mary's Church Cemetery, East Bay, at a later date.
