Mary passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 15, 2018 with family by her side. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Alexander “Alex” and Jennie (MacPhee) McSween. She grew up and lived her life in the Shipyard area of Sydney. EMERSON GUIHAN HENDERSON It is with sorrow that we announce the death of our patriarch, Emerson Henderson, on March 14, 2018, days shy of his 103rd birthday. Emerson had many loves, but none greater than his family. He was predeceased by his parents and his seven siblings, Kenneth, Lou, Pearl (Cole), George, Ruby (Stewart), Harry, Lettie (MacDougall); his wives, Charlotte MacIntyre and Eileen Kenney; his infant children, James Hugh and Paul Emerson, and his adult son, George. He began selling them first at MacPherson Motors in 1950, moving on to Island Motors before branching out on his own and opening Crown Motors, the very first Toyota dealership in Atlantic Canada. As a businessman, he believed in the value of service and was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 22 years. Emerson was also a lover of his pastimes. In his younger years, he enjoyed curling and sailing competitively. He belonged to the Sydney Curling Club and the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club, and was a founding member of the Dobson Yacht Club. He was also an avid golfer, first taking up the game in his beloved Ingonish in 1941 with the opening of the Cape Breton Highlands golf course and playing there until his last round in September 2017. He also enjoyed his time at Lingan Golf Club and his many trips to Myrtle Beach with his golfing buddies. In his later years, he never passed up a good game of tarabish. Lastly, as a proud Cape Bretoner and hockey fan, he loved cheering on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and was a season ticket holder from the beginning of the franchise here. He was most honoured and humbled to be recognized by them on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Our thanks to Dr. Bobby Cohen and Dr. Chris MacDonald, the staff at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, and the care team of An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home. FABIAN MCKINNON Born: March 07, 1933 Passed Away: March 14, 2018 It is with deep sadness and also with great faith, hope and love that we announce the passing of our father, brother and grandfather Fabian McKinnon, age 85 who passed away surrounded by his loving family into the divine embrace of Our Lord and His Church on March 14, 2018 at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born on March 7, 1933 he was the son of the late Lawrence and Muriel (Layes) McKinnon. He worked for 15 years as a coal miner as a young man in several collieries in Cape Breton. From there he worked at the Heavy Water Plant in Glace Bay and eventually became one of three founders of the Cape Breton Labourer’s Union in Sydney. He was known for his quick wit and like a true Cape Bretoner, Da felt the need to have a nickname on everyone from politicians to even his own grandchildren. A simple man of profound faith in Our Lord and His Church was his most memorable trait. The stamina and patient endurance in his faith was an inspiring characteristic that many people noticed. Service to Christ and His Church, whether it was serving at Mass, an active member of the KOC or simply being present in silence in front of the Blessed Sacrament were some of his greatest joys. Being awake at 5:30 a.m. sitting at the kitchen table reciting his prayers and the presence of the Rosary always in his hand even while he slept is a memory that he left to his children and grandchildren. His devotion and affection to the Blessed Virgin Mary was a source of constancy in his everyday life. If by some chance, a person was not aware of this, it would not be too long before Da would somehow bring her into the conversation and shower them with her praises. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Carmella & Donna; brothers, Joseph, Edmund and Murray and his precious daughter, Judith Ann. He is survived by his sisters, Theresa and Madeline; his beloved daughters, Michelle, Darlene, Karen, Candace, Deanna and Nadine; his sons, Nicholas, Anthony and Jordan. Most of all, he is survived by his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will always remember him as “Poppy”. Visitation will take place at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay on Saturday, March 17 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, March 18 at 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Holy Mass will take place at Immaculate Conception Parish on Monday at 11 a.m. with Fr Daniel Boudreau presiding. Reception to follow. Burial will be in St John’s Cemetery. A special thank you to the staff at New Waterford Hospital for the loving care and kindness you showed Da during the final weeks, days and hours of his life, especially keeping the “heat up” while you suffered in agony. In lieu of flowers, Da has asked that a prayer be said for those souls in this life and the next, especially those who are forgotten and have nobody to pray for them. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. On line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Requiescat in pace

Olive ‘Ollie’ was born in Sydney on January 23, 1939. She was one of 13 children born to the late Harry and Verlie (Inkpen) Pierre. In her younger years, Ollie was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Fighter Control Operator until her Honourable Discharge in 1959. She later spent many years working in Montreal at St. Patrick’s Orphanage. To this day, she continued to hold special bonds with many of the girls she cared for. Known as “Miss Ollie”, she would spend not only her working hours, but all her free time with the girls ensuring they were well cared for. She even introduced many of the girls to Cape Breton Island, where some would return regularly to visit and spend their adulthood exploring with “Miss” Ollie” She also worked as House Mother at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and for General Instruments in Sydney until it’s close. Upon her return to Cape Breton, she was a loving caregiver to her parents as they became ill and passed. Some people say that heaven does not exist on Earth, pieces of it may be found all around us. Ollie knew these pieces could be found above our heads and under our feet. Her nieces, nephews, siblings and friends knew her as an adventurer, sharing her love of nature, the ocean, rivers and outdoors through the many excursions along the trails, coastlines and back roads of Cape Breton beachcombing for treasures like sea glass and sand dollars. These adventures with Ollie would give those the same love for nature, that along with the memories would be cherished forever. She will be remembered for her quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor, her tickles and her many hours spent at the kitchen table playing cards and board games with her friends and family. She loved all animals, especially cats, which she had her share of over the years. We will all remember Sunday dinners out Mira, where the house would be full of love, laughs and hospitality shared with any and all who entered her home. She will be deeply missed by her lifelong friend and caregiver, Ann Young; as well as brothers, Willard, Sydney and Gordon (Maureen), North Sydney; sisters, Dorothy Burns, Sydney, Rose Marie (Frank) LeBlanc, Sydney Forks; as well as many nieces, nephews, and both grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Howard, Finlay and Donald; sisters, Bella, Verlie and Martha. Also, siblings, Judy and Norman in infancy. Cremation has taken place under the direction of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations in Ollie’s memory can be made to the C.B. Branch of the SPCA or the An Cala Unit at the C.B. Regional Hospital. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all those involved in keeping Ollie comfortable during her illness. A special thanks to Ann Young as well as all the doctors, nurses and care staff from homecare, VON, Palliative Care and the An Cala Unit.

Never one to be defined by convention, Alex’s indomitable spirit and love of life will be perpetuated in the lives of his caring wife of 36 years, Karen Elizabeth MacLellan, and inspirational loving sons, Ryan and Brooks. Alex was born to Angus Joseph MacDonald and Mary Elizabeth Campbell, in 1944, and lived in Sydney all his life. He is survived by siblings, John MacDonald, Ontario, Steve MacDonald (Shirley), Marie (Max) Weatherbee, Margie (Dave) Riley, all of Sydney, and several nieces and nephews who brought him ceaseless gratification and delight. Endlessly curious and self-motivated in the pursuit of knowledge, Alex began his working career as an electrician. Inclined to impart knowledge to any and all willing to learn, he became interested in and intrigued by teaching. This prompted a career change that cast him in the role of teacher, for several decades, within the public-school system. Alex was a voracious reader and veritable fountain of historical facts, milestone happenings and pivotal moments in the evolution of mankind. He was naturally social and enjoyed meeting new people. Gladly inclined to share the occasional story, he relished bringing smiles to faces with a joke or two and offered himself willingly to any and all in need of assistance, no matter the task. Alex’s love of the outdoors defined him in many ways. He was an avid and accomplished fly fisher who delighted in sharing his skillfully harvested bounty with family and friends. The importance of community and the need to give back was always top-of-mind with Alex. He proudly served with the Sydney Lions Club and was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ashby Branch. Summers were spent with family and friends along the shores of the Bras d’Or Lakes often enraptured by evening camp fires and a lively ballad or two. Close at hand one would find Shadow, his devoted cat. For the past decade or more, Alex was confronted by debilitating health issues. Taxed in ways that would have disheartened most, he endlessly found means to well up the resolve and courage to battle on. His spirit and determination were admired and a source of encouragement to many who knew him. To the dedicated, professional medical staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Coronary Care Unit, who compassionately and expertly cared for Alex, the family extends its deep-felt thanks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of choice. He started working at a young age in Florence Colliery and eventually retired from Prince Mine, Point Aconi in 1990. He was a competitive card player, who especially enjoyed his forty–five games; and would love to remind us how good he was…..lol. Through the years Dad has left us with some wonderful memories; he would often be found strolling around the block with the grandkids in tow and cherishing the time spent with each and every one of them. Dad will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Thelma (MacDougall); his three boys, James (Chi) Sydney Mines, Bernard (Suzanne), Leitches Creek, and Richard (Belinda), Sydney Mines; and his daughters, Brenda (Darrell Jessome), Sydney Mines, Flora (John Brennick), Bras d’Or, and Linda (Loddie Osmond), Florence. He is also survived by his eldest grandson, Daniel (Cathy) Sydney Mines, whom he referred to as his son and best coffee buddy; grandchildren, Brady, Nadia, Kayla, Krista, Tasha, Nathan, Michaela, Katelyn, Marissa, Juliana, Matthew, Lodrick, Kassandra, Brianna; also his great-grandchildren, Brandon, Logan, Lodrick, Isabella, Parker, Cole and one great-great-grandchild, Myla; many nieces, nephews and our close family friend, Christene, who was like a daughter to Da. Norman is also survived by sisters, Isabene (Vincent Legatto), Mary Gardiner, and Lesina Edwards, and brothers, Melvin (Laurena) and Ricky, all of Sydney Mines. Beside his parents, Norman was predeceased by a daughter, Bonnie in infancy; sisters, Margaret, Helena, Leona, Catherine (K), Naomi, Lillian, Geraldine and brothers Phillip, Danny and Ronald. We also take great comfort in knowing that Dad is reunited with his special granddaughter, Dana Jessome. The family extends a special thanks to the staff and administration of Dr. Doug Kohlsmith, Northside Homemakers, Palliative Care and VON for their outstanding care and kindness during our father’s final days. A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, March 9, 2018, at 2 p.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. CATHERINE MARIE “CATHY” (MACINTOSH) GILLIS Passed Away: March 07, 2018 It is with heavy hearts, yet beautiful memories, that the family announces the death of Catherine ‘Cathy’ Marie Gillis at home on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 with loving family at her side. Born in Sydney, Cathy was a daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Cameron) MacIntosh. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and gramma with family being the heart and soul of her life. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Port Hawkesbury. Cathy’s lifestyle was certainly passed on to her three sons who learned to appreciate the world around them as they grew up in Lexington with parents who provided the best possible opportunities for each to succeed in their chosen path as adults. Cathy is survived by her husband, Duncan ‘DA’; sons, Duncan B. (Susan) and their two daughters, Rhianna and Breagha, Colin (Allison) and their two sons, Reid and Ewan, and Archie (Maggy). Cathy is also survived by her sister, Margie, and brothers, Alan, Paul, Fulton and Tom. Cathy will be missed by her immediate family, and also by many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends near and far. Besides her parents, Cathy was predeceased by sisters, Martha Perez, Philippines, Mary ‘Dolly’, New York, Sylvia MacLean, Ottawa, Marion Ripley, Rowden, and brothers, Larry (Jeanette), Sydney, John, Ontario and Robert, Dartmouth. Cathy welcomed people into her home with genuine hospitality, and was quick to prepare a good cup of tea, and perhaps a game of Tarbish. Her love of nature was always evident in her enjoyment of watching the ocean and listening to the sounds of the waves as they rolled in to the shores of the many Cape Breton beaches which as a family they enjoyed. Scenic drives, trees with their fall foliage especially the vibrant reds, and simply sitting with family on their lawn swings overlooking their spectacular garden while watching the birds at their feeders with an eye out for the finches were times well spent. On many an evening their family log home on the hill would come alive with the sound of a guitar as Cathy enjoyed listening to DA as he practised their country music favourites prior to kitchen parties held across the area. Unforgettable memories! The family wish to express special thanks to the Palliative Care, Home Support and Continuing Care Teams for their compassionate care which made Cathy’s passing at home with family possible. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 9 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 10 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Cathy to Strait Area Palliative Care Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family: www.haverstocks.com. Weldon Bona Passed on: January 19th, 2018 IN THE END: Weldon Bona ended his life on Friday, January 19, 2018 with help from Medical Assistance In Dying and Dying with Dignity Canada. Peaceful, pain-free, and with a smile on his face, Weldon chose to die as he lived–fully and on his terms. IN THE BEGINNING: Weldon was born in Baddeck on Cape Breton Island to parents Maisie and Wilfred. He was big brother to Michael and spent his early years in North River Bridge until the tragic loss of his father in a devastating fire after which Maisie and the boys moved to South Bar and then Whitney Pier. Weldon was keenly curious, observant, and imaginative, exploring and learning everything he could about the things he was interested in. After graduating from Sydney Academy, Weldon worked until he earned enough to set off for Toronto where a job at a print company “got the ink in my blood”. He returned to the east coast and attended College of Cape Breton and Dalhousie University. He moved back and forth between Halifax and Toronto and hitched around North America a few times. He worked with punk rock bands designing logos and posters. These years would establish Weldon’s love of and dedication to art, culture, and design. When, in 1981, he returned to Cape Breton to live and work, Weldon opened a graphic design business bringing an avant-garde approach and artistic sensibility that would eventually make him one of the top designers in Nova Scotia. From the early days when he was the first in Cape Breton to acquire a Mac, Weldon was always on the cutting edge of technology. IN RECENT YEARS: Weldon has been the Director of Communications for over a decade at Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources, a Mi’kmaw environmental and natural resource management organization. He once wrote, “My work at UINR brings together everything I am interested in—the natural world and our responsibility to it, something that my Mi’kmaw friends and co-workers understand so well.” IN HEART AND IN MIND and throughout Weldon’s time, he taught himself and learned from others. He grew gardens and food. He made friends, and lovers, and art. He worked with many artists and was instrumental in local art and cultural organizations. He played an important role, not only because he was an artist himself and immersed in the arts, but he had a talent for seeing the bigger picture and speaking his mind unabashedly. “For argument’s sake” was a principle Weldon lived by, but it was important to him to get people to see things in a new way. This made Weldon a sincere advocate for artists of all disciplines and a worthy mentor. To paraphrase a friend, “Those fortunate to be his friend will carry with them the simple lessons learned—to laugh often, to question everything, and to see beauty everywhere.” And Weldon did—authentically and always. Weldon lived his truth and stuck to it. That thread of truth would run through everything he did and created. ALWAYS REMEMBERED by beloved brother, Michael (Marilee); nephew, Eric (Kathleen); many loved and loving family and friends, and Spice (aka Space), his dog.
