At a very young age Leo went to Ontario where he worked in the sheet-metal industry until he retired. In 2001 he and Gene moved back to East Margaree. They both loved the square dances and often spent the evening on the dance floor. Leo often commented on the beautiful mountains which he could see from his home in Margaree. He enjoyed walking on the beach and in the woods. On a nice sunny day you would often find Leo and Gene in their lawn chairs at the boardwalk in Baddeck where he would be reading his newspaper. Another place he liked spending a bit of leisure time was in his “cottage” at the back of their house. Leo was very dedicated to his church, St. Michael’s, East Margaree, and was a founding member of Sunset Funeral Co-operative, Margaree Valley, to which he gave generously his time, energy, help, and encouragement. MacDONELL We regret to announce the passing of our brother Archie Duncan (AD) MacDonell. Archie passed away on Monday, April 16th, 2018, in Coleman Health Centre ,Barrie, Ontario. He entered this world a child of God and left as an angel to the open arms of the Lord and our family above. Our prayers and Mom’s unending love, granted our wishes of a peaceful passing. His home was Coleman, and his life was blessed with care and love from the support staff, doctors and all those that played a special part in Archie’s life. Anytime you would call Coleman and ask, “How’s Archie doing?”, they would reply, “he’s the same old Archie. He’s easy going, happy, and he brightens our day.” Archie had Wayne’s love for music, Mom’s warmth and love of holding hands, Dad’s hands and nose, and like all of his siblings, he was a touch stubborn and mischievousness which was reflected in his common response, “stop that.” He’s a weaver. We’re comforted in knowing that he’ll rest with Mom and Dad now forever, which is where they always wanted him; home by their side. Archie is predeceased by his parents, Angus and Margie; brother, Wayne; sister, Marcey; and sister-in-law Anne. He is survived by his sister, Diane Beaton (Charlie), brothers, Gary (Valerie), David (Sheila), Glen (Annette), Ronnie (Lori); brother-in law, Scott Cameron; and all his loving nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. Archie was rested in Port Hood and Area Resting Place for a family viewing on Sunday. Funeral Mass was held in Saint Joseph’s Church, Glencoe Mills, on Monday April 23rd. Close family friend, Father Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place in Port Hood Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to the Port Hood Cemetery Fund. Online condolences may be made to: www.invernessfuneralhome.com.

    3. Ellie, I may have something about your Howies. My father's mother, Ruth MacLean Maney, lived for a time in Sydney before 1900. That is also where her mother was born. In 1972 my father and another MacLean cousin jotted down some info about these MacLeods and the families they married into. That is the only info I have to share w you. Will also say that most of the info from those notes about the MacLeans did turn out to be verifiable. I am assuming that this generation of Howies included people who were roughly of the same age as my Hector and his wife. The notes say that my grandmother's uncle, Hector George MacLean, was born about 1833. He married a Mary MacLeod from Glace Bay or Mira. Mary's siblings were Kate, Isabella, and Dunc Jr. According to these notes, a John George Howie married Mary MacLeod's sister, Kate, and their children were Arthur, David, and Robt. Isabella (Bella) married John George Howie's brother, Peter Howie,  and their children included a John, Issac, and James. Finally, a sister, Mary Howie, married a Gus Murrant. At one time they lived in Glace Bay and she may have died in Pt. Caledonia. Hope this info is helpful. And although not a musician herself, she expressly appreciated and encouraged the music-makers around her, enjoying decades of her husband’s daily piano and serenades. Charitable in every respect, all who knew this remarkable woman will remember her for her boundless kindness toward others, her limitless sacrifice for her children, her nourishing and heartening guidance that sustained us, and her undying love for her husband Gerard. She modeled compassion, tolerance, understanding and forgiveness. But her greatest gift to all who knew her was ensuring we understood our unique importance to her, celebrating and believing in the individual greatness in us all, helping us to see ourselves through her optimistic and loving eyes. Ellen is survived by her husband, Gerard Thomas Dunn; her children, Morrissey (Cheryl Chafe), Camilla Dunn, Stellamarie (Larry) Wile, Timothy (Gail), Miriam MacDonald, Damien (Millie Pettigrew) and Gerard. She leaves behind two beloved sisters, Ada Keating and Stella Ferns; her many grandchildren, and 13 greatgrandchildren who will grow up knowing and loving her through our stories. She is also survived by her extended McGee and Dunn in-laws, and her many nieces and nephews who cherish her. She was a good neighbour, dear friend, remarkable teacher, loving sister, devoted wife and the most supportive and wonderful mother any person could wish for. The Persian Poet Rumi wrote “Set your life on fire; seek those who fan the flames.” This incredible person fanned our flames, making us all, and the world, much brighter. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her three brothers, Anthony, Stephen and Gerald McGee, and son-in-law, David MacDonald. Visitation for Ellen will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass to be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to your local Food Bank. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com. ANNIE LAURA (MCINNIS) MURPHY Born: November 09, 1914 Passed Away: March 20, 2018 The family of Annie Laura (McInnis) Murphy of Sydney Road, Reserve Mines, is deeply saddened to announce her passing on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at the age of 103, in Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney River, where she has resided since April of 2014. Born on November 9, 1914, in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Elsie (Flynn) McInnis of McKay's Corner. After graduation from Glace Bay High School in1932, Laura attended the Nova Scotia Normal College where she obtained her teaching licence. Her first two years as a teacher began in 1933 in a one-room school in Frenchvale where some of her oldest students were responsible for keeping a fire going in the stove. She then taught for one year at Tower Road. In 1936, she married Thomas Murphy of Reserve Mines and her career was interrupted as married women were not permitted to teach at that time. She returned to the classroom in 1954 in Reserve at St. Joseph's School and then at Reserve District High. During those years, she upgraded her licence by taking courses at Xavier College. She retired in 1979, having spent twenty-eight years in the classroom at what she considered to be a very rewarding and fulfilling career. Laura was very well-respected by both her peers and her students. Throughout her life, she was a champion of the less fortunate and she had respect for everyone. Laura was a woman of deep faith. In earlier years, she attended Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in McKay's Corner and she was a member of the congregation of Saint Joseph's Church in Reserve Mines for many years. Laura was a person of very strong character that was fashioned, to some extent, by the experience of growing up during the 20s and 30s without the father of her family, who died at thirty-six years of age, when she was eleven. Laura and her mother and six siblings faced many challenges and she and her sisters and brothers learned early the value of hard work and perseverance while making the most of what they had and not wasting anything. These were characteristics that Laura maintained throughout her life. She often spoke highly of her mother, Madge, who, after the passing of her husband, raised seven children with unwavering strength and guidance. Laura's family meant everything to her and their happiness and well-being were a primary concern for her and Tom. Their home was a place where many gatherings were held and Laura's fine cooking and baking skills produced delicious meals that were thoroughly enjoyed. Her grandchildren fondly remember their visits when they would be treated lovingly to their favourite meals. Both Laura and Tom had green thumbs and they spent many summers cultivating very productive vegetable gardens. They nurtured an abundance of beautiful flowers and plants that adorned both the interior and exterior of their home. Laura's husband, Tom, was well-known as a character who loved a funny story and who might play a practical joke on the unsuspecting. Laura also possessed a fine sense of humour and laughter was an important part of her being right up to the end of her days. Besides her parents, Laura was predeceased by her husband, Thomas, in 1988; sisters, Elsie and her husband, Hal Chenell, Thelma and her husband, Pat McCormack; brothers, Thomas “Son” and his wife, Dorothy, Gussie, Donnie and his wife, Anna; brother-in-law, Aubrey McNeil; and son-in-law, Gord Byrnes. She is survived by her daughter, Norma Byrnes; sons, Arnold (Nan), Thomas (Minette), Stuart (Marie), and Jerry (Mora); 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; sister, Monica McNeil; sister-in-law, Rita McInnis; and many cherished nieces and nephews. Heartfelt thanks are extended to the wonderful staff of Irish Cove at Harbourstone for their loving care of Laura during her last four years. Thanks, are extended also to Dr. Jamie MacLean of Glace Bay and Dr. Steven Hall of Sydney for their excellent care. There will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass celebrating Laura's life will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Reserve Mines on Friday, March 23, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Norman MacPhee as celebrant. Interment in the parish cemetery followed by a reception in the church hall. Memorial donations can be made to the Cemetery Fund of Saint Joseph's Church in Reserve Mines or to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Online condolences can be forwarded to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Loving and kind in all her ways Upright and just to the end of her days Sincere and true in her heart and mind Beautiful memories she has left behind.
