Born on November 27th, 1955, in Little Judique, NS, to the late Robert and Mary Ann (MacInnis) MacDonald, Josie was raised in Glencoe with her five siblings. She attended Mabou Consolidated School where she met her future husband, Finley Roddie Beaton. She caught his eye with her step dancing skills and they began dating in August 1978, marrying the following year on July 28th. They took up residence in Pictou County where they raised their children and showed them over the years what true love really is. Josie held various jobs but her main job was caring for her family, always keeping them well fed with her home baked treats, and having the patience to endure many hours of piping and drumming practices during their teenage years. Known as “Nannie” to her grandchildren, they will have fond memories of time spent with her, especially Christmas Eve traditions at Nannie and Grampie’s house, and their summer trips to Antigonish. Josie had a love for crossword puzzles and reading, often finishing a book a day. She enjoyed visiting and long phone calls with friends and was happy to take the trip of a lifetime last fall with Finley, Michael, and friends Phil, Harry, Debbie, and Harold when they travelled to the Dominican Republic. Josie is survived by her husband and best friend Finley, daughter Jennifer (Steve) Hansford, son Michael (Kelly); grandchildren Keaton, Kelsey, and Duncan; brother Charlie (Claire) MacDonald, sister-in-law Mary MacDonald; godson Robert; niece Jana, nephews Brian and Donnie; special friends, Florence and Hughie MacIsaac and Albert and Betty Warner, and many other cousins, nieces, and nephews. MacISAAC On Saturday, May 26th, 2018, God called upon Joan (MacLean) MacIsaac to join him in Heaven. Born in Montreal, Joan grew up and attended school graduating from The Mother House and later becoming a secretary at McGill University. Joan loved to dance and play tennis. It was likely those tennis and dance moves that brought her late husband Joe ‘Speed' MacIsaac to fall in love and marry her, bringing her back home to Port Hood, on beautiful Cape Breton Island. Joan was a member of the CWL, of St. Peter's Parish, and was very close with her friends, in and around Port Hood. She loved it when people would drop by to share some tea and cookies, have a glass of wine with cheese and crackers, or just chat and get caught up on what she would call “all the news”. She also loved the outdoors and enjoyed bringing family and friends to the beaches and boardwalk of Port Hood. Joan is survived by her daughter Joanie McIlhone and her son Donnie and daughter-in-law Sue McIlhone. She has five grandchildren: Jeffrey, Jennifer, Melissa, Candice, and Elias and seven great-grandchildren: Ella, Luke, Brooke, Ethan, J.J., Zoe, and Nate. Greetings to the list, Looks like Rootsweb/Ancestry is catching up with their archives. The bunch that were sent out today, are from March 2018 & very early April. I still don’t trust them to get them all out daily. So just delete the group that came today dated March 2018 & April unless you want to look them over first, and any others that come in that are not current. I will continue to send to those on that are on my BCC list. So you may get them twice. Carol out here in Vancouver

There are two places named in Cape Breton, and this may be a sub-division of either or an older area of such, known by locals. Both of these areas have mountains and/or hills. You have Middle River along the Cabot Trail, in Victoria County. You also have Middle Cape, along Route 4, just south of Big Pond, in Cape Breton County. > On May 24, 2018, at 5:56 AM, Mimsi MacK via NS-CAPE-BRETON <ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Hi all,Does anyone know where Middle Heights, in CB, is? > Thanks for any help. MacDONELL Colin Andrew (Collie) MacDonell passed away peacefully in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital with his family by his side on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018. Collie was born on May 1, 1928. He was the son of the late Colin and Annie Mae (Gillis) MacDonell. “Little” Collie was known for his extensive knowledge and love of genealogy and for being generous and selfless with his time. Over the years, he has been called upon by people from all corners of the globe to help track down information about their ancestral homes, family burial plots and long-lost relatives. As a result, there were many road trips and back road tours, often to remote areas, which led to long days and discussions about family trees, all of which he enjoyed and thrived upon. The staff at the Chestico Museum in Port Hood often called upon Collie to lend a hand when they needed assistance in tracing generations of family history. Needless to say, there were many letters, dinners, and tokens of appreciation from the countless people he met and helped over the years. Never at a loss for words, Collie always had a reputation and talent for the long lost art of storytelling. A dedicated employee of the Port Hood Co-op for 44 years, Collie always had time to chat with customers and his colleagues, usually providing them with a laugh from one of his many stories, usually many times over! His favourite opening line was, “Did I ever tell you the one about when…” After retiring from the Co-op, Collie had more time to do the things he loved most: spend time with his wife Cassie, his daughters, and his beloved grandchildren. Collie could often been found sitting on a bench at a mall while Cassie shopped or at the Co-op, chatting and telling stories, or engaging strangers in conversation, many of whom probably found out they were related to someone from Inverness County. Retirement also allowed him to devote more time to his love of horticulture. Annual trips were made to greenhouses around Cape Breton Island and his famous flower beds caused many to slow down along the High Road in Port Hood for a closer look. There is certainly no shortage of photographs from over the years that showcase his proverbial green thumb. Collie and Cassie’s love of the game of Auction often found them playing at someone’s house until the wee hours of the morning, but rarely ever as Auction partners! The many friends and relatives he played with over the years will miss his sharp wit and excitement, especially when banging the five on the table. A dedicated community member, Collie served on many committees and organizations over the years, such as the Knights of Columbus St. Peters Council 8275, the St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery Committee, the St. Peter’s Parish Council, and the Chestico Museum and Historical Society in Port Hood who honoured him for his dedication in 2016. Collie’s family also want to acknowledge his appreciation for the visits and phone calls from his nieces and nephews, extended family members and his many friends who visited regularly, especially since he has been confined to his home. Although his health was failing, Collie was excited to celebrate Mass at home with Fr. van Zutphen and welcome the many family and friends who recently attended the open house to celebrate his 90th birthday. The last of his “Weaver Clan,” Collie will be remembered for many things, particularly his kindness and generosity to children, his unwavering faith in God, and his love for his dedicated wife Cassie. She was the reason he was able to remain at home until the day before he passed into God’s arms where we know he is now surely sharing plenty of stories with his parents and beloved brothers and sisters. Collie is survived by his wife Cassie (MacDonald) MacDonell, daughters Colleen (Glen) O’Connor of Port Hood, Lisa (Shawn) Taylor of Lower Sackville; grandchildren Christina, Andrew, Mitchell, and Donell, Jacob and Lily; sister-in-law, Annie Mae Mac Donald (Donnie) of Port Hood; Jessie Beaton of Mabou; Annie Mae MacDonell of Port Hood, as well as many nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Archie, A.J., Alex, Angus, and Donald Francis, and sisters, Mary (Morse) and Catherine Annie MacDonell. Visitation was held on Sunday, May 6th, and Monday, May 7th, in Port Hood and Area Resting Place. The funeral was held on Tuesday, May 8th, in St. Peter’s Parish Church in Port Hood with Father Vincent van Zutphen officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of the late Collie MacDonell can be made to one of the following charities: Central Inverness Palliative Care Society; St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery Fund or the Port Hood and Area Resting Place. He is survived by his sister Lois (Stephen) Trapp as well as his nieces and nephews: Cuyler, Bryden, Jake, Joey, and Rebecca. He was predeceased by father Joseph, mother Margaret, brothers Donnie and Bernie, uncle Willie Kennedy, and sisters-in-law Maureen and Lorna. Above all, he was a man of integrity, greatly admired and respected by his colleagues in the nuclear industry. He was the laboratory supervisor at the Canadian General Electric heavy water plant in Point Tupper, NS, from 1970 until 1977. Cyril joined New Brunswick Power as the station chemist for the commissioning, start-up, and operation of Atlantic Canada's nuclear power station at Point Lepreau. He was responsible for all aspects of chemical control including station materials and the environment. He recruited and mentored staff to carry out this chemical control. He was a member of the NB Power 25 year club. Cyril was devoted to his Christian faith and lived his faith in all aspects of his life. He was always engaged in many facets within the Catholic Church community. Cyril’s parish communities included St. Marks in Quispamsis, NB, and St. Peters in Port Hood, NS. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus FM Lockary Assembly 0616 in Saint John, NB, and the past Grand Knight of St. Peter’s Council 8275 in Port Hood, NS. Regardless which community Cyril resided, he was always actively involved. He was a past president of both the Port Hawkesbury Lions Club and the Gondola Point NB Lions Club. Cyril also enjoyed Corvette sports cars. With other Corvette lovers in Saint John, he worked to form the Corvettes of Southern New Brunswick in 2000 and was a past president of the club. Cyril’s personal interests never hindered his involvement and took pride in his children activities and accomplishments. In 2004, Cyril retired from NB Power. Contract work within the nuclear industry took Cyril and Jeanette to countries such as Argentina, Romania, South Korea, China, and United States. With Jeanette, he built a home in Port Hood along the waters of St. George's Bay on Cape Breton Island where they enjoyed their retirement and their involvement in the community of Port Hood. Hello all.this is my first message for the "newer" version of Rootsweb. I am hoping to find details regarding my GrUncle, Lawrence FITZGERALD (b. abt. 1905) and his wife, Elsie (BAILEY, b. abt. 1913). I have their marriage record details - married in Cape Breton in 1931. From a death record I found, they had at least one child, a son - Ivan (b. 1938/d. 1939) while residing in Cape Breton. I do not have any other specific details regarding them. However, from contact with other cousins, they have shared memories & stories that he was in Massachusetts during the time period of 1955 - 1960 as he is a Godfather to a cousin and then he visited..she has vague memories of him as she was a child when her Godfather visited. We don't know if the woman with was Elsie or another woman/wife?..and, if the two children with them were his or, perhaps hers from another relationship? I have not found any other children born to my GrUncle and Elsie from their time in Cape Breton...so, typical of family research, more questions! Any help is welcome, thank you..Nora.
